A while back I bought a Sony PSP, which I have been moderately, though not enthusiastically, happy with. My DS lite is my normal travel buddy. I take it everywhere. My Junior High School students, as well as the kids in my after-school conversation classes, know that it can always be found on my person. They also know that if they study hard and ask nicely, they can play it after class.
I wanted to give my PSP a bit of time as it has been totally ignored recently. But I didn’t have a case for it, and with the potential for scratches, this is a system that demands a case (and games, but that is another story). When I bought my DS lite, the kind lady at the shop gave me a free case. So the old case that I had been using for the DS Phat now became my PSP case. I find it sweetly ironic as it has a big Nintendo DS logo on it. The case works perfectly, and the pockets for GBA games are just the right size for UMDs. So I clipped this case to my belt, determined to clock some hours with this widescreen wonder.
But all I did was make children sad.

You see, my students had become accustomed to playing with the ever-present DS lite. After class, some girls came up as sasked, “Can we play Mario?” I explained that I didn’t have my DS with me, but one girl pointed to the case and its DS logo. I opened the case and watched their faces fall as they saw the PSP. I asked, “Would you like to play with this instead?”
They replied, “No.”
I loaded up “Minna no Golf,” which I think is a very good and rather cute game. It also has much better graphics than any of my DS games. They were totally unimpressed. Eventually, they said that they would just go home. They made me promise to bring the DS next time.
I got the same reaction from students all week, one disappointed student after another. One boy was very happy that I had a PSP, but became disappointed as well when he found out that I didn’t have the Gundam game. Has Nintendo really captured the hearts of young Japanese that strongly?
The PSP is still selling quite well (2nd best selling game system), but it is to a very different audience. It is desired by gadget aficionados, style conscious young adults, and hardcore gamers like myself who feel physically ill if we miss out on any system. To these students however, it is not an end-all multimedia device. It is just some shiny black thing that doesn’t play Animal Crossing. Even still, I never expected that kind of reaction. One 11-year-old boy actually cried. Cried. You can’t buy brand loyalty like that.
When I see this, it makes it seem like Nintendo is sure to dominate the next gen. But looks can be deceiving. When these same kids are asked if they are looking forward to the Wii, they just stare at me, puzzled. They don’t know what the Wii is, and they don’t much care what it is unless it has 2 screens and a touch pen. Nintendo has its work cut out for them after all.
As for me, I am thinking of buying a PSP case. Not for the PSP, but for my DS lite. I figure I can pleasantly surprise them this way. In any case, I have way too much free time on my hands.

Damn you Nintendo, making little kids addict to your awesome portable consoles

Nice story this, made me think that I really should get my DS Lite… But I’m still waiting on the DS Zelda to see if they come up with a special zelda-edition of the thing.
SpacyRicochet - 08.24.06 11:58 am
If I opened my DS case and found a PSP I’d cry too!
Fammy - 08.24.06 12:00 pm
I wouldn’t Fammy. I’d sell it and get a DS lite and a game!
Keeko_ca - 08.24.06 12:06 pm
was that your punishment for them misbehaving?? ..If not, you should be ashamed of yourself!!!
pcebdan - 08.24.06 12:08 pm
I wonder. If Sony doesn’t down the price of the PSP soon, it’llbe more expensive than the Wii. And that seriously ruin the PSP’s image.
NEEKS - 08.24.06 12:10 pm
You have to remember how the DS was perceived before it hit shelves and before people got a chance to try it; even Nintendo aficionados were skeptical, and until the excellent software started to hit (several months later), it was still a conundrum to most people, rather than the best-selling household name it has become. Wii will have several advantages at launch:
1. Incredible launch line-up, including a Zelda, Metroid and Warioware title, as well as innovative new ip’s such as Wii Sports.
2. Complete backwards-compatibility with all Gamecube games and most peripherals.
3. Already established online network immediately available.
4. Connectivity with the DS; this can only help boost sales of the Wii, as so many people have a DS at this point!
I wouldn’t worry too much about the public’s perception of Wii; soon enough, it will be a household name, just like DS.
batmyke - 08.24.06 12:18 pm
This was a very enjoyable story! It’s always nice to see a little window into real life, as opposed to the front-end marketing we usually get from the industry.
evilmax17 - 08.24.06 12:27 pm
Gradnia 2 is an awesome game btw.
NEEKS - 08.24.06 12:41 pm
Damn, Sony’s PSP made a kid cry?!?!
Well, now I gotta tell my friend (who is a die-hard Sony fanboy) to sell his PSP. I’m not sure how I’ll do it, but I promise you all that I WILL DO IT!
Marc - 08.24.06 12:49 pm
In the office I whipped out my Game Boy Micro and played the Minish Cap. Three of my female co-workers were there and one of them saw and asked what was I holding… She didn’t believe it when I said it was a Game Boy, so I showed her, and they were all like “wow!” She didn’t seem to enjoy the Zelda game much, but what struck me was that she was asking if I had a Mario game! And then the other one mentioned she liked Donkey Kong, and the other one said she remembered that you had to blow on the cartridge contacts to get the old games to work… Amusing sight for a gamer like me seeing these 20 something female professionals reminiscing classic games, with one screaming “I want Mario!” like a kid. Funny, they never mentioned a Sega or Sony game…
shingo - 08.24.06 1:00 pm
This anecdote warmed my heart. Mainly because I like the image of children crying at the sight of a PSP.
parish - 08.24.06 1:11 pm
The DS catching on like that wasn’t an instant thing and, really, before it even came out there I’m willing to bet the reaction of these same children was “Wha?”
Hopefully the Wii will strike the same chord with all sorts of audiences in the way the DS has. Nintendo has its work cut out for it, but riding the DS’s massive wave of success in that country would help immensely.
Tony - 08.24.06 1:12 pm
Holy crap Vinnk, your like a drug dealer. Kids are crying if they cant get their fix!

