B - Browser
When I began to think about the Wii browser and how it may be used… I couldn’t help but think that it was a bit frivolous. I mean, after all… who the hell wants to browse the web on their television? Especially on a console with only 480p output. And ESPECIALLY with that strip at the bottom of the interface taking up the bottom of the screen. I’d rather not be zooming into websites and clicking with the Wiimote to browse the web. Thanks, but I have a computer for that. But then I began to think a little harder.

Let’s see what our good friend Wikipedia has to say about the Wii browser.
The Opera based Wii Browser will allow users full access to the Web and will support all the same web standards that are included in Opera 9 web browser for PC, Mac OS X and Linux, including JavaScript. It is also possible for the browser to use technologies such as Ajax and Adobe Flash. Opera Software has indicated that the functionality will allow for third parties to create web applications specifically designed for the use on the Wii Browser, and it will support Widgets, standalone web-based applications using Opera as an application platform. The company has also stated that some Wii video games may implement the use of the browser.
The Wii uses WiFi… so if Mom is using the computer and little Billy wants to get on the internet… the Wii is there for him to use in a pinch. Still not great, but at least its a use for the thing. I’m sure that for most households, the Wii Browser will be relegated to the backup browser.
Surely us “technically-inclined” won’t have any serious use for something like the Wii browser… right? Not so fast there hot shot. Just yesterday night, I was able to catch up on some Family Guy through a website that a fellow rebellionaire introduced me to. This website collects television shows and posts them on their site in the flash format. BAM. Here comes the Wii browser’s usage for me. It blows watching any sort of long, flash-based stuff (YouTube, Google Video, etc.) on a computer screen… and the Wii can be used to view that content. Flash episodes of Family Guy on my TV? Sounds good to me.

What about gaming? If we assume that flash is supported, why wouldn’t flash games be supported as well? Clearly without a keyboard there may be control issues for some games, but with games that only need a mouse click… the Wii would do just fine I suppose. But, I’ll admit, this usage is stretching a little bit.
Where it gets really interesting is the “specifically designed for Wii” part. I’m sure someone, somewhere will launch a Wii specific page out on the interweb. I remember when Sega released its web browser for the Dreamcast, there were some enterprising people who did some interesting things specifically for the Dreamcast. And, as far as I know, Sega really didn’t make an effort to make it easy to make a “Dreamcast compatible” website. Opera is here putting in functionality that will make Wii-specific browser applications possible.
Clearly, the Wii Browser is a really small portion of Nintendo’s plan. In fact, for most Wii owners out there… the browser is probably not going to get used at all. But the fact that it’s so fully-featured and that Opera seems to be throwing its weight behind making it as good as possible can only mean good things.
How will you guys be using the browser? Will you use it at all? Just click the box below you and comment away, rebels.

I highly doubt that I will be using the browser at all while I am defeating Bowser, especially since the Wii is a home console and my MacBook is sitting there on the sofa…
Sideath - 10.25.06 2:26 pm
Well for starters your MacBook shouldn’t be sitting on the sofa, it disperses massive amounts of heat through the bottom of the case so putting that against fabric is just asking for trouble. It specifically tells you not to in the manual….
I’ve been in many situations where the wii browser would be good, when your in the lounge with your friends and just quickly want to show them something on the internet, normally we’d all go and crowd round one of the computers in someones room.
Its not a massive feature its just a nice convenience.
dogparty - 10.25.06 2:35 pm
I almost never use my Macbook, lol.
What was that Family Guy flash site btw?

I think having a web-browser and one that is clearly one of the better browsers is a positive thing. In my house the TV 40 inches so it would look nice to browse pages when other members of the family are using the main PC.
And you wouldnt have to get up off the sofa to reach for your PC. lazy but a good idea.

I can’t count the number of times I’ve had friends over and had to find my laptop to check what movies were playing at a local theatre.
I’m sure my wife would watch Desperate Housewives from ABC’s website on it.
Jim - 10.25.06 3:05 pm
I have a computer hooked up to my television - it’s awesome for watching downloaded episodes of TV shows that I bought on DVD. Also, youtube is great. I also enjoy playing HOMEBREW emulated games on my TV.

