Gametrailers is not a place I usually go to find anything other than trailers for games but I was tipped off that they are currently working on a Legend of Zelda video retrospective. Part one is up now and covers the NES days. There isn’t a lot of information that Zelda fans don’t already know, but it is presented in a nice nostalgic way. I was convinced to start re-playing The Adventure of Link after watching it. Who knows, maybe I can even beat it this time. So how many of you were playing video games when these NES Zeldas first came out? Share a story.
Here is mine: I remember that I had just gotten a NES for Christmas and only had Mario and Duck Hunt. My babysitter brought over the first Zelda game so that she wouldn’t have to do any actual work. I loved that game so much that I convinced my parents to go out the next weekend and have that babysitter come back (with Zelda). To this day I can’t remember the name of the babysitter but that is how I became a fan of the Zelda series.

Thank god the babysitter wasn’t a hot girl to distract you from gaming…

I was stuck playing Pong, the sky is falling, burgertime, and somthing to do with elevators when the NES was out, and when I did finally get one I was stuck playing some cruddy Bill Elliot racing game (This is what you get for having a gamer for a father); I was behind the new system adoption curve until around the N64 era, at which point I made up for lost time by having nearly every stsyem under the sun with games to match.
My NES Zelda story: Ordered The Ledgend Of Zelda, and Zelda II: The Adventures of Link off of ebay (or was it a pawn shop?) around 2002. Anyway, I played them briefly but I think it was a little too late to enjoy them properly; I don’t enjoy them very much.

I didnt get a chance to play the nes versions. Instead the first zelda game i played was Link’s Awakening (which was in fact the very first game i ever finished!). Now that i look back, that game was hella fun and i sorta wish that i didnt sell my gbc so at least i can play it again. I know Nintendo would do it, but i can imagine how popular the sequel wouldve been if nintendo were to make it. I know id buy it.

I had gotten a Nintendo for my Birthday, and it was just as popular with my Parents and their friends as with me and my buddies. When Zelda came out I saw an article in the Nintendo Fun Club Magazine about it and had to get it. Somehow my Mother got ahead of me at one time, and was at the final dungeon before me. However, I managed to win out and beat Ganon first, and sadly, she never finished the game. However, that’s always been a fond memory between us, and since then, playing Zelda always reminds me of those carefree days of my childhood.

The NES had been out for some time but I didn’t have one. I spent many hours playing my friend’s wishing I had my own. Well, Christmas comes and I get a NES Action set with SMB/DH, Centipede(I don’t know why), and the original Zelda. You wouldn’t believe how happy I was. I practically played Zelda non-stop. I finally beat it sometime in late January. I never played it again until I picked up the GC Zelda Compilation and I realized that it’s a hard game.

I can understand the hate/dislike of Zelda II change from over-head to side-scroller (as I have yet to play the game) but Zelda 1 is still really enjoyable to this day (especially Zelda III on SNES).

i had zelda 2 before i had zelda 1. my friend from school swapped me zelda 1 for zelda 2, theyre both awesome forever. i cant imagine anyone not loving zelda 2 if they had played it back in the day, when they were a kid.

I remember first playing the original Legend of Zelda…especially for a kid it was like jumping into a whole new world contained in the cartridge with all the little hidden secrets and all the fun dugeons to play through. Heck, I used to go outside, find a short stick, then go on my way to fight Gannon and save the Princess. I used pinecones as bombs, if I remember right. lol

Oh yes, and Zelda 2…it may be different than Zelda 1, but I still think it’s a great addition to the series. Personally I like the fact that they weren’t scared to try something different (and if you think about it, it plays better than a lot of side-scrolling games that were coming out at the time).

My first encounter with Zelda 1 was at some store like K-mart or Ames. I was an Amiga snob by then (the NES was my little brother’s) and I totally hated Zelda. I felt I had already played better dungeon crawls on the C64, and by then I had access to Nethack on the Sun workstations at school. (Yeah, I know, nethack has no story and is totally turn-based, but wow, it was like a new world to me.)
My second encounter with Zelda 1 was in an emulator about 7 or 8 years ago. Still hated it.
My third encounter with Zelda 1 was on the Zelda Collection bonus disc on the Gamecube. STILL hated it. To this day I can’t figure out why they decided you could only throw knives unless you had full health. “Ow, that octorok kneecapped me, I’m too feeble to throw anything!” But on that same disc, I found Ocarina of Time, which while I still haven’t finished it is one of my favorite games. Even though the graphics aren’t quite up to par with most Gamecube games, what with it being an emulated N64 game, the music direction and story and cinematics are like nothing I’ve ever seen, before or since. The nostalgia I feel is only 3 or 4 years old, with me sitting on this very couch in the middle of winter with Saria’s Song (possibly my favorite videogame song ever) playing endlessly. Oh, to have that kind of free time again without having to go on welfare.
Never played Zelda 2 or any other Zelda game except 4 Swords, which I also played in-store (Best Buy) and couldn’t get into it. I think I was too distracted by the “SNES crossed with Wind Waker” graphics, which I thought worked very well. But someday I’ll at least give Zelda 2 and Link to the Past another try, Zelda 2 because the side-scroller is way more familiar to me and LTTP because everyone creams over it.

I didn’t get an NES until I was 6. My friend had an NES but he didn’t have Zelda. That was in ‘92. I had an Atari 7800 until I got an NES at a garage sale and it came with a copy of Zelda 2. I didn’t get Zelda 1 until years later. I loved Zelda 2. I still do. It’s my fav of the NES Zelda’s. Ever since beating horsehead for the first time I’ve been hooked.

lol, Link got hot coffee in zelda 2

You’re not throwing the sword. It’s an energy beam of sorts. I think that ties it more into the full life thing. In the context of the game, I think it makes sense. It rewards you with a useful weapon ability by being good at the game.

I wasn’t even born when the original Zelda came out, but I remember my babysitter would bring over Zelda II, (wich she eventually left over and I had two copies of, one of wich is missing now) I eventually beat the original game when it was released on gamecube with a walkthrough from Zelda.com (Hey, that game is tough)
