Derek Yu is kinda my man crush around here, the Tim Schafer to my Mitch if you will, so you’ll understand if I’m quite excited by his recent announcement that he’s making a brand new game called Aquaria. His new gaming company, Bit Blot, is developing it and they currently consist of Mr. Yu himself and Alec Holowka (funnest name to say, ever), a fellow member from his other gaming company.
Now I know that any game that has the hand of Yu in it is likely going to be a great looking and fun indie classic, but after reading a description of his vision for the game over at his personal blog, I really believe that this may turn out to be his best game yet. Check it out:
imagine this possible scenario: you’re swimming around fluidly (using the mouse to control), and bouncing off of rocks, just having fun moving around. Maybe you encounter a school of fish that you swim alongside for awhile. Eventually you come across a small cave sticking off the side of the map that you hadn’t noticed before and you head in (out of curiousity’s sake). A crablike monster scuttles idly by as you do so, and you can ignore him or kill him. If you’re feeling murderous, you can sing a magic song to change to a form that let’s you blast him away. Or maybe you want to sing a song that let’s you pick up a rock and then crush him with it. Or maybe you wait until he gets on the rock and then pick up the rock with him still clinging to it! And then when you go inside the cave, it’s just a cave. Not necessarily a dungeon or level or a “key to the next area” or what have you. It’s just a damn cave! And your experience tells you that there could really be anything inside, from ancient ruins to treasure to mythic angry killer unique monsters…
Oooh, can’t wait until the spring release of this one. Head on over to the game’s homepage for some screenshots and a teaser trailer.

Oh. god.
This game will either really rock, or be unplayable due to the abstractness of it. I’m totally hoping for the former.
I LOVE underwater life. This game is on my “must buy” list, along with Spore.

Reminds me of StarScape (http://www.moonpod.com/) in the artstyle, and in the gameplay sort of. Except the controls in StarScape were more Asteroids-esque.
I liked StarScape, and i’ll probably play this.
Looks like fun :3

Anyone else get some Ecco vibes off of it?
That could be the beer though.

Nice art style.

I’ll definately get this, if Derek is nice enough to make an Linux x86 port, or if it works great in Wine, but I doubt the latter will be true. Or, you know, he does a Wii VC version in the future, because that Wiimote can imitate the abilities of a mouse really well…

KAT: I hope you’re a “Forever Blue” fan!
The movement does seem to be a bit like Ecco, but also reminds me a bit of the underwater portions of Donkey Kong: Jungle Beat. Seems like it should be a pretty interesting game (hopefully better than that flying around with clouds one…)

let me make this sound better-
imagine this possible scenario: you’re swimming around fluidly and also your name is ecco and also you are a dolphin
The premise sounds interesting, looks pretty from what i can see.Might have to give this one a look, I have SUCH a thing for ecco and the video here reminds me of it.

i was thinking Nights more than Ecco…but damn this game is looking great.

I really can’t stand games that have such a serious lack of direction in what to do. They’re fun…for fifteen minutes, but when I am being entertained, there needs to be a story at the root of the game, which is something that Ecco did perfectly. The DC game was nothing short of brilliant! (although really friggin hard) RIP Ecco!

its like oblivion meets aquaman

That logotype is so totally Roger Dean.

I’m unsure about this game… I’ll have to try it out perhaps using a demo before I go out and actually buy it.

WOW gorgeous 2D!! This looks amazing! Think it’s too much to ask to get this on Wii VC? Who do we have to persuade to make that happen? It worked for Sam & Max, right?

Is it just me that thinks that this game would be awesome on the DS? That would be really cool!