DS! Wii! Will rule/rules!
LutGerion - 08.24.06 1:43 pm
I almost cried when I read that you actually own a PSP. Shame!
geekRECON - 08.24.06 1:46 pm
*lmao* Great, Vinnk… making kids cry - I hope you are happy…
Telka! - 08.24.06 2:14 pm
Fank: While the VB isn’t allowed to be played by people under 7(if they are that old there) I’m sure they are untainted enough to love the ranging from neat to awesome visual effects and awesome title… erm, titles on it. Plus it’s Nintendo which is not the evil Sony.
About the subject matter, I find it rather touching too, I just hope you comforted them. I could see that one kid crying on your shirt as you hugged him and said something nice that basically meant “Okay, I’ll bring the awesome one next time.”, otherwise I’ll feel sad too.

ROFL!
Dean - 08.24.06 3:10 pm
Childhood brand loyalty didn’t keep Nintendo’s first place position from being usurped within a generation, so it can’t be worth all that much overall.
amanaplan - 08.24.06 3:43 pm
I actually keep my PSP in a DS case too. It’s actually kind
of embarrasing to be seen with a PSP for some reason.
realstar - 08.24.06 4:38 pm
Great article. My little 3 year old brother LOVES the DS. If I don’t let him play it when he wants to (which is pretty much always), he’ll start to cry. He actually had a nightmare the other day, screaming Mario. “Where’s Mario?” You know, I remember when I was a kid, and that’s all I could think of was Mario. I loved Mario, a heck of a lot. It’s quite funny. Nintendo doesn’t really have a battle against Sony or Microsoft. Their battle is against themselves. And that’s really the way to go. Always challenging yourself and evolving. Getting better. Personally, I love my DS. and I can’t wait for the Wii. Nothing agianst PS3 or 360, it’s simply that Wii has grabbed more of my interest. Peace.
Matthew - 08.24.06 5:26 pm
Sometimes I keep my DSlite in the promo katamari PSP case, LOL, but it kinda makes me sad as it reminds me that the DS katamari game went AWOL.
Davin - 08.24.06 6:43 pm
“This anecdote warmed my heart. Mainly because I like the image of children crying at the sight of a PSP.”
Agreed! That’s easily the best thing I’ve read all day.
Vinnk, if you can somehow get another kid to cry at the sight of a PSP, and take a photograph of that (PSP and crying kid in the shot), I would literally pay you for it.

it seems with Wii/DS connectivity, nintendo is trying to get ds owners to buy a ds not the other way around as seen with the cube/gba conectivity.

What can I say?
Nintendo consoles are well known for having all of the latest movie based games.
Of course kids want your DS, they don’t are incapable of common sense, aka, good gameplay.

fantastic story.

I teach English in Japan as well. It’s DS all the way here. PSP is a forbidden word in my school. All my kids digg MArio as well.

