One of the biggest surprises for me at the Tokyo Games Show was found in SNK’s booth. No I am not talking about the huge number of booth babes SNK employed but rather 3 posters that were hanging in the booth. They were advertising 3 new DS games. 2 RPGs and one “Simulation”(I know from previous experience that “Simulation” games are usually dating simulations). I was determined to find out more about the titles. Once I got home I fired up the press kit CD that SNK had given me and found a lot of nice high-resolution screen shots and character artwork. But still no description of what the games might be.
Than while reading Kotaku this morning I found out about one of the RPG titles called “Doki Doki Majo Saiban”. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised about the game’s objective, but.. well.. Decide for yourselves.

Brian Ashcraft of Kotaku writes:
Called Doki Doki Majo Saiban, this adventure title has players search for witches hiding on earth. They may look human, but these sorceresses ain’t. How do you find out if they are? You touch them. Duh.
Makes perfect sense to me. But here’s the question. Is such a family friendly game system like the Nintendo DS really ready for games like this?
True, there was a sexy DS game in the past called “Touch de Rakushou! Pachislo Sengen: Rio de Carnival”. It was made by Tecmo and contained a bunch of gambling mini-games with bikini girls. This 15+ rated game failed to generate any real sales and was mostly ignored.
Japan is no stranger to provocative video games. The Sega Saturn, PC-Engine and 3DO all had their share of smut. And SNK had already released a naughty portable game for the failed Neo-Geo Pocket Color (it was a strip Mahjong game in case you were curious). But Nintendo, even Nintendo of Japan, has historically always shyed away from this type of game. Are they really trying to enter the “mature” market?

I would be lying if I said I was shocked that someone would consider making an adult game on a system that has a slogan of “Touch!” but I am surprised that Nintendo would license it. Perhaps it is much less explicit than the description makes it out to be but in any case if this game does well it could set a precedent for more of this type of software.

So what do you think of all this? Is this just Nintendo expanding its market share to a new demographic? Is this a savvy business move or a PR mistake? And would Salem, Massachusetts be remembered differently if they had known about this new “witch test”?

And you’ll be first in line to buy this game.

I’m into it. I’ll buy this the day it comes out!

Will it actually have adult material in game though?
Well, either way, I don’t think it’s a “We could make so much on the H market”, but more of a “Hey, this type of title might turn out fun on the DS” (well, but in a creepy old man voice). I might end up buying it just to experience it, and I’m not even straight.

I think it’s a great idea! There are thousands of perverts in Japan that would just love this kind of stuff. DS is not limited to kids games after all. Even one of the best-selling titles for the DS wasn’t made for kids.
If you ask me, the games market needs a few more AO games…
Please don’t quote me on that.

I laughed so hard after reading “Judge for yourself” and then seeing a screenshot of this.
Good times.

I’m not sure what you are talking about as handhelds, and every system as a matter of fact, have had 15 + age games selling in Japan for a long time.
It’s a soft-core porn, not a perver/hentai game.
It’s the diffrence between Sports Illustrated Swimsuit edition (or whatever the hell they call it) and porn.
Sure it’s stupid as hell, but there is a market and there are quite a few games for it on DS already, even SEGA has gotten into the act for the past few years.
If you ever visit Super Potato or Haki Love Game in Japan, you will see quite a few.
Oh and the DS is selling to everyone, it’s not for kids alone.
Remember that “Everyone” includes those who enjoy these types of games, no matter how stupid they may look to us.
It’s no diffrent then Dead or Alive Volleyball, a game you can’t honestly say most people bought for the volleyball aspect.

I am not talking about “mature” tiles being anything with a high rating but specifically for games that get that rating purely for sexual themes.
If you read my post you will find that I am well aware of the abundance of games such as this. I am pointing out that this is only the second time such a game has appeared on a Nintendo Platform. One specifically targeting that (erotic game) market. And most signs show that this one will be rated 17+, though it has not been rated yet.
And not every system has had them. Famicon didn’t, Super Famicon didn’t (they had Super Real Mahjong, but is was heavily censored), Gameboy didn’t, N64 didn’t, gamecube didn’t.
Saturn, Neo-Geo CD, Dreamcast, PC-FX, PC-Engine, Laseractive, Neo-Geo Pocket Color, Playstation 2, Xbox, 3DO had them. Nintendo did not license those titles at least as far as my knowledge. If you can find me examples of erotic games on a nintendo system prior to the DS, I will be glad to stand corrected.

Ok, I think I understand most of the icons in the screenshot… but is that a rubber duck there on the end? I can’t imagine what that’d be for! (Or maybe I just don’t want to imagine!)
angryemu - 09.29.06 1:44 pm
Sweet. I’m importing this the day it comes out =)

It looks cute. Not like porn, more like flirting with girls to find out whether or not their witches. I don’t see the big contraversy. Maybe it’s odd Nintendo has such a game but everyone has to branch out eventually. Anyone that has a problem with this obivously has not played VTM blood lines or GTA san andreas. I don’t even consider this close to erotic content, more like a creative dating sim. Not my thing (I’m a violence, sex, and blood junky) but I can see how the more eccentric gamers can dig it.

This game is stupid…….. what kind of preverted fun is this? If you people get your kicks out of “playing” with a anime girls on a video game, step out into the real world, stop living with your mother, and GET A LIFE! Okay?
Lexi - 10.11.06 8:51 pm
yeah, and people who stab dragons or grand theiving autos for fun on a stupid videogame? what the hell? fencing classes aren’t expensive, and i’m sure there are dragons somewhere. or shoot a bunch of thugs in dc and jack a ride.
now, i’m not going near this game with a 10 foot pole(nobody look for a joke in there), it’s fantasy play. you want to fantasize about the fun stuff you’ll never get to do in your life, because you aren’t good enough or because the circumstances won’t ever come up. somebody wants to do naughty stuff for the same reason.
