Nintendo of Europe recently conducted an interview with Stephanie Langlois, the Senior Project Coordinator for Ubisoft, about their plans for Red Steel. Although most of the information has already been revealed in previous previews, a few interesting pieces of news came out.
First of all, it looks like there won’t be online play.
NoE: What can you tell us about Red Steel’s multiplayer mode?
SL: “It’s tough to discuss multiplayer in detail as it’s still a secret but there will be four-player split screen, but no LAN. Online will maybe one day be announced by Nintendo but it won’t be for the launch [of Red Steel]. In terms of gameplay I can’t reveal anything really but what I can say is that internally we are making tons of tests.”
This confirms the rumors that we’ve been hearing about Nintendo not sharing their WFC libraries with 3rd party developers. Another rumor that has been floating around has been squashed, Red Steel will make use of the controller’s speaker.
NoE: Are you using the Wii Remote’s built-in speaker for gun and sword sounds?
SL: “Yes it will be used in single player and multiplayer. When you hit with your sword the sound will come from you, as in reality, instead of the screen. So there is simple use like that or more complex use, as you will discover later.”
In an interview with Nintendo-Lan.de, a couple of other interesting tidbits popped up.
The sword fighting has been completely reworked. Instead of the odd series of button presses shown in the E3 demo, the sword actually corresponds to controller movements.
That’s the case indeed. A developer has confirmed that the control scheme will be completely redesigned so that the controller moves are converted into the game precisely. Besides the controller sensitivity will be completely adjustable in the final version. And the graphics were improved very well since E3, now the atmosphere is much more darker and thrilling. But that’s not all, there will be even more improvements on the graphics side.
Also, Red Steel will not have load times. In fact, Wii will have the shortest load times of any of the new consoles.
In Red Steel there will be no loading times at all because of smart streaming techniques. How it’s handled in other Wii games we can’t say at the moment. But it’s a fact that Mario Strikers Charged will have loading times similar to the Gamecube version of the game. We were not told if that will be changed in the future. But we’re sure that it will work like on the Gamecube. And as you know the loading times on Gamecube - if they have existed at all - actually were not a big deal.

Nintendo-Lan.de talks to Ubisoft

This IS the title I’ll be picking up on launch day.

I find it curious that they point out that “…the graphics were improved very well since E3, now the atmosphere is much more darker and thrilling. But that’s not all, there will be even more improvements on the graphics side.” They seem oddly restrained. Perhaps Nintendo does still have some sort of graphical ace up their sleeve, so to speak.
enigma7 - 08.29.06 12:28 pm
It’s cool that the sword movements are realistic. That’s an awesome development.
The conceptual are from this game is so awesome, I sure hope the gameplay pulls through.

I had the same thought as Enigma, only less optimistic. My exact thought was “way to throw gasoline on an already-burning rumor mill, Ubisoft”.
In case anyone missed it: http://www.joystiq.com/2006/08/27/rumor-will-nintendo-punk-u s-with-the-wii/
“Nintendo has been playing us the fool all along. They have been showing us trailers for games that have deliberately downgraded graphics compared to what the Wii can actually do. This is to create an element of surprise for the press during Nintendo’s next media event.”

I just do not understand how Nintendo can be so bone-headed about the online system for 3rd parties even early on. I mean, we’ll find out soon enough, but it gives the impression it’s not as far along as every one hoped. Who knows if even any of their launch day games will support it. Hopefully they get it out of the gates FAST because if it’s not there early on we’re talking a good amount of games that would be in development that might not wind up using it for quite some time.
I suppose the plus side is that, if companies wanted, they might be able to allow people to download new additions to the titles that do enable some sort of online play through WiiConnect24. Who knows, though… it seems like a lot of work.

You know, I’m very happy there’s a video game company like Nintendo who insist on making load times an area of concern. Honestly, it’s very hard for me to play certain games on ANY console outside of Nintendo’s due to horrible load times. I don’t mind waiting a small piece of time…but to have to sit through them when you enter a door or to get back to a main menu just pi**es me off.
Load times ruin a lot of potentially good games. My latest pgripe is with Dead RIsing. Awesomely wicked game…would be MUCH better without the load times.

Graphics?!