I just like the image of children crying.
I’m kidding - fantastic story though! I was skeptical of the DS when it first launched but I eventually bought one and I love it.
The idea of a young child crying at the sight of a PSP is absolutely priceless.

i think PSP is better. Im not saying i dont like mario but nintendo games arent as interesting anymore AND no nintendo system will ever have Grand Theft Auto…

errr. There’s many thirty something gamers too, but I don’t know any :/.
Dym - 08.25.06 5:21 pm
but doesn’t that re-iterate the fact that Nintendo is brand for kids?
after they grow up and know what high resolution, multi-channel audio is about, they’ll move onto PLAYSTATION 3 and Xbox 360 (in US, Japan is still lukewarm to MS)….
icepick314 - 08.25.06 6:37 pm
Jeez, Nintendo nuts are worse than Mac evangelists, these days… SHAME for owning a PSP? GTA is ‘lame’? ‘Warmed my heart’ to hear of a child crying at the sight of a PSP?
Frankly, you’re all a bunch of intolerably pompous fanboys. I have both, and both still have a long way to go before they achieve a truly excellent and diverse library of, say, the GBA. For now, the PSP has too many straight PS2 ports and the DS has too many ‘been there, done that’ Mario retreads.
Then again, I’m not a spoiled 11yo who CRIES when he’s unable to play teacher’s copy of Animal Crossing. Methinks someone needs to look more deeply into developmental issues, and I’m not talking PSP game devs, either.
sickofthefanboys - 08.25.06 6:39 pm
mario retreads? like sm64ds and…?
one game?
TakaM - 08.25.06 6:43 pm
Your story’s extra interesting and your writing skills exquisite. Well done my friend… made my day.
Elias - 08.25.06 6:44 pm
I find most of these comments to be so damn biased. I myself loved Nintendo, untill now. With the “Revolution” being renamed to a bathroom joke. And the egageration of the remote, I am just not as interested. Before they announced the controller, and the new name I was excited. But now I learn that I may have to excercise to play my game? That is the reason why I do not play Eyetoy anyore.
Next is the DS. I would buy it, if the games had didn’t use the touch feature. I was playing the DS at my friend’s house. I played Super Mario 64, and the touch screen was completely pointless. And now do not tell me that there are games that use it to it’s full potential. Well those games suck, I am waiting to see how Phantom Hourglass will play before I choose to buy my DS.
I right now am really into PC gaming, but I can not take PC gaming everywhere can I? That is why I am saving up to by myself a Notebook. The PS3 and PSP are really popular with the teenagers, if you get either one, you are like a God to them. But I agree with the fact that kids love Nintendo
MATT - 08.25.06 7:58 pm
if games aren’t for kids, how are kids supposed to grow up to like games? or computers for that matter? *sarcasm* i got a good idea, let’s teach children how to throw basketballs at each others’ heads *end sarcasm*
i would also like to note that portables (not desktops, not laptops, not subnotebooks, not consoles) are the future of both computing and gaming. touch-screen technology, solid-state disks (aka flash), and networking capabilities (wifi, wimax (or mesh/ad-hoc), microphone, camera, gps) are dominant in portables. the PSP and the DS-Lite compete. the GBA, Wii, and PS3 do not.
however, because the Wii will be able to sync with the DSL and the DSL can be used as a controller for the Wii - there will be tons of synergy. also note that the DSL plays GBA games (but it can’t link to a GBA or GBA/Gamecube).
nintendo has a greater plan, and i think that kids are learning the future faster than we are selling it to them, and faster than stock analysts or technology reviewers can spread their lies and speculations. this is why Vinnk’s story is so relevant.
dre - 08.25.06 8:16 pm
This has to be the best thing I have read all day! Makes me feel good to know that I never got a PSP.
I think the Wii will have some competition and that competition will not be MS or Sony, but the true competition for the Wii will be the DS Lite. If they can make the DS owners see the benefits they gain for the DS by owning a Wii then I think Nintendo will be ready to take back the video game industry with a nice healthy relationship between the handheld and console markets.
DOTQWERTY218 - 08.25.06 10:42 pm
its better to have psp you can do a lot more, than just playing games. psp is best for including music, online , and your own videos.imagine i freaked the kids that mario could be played on psp, scary. hahaha. the loved having psp. the kids know about early nintendo. so the teacher was cool then the kids. psp is ahead of it time.
drew - 08.25.06 11:44 pm
It’s amazing how kids’ minds can be deformed by peer pressure and conformism. Adults too, but in different domains.
Mars - 08.26.06 12:34 am
Hopefully someone will see my comment way down here, but is the PSP and the DS case in the picture actually the ones that the person that wrote the article has? Because I was considering getting that case (because the Hori Multi Pouches for the DS Lite look ugly) but I was wondering how a DS Lite would fit in that case. If someone has that combo (DS Lite original Hori Multi Pouch) let me know how they go together.
rainking187 - 08.26.06 2:40 am
well PSP is way better….. Nintendo is for any age under 11 then after that your just a fag. I bet on the DS you cant listen to your own music while playing your games, or watch videos (music, porn, ect…)! so ha i win
Gamer07 - 08.26.06 4:14 am
Actually, if you buy a Play Yan you can play movies and music on your DS just fine. As far as porn goes, I’m a big boy so I just watch it on my TV, I don’t have to watch it on my tiny PSP screen so I don’t get caught if my mommy walks in.
rainking187 - 08.26.06 5:05 am
Yesterday it was my mom’s birthday and my ten year old nephew just drooled over my DS. So I gave him a run at NSMB, but he didn’t do anything but just holding it and tremble. It was like he kissed a girl for the first time.