Checking movie times is a great idea. In fact, It would be great if that became a channel itself. As far as watching Flash-based videos and other things, I’d have to wait to see how it looks first. However, if it looks good, then by all means, yes, I’d use it. Also, it would be nice to watch stuff like “On the Spot”, “IGN Weekly”, and “The 1up Show”.
Idea: I saw a trailer of “The Darkness” for Xbox360 and was amused by the fact that they actually have TV stations in that game. So you can actually flip on a TV and just watch what’s on it if you want to take a break from the game. It would be awesome if there was a game for Wii where, at certain points you could access the browser from inside the game. This doesn’t have to only be limited to a “break”, but there could be real websites that one would need to get information from for the game, through the game.
supadude5000 - 10.25.06 3:18 pm
ill be browsing alright, cuz my bro hogs the comp like a mad monkey to play maplestory (lvl 101 crusader[he hacks]).
Brandon Nintendofreak - 10.25.06 3:20 pm
I’m very much looking foward to having the Wii browser on my tv for one major reason…
Gamefaqs!
No more trudging into the other room when I need to look something up. I can keep the Wii browser on gamefaqs on one TV input and play another console on the other. Then switch inputs when I want to read the FAQ.
I suppose it is a bit blasphemous using the Wii to enhance my gaming experience with another console, but it’ll sure be handy!
Shame I can’t switch to it quickly while playing Wii or Virtual Console games… Unless I get two of them that is…
alpha jammer - 10.25.06 3:24 pm
I can’t see myself using the browser at all.
amanaplan - 10.25.06 3:38 pm
Not only I’ll be using it, I’ll be designing for it.
I’ll also be a nice way to access my local network’s Apache and therefore computer files
Arty2 - 10.25.06 3:47 pm
The Colbert Report on Comedycentral.com! If i miss an episode, I can catch up! Same goes for the Daily Show! And I can look up walkthroughs and cheatcodes while playing, that’s handy. I’m certainly excited about this feature, as well as the MANY other features this little white box has.
…I sure hope there’s not too many ‘cool features’ like the browser and the Mii; it might confuse the non-gamer. Prove me wrong, Nintendo.
Next up, C for……controler, no doubt.
D~N - 10.25.06 3:59 pm
You think that’s bad? Remember the time I won a date to Mexico with Gary Coleman?
I will mostly use it to check things on the net when I couldn’t be bothered going upstairs to my PC.
Fox Montage - 10.25.06 4:04 pm