The other thing that caught my eye was this: “Online will maybe one day be announced by Nintendo but it won’t be for the launch [of Red Steel].”
Can Nintendo retroactively make a game playable online? Never saw it in action, but I believe hackers did this with the Gamecube (http://cubeonline.warppipe.com/), and those same hackers were supposedly hired(?) by Nintendo to do something big with the DS that never materialized (Do a search on 4cr for Demasked if you don’t know what I’m talking about). Maybe the technology found its way into the Wii.
Schtum - 08.29.06 1:04 pm
It does kinda hint at adding online later. I’m cool with that. I won’t have time for online with 27 launch titles.
Fammy - 08.29.06 1:05 pm
too good. no load times.
EOM - 08.29.06 1:47 pm
What a bummer. I was looking forward to kicking someone’s ass in a swordfight online. I really, REALLY hope that they’re able to add it in (if that’s what they meant). It was one of my main concerns (along with the sword controls, which have been fixed, thankfully), and it’s a big purchasing decision. But, what really makes me hit the roof is that there isn’t any LAN. I mean, seriously, it doesn’t take much to add in a LAN feature.
I thought the Wii was about people coming together to play games. What an upsetting decision they’ve made…

SCHTUM’s link has a post that makes a good point… ”
Nintendo’s graphical goal with the Wii is no secret. Push an standard definition TV (480p) to it’s absolute limit. any more horsepower than that is a waste because the Wii doesn’t support HD.”
While I completely agree– The graphics aren’t quite Cable-TV-show quality
but maybe they can be if it were a realistic game playing at that resolution?
Namssorg - 08.29.06 2:04 pm
On launch day, I am handing Ubisoft my wallet.
geekRECON - 08.29.06 3:00 pm
The point of the Wii pushing ANY TV to its absolute limit is basically just a bunch of nonsense, though. I mean, really, the 360 and PS3 can display stuff in 480/480p well beyond what the Wii can ever possibly do. Do they look better on HDTV’s? Definitely. But the Wii isn’t pushing anything anywhere in terms in graphics.
I don’t think it’s really a bad thing as it’s obviously not the focus, but it’s definitely not stretching the limit there.
Tony - 08.29.06 3:54 pm
Wiii!
This game is going to own the other systems pants off.
Crimson Warrior - 08.29.06 4:07 pm
i am just happy the wii can output 480p widescreen
nicholas - 08.29.06 6:18 pm
did anyone watch the latest videos of red steel on IGN?
notice where the sword fight is, when he starts turning around the enemy, that only the background turns? and the enemy just stand still?
Edgar - 08.29.06 6:49 pm
WiiConnect24 supports live updating of games so the online could be downloaded later on.
Jonz0r - 08.29.06 6:55 pm
You guys do know that Red Steel is a franchise, right? This won’t be the only game
Jay - 08.29.06 7:00 pm
The latest build of Red Steel looked like nothing more than the E3 version with improved graphics. I wouldn’t go on that for ANYTHING. Anyway, I don’t care how the swordfighting is, all I care is that they playtest it and make it fun.
Anyway I think the spiel with load times shows what Nintendo’s priorities are: Simplicity and NO BS ease of you, and the fact that they were able to do this on a system as small as Wii is amazing. I fully beleive them when they say that a number of engineering breakthroughs were required to make Wii a reality.
Shinn - 08.29.06 7:49 pm
No matter what Ubisoft is going to say about Red Steel pre-release, I believe they won’t utterly screw up, and make a bad game. I feel confident they’ll make a good game, albeit without online at launch. And this WiiConnect24 update thing… could it be used with certain GCN games put in the system, so Wii functionality could be added to GCN games already out? Like adding online to Metroid Prime 2: Echoes’ multiplayer, or something.
LuckyBum - 08.29.06 9:35 pm
For a game like this, I’d rather Ubisoft concentrate on hammering down the controls than get side stepped trying to implement an online mode. I hope the multiplayer has campaign co-op though. I also want them to improve the animation when it comes to sword fights. The reaction of the opponent in that demo reel is pretty poor. You slice but he acts like he got hit at the shoulder… by a bullet. And you shouldn’t be causing damage on him if you swipe where his sword is. That should’ve been considered a block. He should be reacting and animating as if he was blocking too, especially when the player is merely doing random amaturish sword slashes. The reaction should be that his sword moves to the side as if the player carved out an opening where succeeding slashes will cause damage. That’s what I think.