For my GBA SP I use a cheap square shaped bag that I got at a “girl-store” that sold makeup and plastic jewelry. If it works it works.
Scarabus - 08.26.06 9:46 am
You’ve got to be kidding me right? Well it’s an 11 year old KID, I cried myself to sleep if I didn’t get the latest toy and eventually I have grown out of that habit and now I am 19.
I have nothing against DS, I had a GBA once but it… well I should say “its games” just weren’t my cup of tea so I gave ‘em to my 8 year old nephew who was quite happy.
I just don’t see why some kids, fanboys alike have this PSP-phobia because they have some brand loyalty to Nintendo. It’s ok for someone to just like one system but when I see people dissing the PSP because it initially lacked original games and over 16 months later they are still dwelling in the past is big joke to me. People like these inherently refuse to give PSP credit where its due.
Anyway I’m pretty happy with my PSP, like you Vinkk I’m also a hardcore gamer and gadget addict. I use it everyday for its most features, except UMD movies which is probably the only thing I hate about PSP.
I wish some people would grow up to see the better side of this system.
Dew - 08.26.06 3:57 pm
I’m not sure if people were dissing the PSP because it didn’t have original games, they were dissing it because it didn’t have good games. And 16 months later that’s still a perfectly valid argument. The only games so far that make me even consider getting a PSP are Me and My Katamari and Silent Hill Origins. And that second one won’t even be out for a while.
rainking187 - 08.26.06 6:24 pm
Alright, i have a PSP, and i love it. WAIT! Dont come to my house and kill me! I agree, there arent that many good games for PSP. In fact, ive had it almost a year, and i have 2 PSP games. Instead, i download emulators, and instantly have acess to over 1000 games, including SNES, gameboy, gameboy advance, and SEGA games. Sure, i cant play the latest DS games, but having just about every nintendo game from the past is even better. Thats why i have PSP.
Adam - 08.27.06 1:52 am
Rainking, since you mentioned Silent Hill Origins, which is not even out yet I’m assuming that you think it will be a good game. In that case why not these games?

After seeing such a lineup of games, especially the upcoming titles which have been mostly praised by game critics who got to play or see them, why is it so difficult admit PSP indeed has better games and a lot more coming out soon?
You may not like all the games I listed but when you look at the bigger picture you’ll see PSP has games suited for everyone. This diversity is what makes PSP better than DS when people get tired of rehashed Mario games. It’s just old-skool hype.
Dew - 08.27.06 9:43 am
That is just awesome. Pure awesome.
Alex - 08.27.06 9:52 am
It’s dificult to admit, because on that entire list there’s maybe five games I would play. And I’ll start listening to critics when they stop praising the GTA games. The DS has just as many varied titles. As far as people not wanting rehashed Mario games, you haven’t looked at any sales figures for the New Super Mario Bros. game yet, have you?

PS. I’m gathering you’re all English? The DS has way more titles out in Japanese than in English. It also has a huge following with adults and Brain Training.

the psp was suppose to be the ds killer what happen? ill tell u what happen. sony wasted alot of money and time puttin all thier time on graphics and other crap befoe they relize they ewere makin a game machine not a portable dvd and still the ds came on top with game after game seriously sumone give me 10 psp games that scoerd higher than an 7.5. it kind of makes u wonder about how the next gen consol war is goin to turn out
javontae - 08.28.06 11:17 am
As for the guy saying PSP does a lot more. For the same price as a PSP (no games, no memory) I can get a DS Lite, a game and a PassMe + FlashCart so I can listen to MP3s, watch videos, homebrew and emulators.
As for porn, I’m also a big boy, theres TV and my computer for that, or I can just go out and get a freakin girlfriend. If you need a media player to watch porn, you seriously need to get a life and get help for your obsession over porn.
I love my DS wouldn’t change it for anything, I actually have 2 DS’ the phat and Lite one. I actually was thinking to get a PSP instead of the Lite, thats until I saw how much homebrew you can put on your DS. If I ever get anything else, it would be for a GP2X.