I bet you all will use the browse much more than you anticipate. I have wireless throughout my house, and I have a desktop and a laptop computer. But it’s still a hassle to have to boot either of these machines up just to do some frivolous internet task. Sometimes you just want to do quick searches and you don’t want to bother with those beefy machines. Since it’s been announced, I’ve lost track of the number of times when I’ve said to myself, “man, if I had a Wii, I could just switch over to the a/v input and find out X.”
There are several moments in my time at home when I want to quickly look something up on the internet, but don’t want to bother booting up my computer/laptop. We’re talking 30 second tasks here… what’s the weather like? what time does the movie start? where else have I seen this actor? what does ESPN have to say about the game I’m about to watch? what are the latest headlines? what is the next step in this recipe?
The thing is, when the average Joe sees someone using the Wii for this type of activity, they will want to use it. As soon as they pick up that remote for something like this, they have overcome the biggest hurdle in playing a new console - becoming comfortable with the controller. Pretty soon they try out Wii Sports… next thing you know, like a crack junkie, they need their next fix and they’re off playing Mario Galaxy. It’s pure genius on Nintendo’s part.
CDubb - 10.25.06 4:58 pm
I have a computer on and connected at all times I’m awake, some 20 feet (as the human walks) from where I plan to have my Wii. This computer is used almost exclusively by myself. I will download the browser ASAP (ok, after trying out Wii Sports), but I don’t plan on using it on a regular basis.
Jordan - 10.25.06 5:02 pm
Actually I’ll go a step further and make a prediction.
By the end of 2008, ISPs will be offering Wii with a broadband subscription, where the person will buy the set at a retail outlet, with a modem/wireless router and Wii that have the same security settings,
If the Wii browser can do the Pogo/Flash games thing and allow people to check their e-mail, and have some sort of keyboard to use, (and quite frankly, I’d be surprised if there’s not a keyboard addon for the Wiimote soon.), people might want an easy to use, virus free internet appliance solution.
Currently, all these solutions are expensive, lacking in features, hard to use, and don’t have ISP support.
If Nintendo is aggressive, they can change that.
Karmakin - 10.25.06 5:11 pm
Could be a personal Mii page. Ranks pages and other personal sort of myspace stuff.
djchoi - 10.25.06 5:44 pm
I plan on developing for it. I’m starting work on a browser-based MMORPG right now that uses AJAX and other technologies that Wii’s Opera will support. Hopefully by the launch of the Wii, I will have something to report here about it as I am adding Wii-specific elements to it if possible.
geekRECON - 10.25.06 5:51 pm
I will be using the Wii browser quite regularly, I think! Anytime I’m stuck in a game (sadly, quite often) I can just click the home button to go to the channels menu and use the browser to find some online help with the game, whether it be on IGN, GameFAQ’s or somewhere else!
No more keeping my ibook on the sofa (by the way, it doesn’t disperse much heat at all when it’s idle, no spinning hdd or optical drive), because my browser is right where I need it!
Batmyke - 10.25.06 6:00 pm
My questions to the board is:
With the Wii and other consoles become web browsing tools, what’s the potential for someone to write a virus for them?
Regardin usage: It’ll be nice to have, but I cna’t foresee myself ever using it unless it’s connected to the games somehow. Of course, a lot of times these sort of things have to evolve. So who knows how the market and technology wil change over the next few years. I may use it more than I realize now.
gravitymachine - 10.25.06 6:25 pm
VIruses…good question.
N Rumas - 10.25.06 7:07 pm
I hope they’ll let us map buttons on the remote to various keyboard keys. Then you could play online Flash games with your Wii remote easily. Just map “space” to A, “ctrl” to B, etc. etc. Whatever you want. That plus mouse emulation = play tons of great Flash games on your TV.
Grant - 10.25.06 7:28 pm
Actually, this way I could go through my daily game news sites (Joystiq, 4 Color Rebellion, and Kotaku, viewed in that order.) without leaving my console! Then I can just pop in a game and play!
Never thought of that. I am now 2.5% more excited about Wii!
yanipheonu - 10.25.06 7:31 pm
A lot of great ideas here.
For a long time, I have been thinking it would be interesting if there were discussion boards relating to television shows with which you could interact after the show ends. A link could pop up to take you there after an episode to discuss, laugh about it, etc. with your friends or other fans of the show around the world. Though I am sure nothing like this will ever happen on the Wii, it would be possible if they make a wireless keyboard.
xx/eyes - 10.25.06 7:49 pm
Pandora ( http://www.pandora.com/ ) would be fantastic on the Wii.
“With the Wii and other consoles become web browsing tools, what’s the potential for someone to write a virus for them?”
None. Even malware would depend on some sort of buffer overflow error which is extraordinarily unlikely (Opera has a superb security record — easily the best amongst modern browsers and then some).
eM - 10.25.06 7:54 pm
If Flash is enabled, then it’d DEFINITELY be awesome to show those low-res video clips blown up on the TV (as it has an equally low resolution) to show to friends and family. Browsing youtube or other pages to view quick clips, trailers, etc… That’d definitely give it some use.
Liraco - 10.25.06 7:55 pm
an SD browser… Count me out.
David James - 10.25.06 7:59 pm
Hmm, well, my laptop and Wiimote will share a place on my coffee table, so, for real hardcore internet browsing (aka. 4cr) I’d expect to only use the laptop, but I can see it as having loads of potential for videos, especially if I can find an online streaming service to stream all the videos off my PC onto the TV.
Now that would be nice.
Myles - 10.25.06 8:17 pm
I’m sitting in my living room with the laptop now, so the browser will be a little extraneous but still nice to have. What I want is a US release of Opera DS for those moments watching TV and want to look up something on IMDB when the laptop’s not here. Pausing the TV and switching to the Wii would be too intrusive.
Well, that and I want to try to write an IRC or Yahoo client that works on the DS’ lousy Javascript implentation (no XMLHttpRequest so you have to use iframes to do Ajax-like stuff.)
raindog - 10.26.06 1:34 am
Having the DS Opera Browser (Japan version, my last order from poor poor lik-sang) I know Ill be using the Wii Browser a lot. Hell, Im using the DS right now
My PC is in pieces, and I really dont care to put it back together again. Im trying to find and use different cheap alternatives to the Windows/PC/iexplorer thing; Apple is expensive, so Im thinkin Wii can fill the void, maybe, probably not… but itll be fun to try.
Regardless, Id rather be on my sofa than at a desk. Laptops are too fragile for me.
mizzle - 10.26.06 6:27 am
I’m probably going to watch cartoons (Homestar Runner/Strong Bad and Newgrounds-esque ones, like Salad Fingers, come to mind) and YouTube clips on the big screen, especially when having friends over.
Spug - 10.26.06 9:38 am
So…will the browser allow downloads to your SD card?
DCSimian - 10.26.06 10:15 am
I have to agree with what several others have said. I won’t use it for my hardcore browsing, but if I’m watching TV and want to look up something, I can just power on the Wii and get online in seconds, without having to get up off the couch. Sometimes I’ll have my PowerBook on my lap while watching TV, but that’s a rare occurance, so for the odd times I want some quick info, the Wii browser will be perfect!
What I can’t wait for even MORE is the DS browser. I have a 12″ PowerBook but the only time I take it out in public is when I plan on doing some work at a coffee shop/book store. If i’m waiting in line at some place, or shopping with the old ball and chain, it would be awesome to pull out my little DS and find a hot spot to get online and browse for a bit!

I actually see the Wii Browser as being the biggest thing to hit the home in 2007. People that couldn’t understand how to use a PC and its wealth of options now only have to switch on, point and click. It’s that easy. “Hardcore gamers”? They will be right at home on a PC. “The Others”? Are perfectly suited to the Wii interface, and it is this area Nintendo are aiming for.
Of course this all counts on Nintendo’s masterplan of tempting non-gamers to play the Wii. If they can’t get them playing the thing, the non-gamers won’t go near the Interwiib.

The Wii will be a replacement for WebTV.
It will reinvent the set-top box, and so called NET PC, remember the NET PC back in the late 90s, never caught on.
The Wii will make Net PC possible without a hard drive.

Yes, the porn issue. children could easily access adult material.
adam - 11.11.06 12:59 pm
This is awesome if only because it opens the door for lightweight homebrew. Look at what happened on the PSP — before 2.XX firmwares were back-flashable, people had Flash games to keep themselves busy, and a bunch of coders made PSP-specific games. I bet the Wii’s innovative control scheme will be a magnet for imaginative games.
