B - Browser

When I began to think about the Wii browser and how it may be used… I couldn’t help but think that it was a bit frivolous. I mean, after all… who the hell wants to browse the web on their television? Especially on a console with only 480p output. And ESPECIALLY with that strip at the bottom of the interface taking up the bottom of the screen. I’d rather not be zooming into websites and clicking with the Wiimote to browse the web. Thanks, but I have a computer for that. But then I began to think a little harder.

Let’s see what our good friend Wikipedia has to say about the Wii browser.

The Opera based Wii Browser will allow users full access to the Web and will support all the same web standards that are included in Opera 9 web browser for PC, Mac OS X and Linux, including JavaScript. It is also possible for the browser to use technologies such as Ajax and Adobe Flash. Opera Software has indicated that the functionality will allow for third parties to create web applications specifically designed for the use on the Wii Browser, and it will support Widgets, standalone web-based applications using Opera as an application platform. The company has also stated that some Wii video games may implement the use of the browser.

The Wii uses WiFi… so if Mom is using the computer and little Billy wants to get on the internet… the Wii is there for him to use in a pinch. Still not great, but at least its a use for the thing. I’m sure that for most households, the Wii Browser will be relegated to the backup browser.

Surely us “technically-inclined” won’t have any serious use for something like the Wii browser… right? Not so fast there hot shot. Just yesterday night, I was able to catch up on some Family Guy through a website that a fellow rebellionaire introduced me to. This website collects television shows and posts them on their site in the flash format. BAM. Here comes the Wii browser’s usage for me. It blows watching any sort of long, flash-based stuff (YouTube, Google Video, etc.) on a computer screen… and the Wii can be used to view that content. Flash episodes of Family Guy on my TV? Sounds good to me.

What about gaming? If we assume that flash is supported, why wouldn’t flash games be supported as well? Clearly without a keyboard there may be control issues for some games, but with games that only need a mouse click… the Wii would do just fine I suppose. But, I’ll admit, this usage is stretching a little bit.

Where it gets really interesting is the “specifically designed for Wii” part. I’m sure someone, somewhere will launch a Wii specific page out on the interweb. I remember when Sega released its web browser for the Dreamcast, there were some enterprising people who did some interesting things specifically for the Dreamcast. And, as far as I know, Sega really didn’t make an effort to make it easy to make a “Dreamcast compatible” website. Opera is here putting in functionality that will make Wii-specific browser applications possible.

Clearly, the Wii Browser is a really small portion of Nintendo’s plan. In fact, for most Wii owners out there… the browser is probably not going to get used at all. But the fact that it’s so fully-featured and that Opera seems to be throwing its weight behind making it as good as possible can only mean good things.

How will you guys be using the browser? Will you use it at all? Just click the box below you and comment away, rebels.
