Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Caliber was one of my favorite SRPGs (Strategy RPG) on the N64. With a deep compelling story and clocking over 60 hours of gameplay, this game was a must buy back in the day, especially since there wasn’t much in the RPG genre on the N64. Ogre Battle was the first RPG that I played where you didn’t have direct control over the battles.

You choose the formation of your little platoon, decide which units are in your platoon, and unleash them on the map. What bothered me about the map movement is, that they were slow. When you select a unit and place a flag where you want the unit to go, he will attack every enemy on his path to the destination. Wandering around the map, you could find treasures, and when you entered towns you could talk to the people there or shop. It is similar to the gameplay you have in Fire-Emblem. This is a game I’d like to see come over to the Virtual Console since I never finished the game, and my N64 is so far away now. I was almost at the end, but never had the time to finish it, though I can’t remember why.

The graphics were pretty good at the time, using pre-rendered backgrounds in battle and cutscenes, with sprites used for characters. Even today they still look great. The overworld map is another story though.

Then - 4.5/5
Great story, lots of character development, everything you could wish for in an RPG.

Now - 4/5
Overworld Map isn’t up to today’s standard, but the rest of the game is still awesome.
