Weekly Sales Charts (August 6-13)

Here’s another massive dose of sales rankings from around the globe. Nothing from the US, Germany, or Norway this week. However, we are pleased to have information from the Spanish, the Danish, and the Swedish.

Read on for sales data from nine nations.

Japanese Software (August 7-13)
# Name (System) Sales (LTD)
1. New Super Mario Bros. (DS) 117,706 (2,731,934)
2. Tamagotchi Shop 2 (DS) 66,564 (334,875)
3. Melty Blood: Act Cadenza (PS2) 64,980 (new)
4. Brain Age 2 (DS) 59,585 (2,985,432)
5. Cooking Navi (DS) 57,257(290,960)
6. Animal Crossing: Wild World (DS) 44,201 (3,077,295)
7. Brain Age (DS) 38,954 (2,688,146)
8. SD Gundam Generation G Portable (PSP) 36,592 (192,227)
9. Fist of the North Star Pachislot (PS2) 33,951 (116,507)
10. Kirarin * Revolution: Kira Kira Idol Audition (DS) 33,332 (new)

Japanese Hardware (August 7-13)
DSL 196,719
PSP 41,289
PS2 26,547
GBASP 3,051
GBM 2,031
Xbox360 1,204
GC 940
DS 934
GBA 23
Xbox 6

NSMB easily retook the top slot this week, bringing it that much closer to the three million mark. Both Brain Age games are also creeping towards that goal. Thanks to a new ad campaign, Animal Crossing jumped back up to sixth place.

Despite Nintendo’s best efforts, the DS Lite remains nearly sold out nationwide. Numbers remain impressive nonetheless. The original Xbox suffered a drop in sales this week. Maybe we’ll see another zero week soon? The PSP is also doing well, riding on the success of the recent Gundam game.

Final Fantasy III comes out next week, so it will be very interesting to see the Japanese sales charts two weeks from now.

UK Software (July 30- August 5)
# Name (System)
1. Cars (Multiple Systems)
2. Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories (PS2/PSP)
3. New Super Mario Bros. (DS)
4. The Sims (PC)
5. Brain Training (DS)
6. Sims 2 (PC)
7. Pro Evolution Soccer 5 (PS2)
8. Need for Speed: Most Wanted (PSP)
9. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest (Multiple Systems)
10. Over the Hedge (Multiple Systems)

The original Sims is still selling well thanks to a huge retail promotion. Other than that, there’s nothing much worth noting in the UK.

French Software (August 7-13)
# Name (System)
1. New Super Mario Bros. (DS)
2. Animal Crossing: Wild World (DS)
3. Brain Age (DS)
4. Formula 1 2006 (PS2)
5. Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories (PS2)
6. Nintendogs: Dalmatian & Friends Edition (DS)
7. Big Brain Academy (DS)
8. Pro Evolution Soccer 5 Platinum (PS2)
9. Mario Kart DS (DS)
10. Pirates of the Caribbean: Legend of Jack Sparrow (PS2)

Animal Crossing rose one spot to take second place and Big Brain Academy dropped to seventh. Sony’s Formula 1 game rose several spots also this week.

Australia Software (August 6-12)
1. AFL Premiership 2006
2. SingStar Anthems Bundle
3. New Super Mario Bros.
4. Need for Speed: Most Wanted
5. Cars
6. Guitar Hero
7. World of Warcraft
8. Buzz: The Big Quiz Bundle
9. SingStar Rocks! Bundle
10. Brain Training

The AFL game is still enjoying brisk sales in the land down under. As expected, NSMB and Brain Age are being enjoyed by Aussies everywhere.

Irish Software (August 6-12)
1. Cars
2. Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories
3. Pro Evolution Soccer 5
4. New Super Mario Bros.
5. The Sims 2
6. FIFA World Cup 2006
7. The Matrix: Path of Neo
8. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
9. Need for Speed: Most Wanted
10. Pirates of the Caribbean: Legend of Jack Sparrow

For some reason (probably a sale), The Matrix and GTA: San Andreas have fought their way back into the Irish top sellers. NSMB dropped a place on the chart, but continues to do well.

New Zealand Software (August 6-12)
1. Buzz: The Big Quiz Bundle
2. World of Warcraft
3. SingStar Anthems Bundle
4. Guitar Hero
5. Need for Speed: Most Wanted
6. SingStar Rocks! Bundle
7. Cars
8. Eyetoy: Play 3 Pack
9. Buzz: The Big Quiz
10. The Sims 2: Open Business

The lack of love for Nintendo is still present in NZ this week. However, they continue to gobble up the PS2 SingStar series.

Swedish Software (August 6-12)
1. World of Warcraft
2. Grand Theft Auto Liberty City Stories
3. New Super Mario Bros
4. The Sims 2 Arbetsliv
5. The Sims 2 Kul för familjen: prylpaket
6. The Sims 2 (PC)
7. Pirates of the Caribbean: Legend of Jack Sparrow
8. Civilization 4 – Warlords
9. Trafikskolan TEO 2006
10. Battlefield 2

The Swedish sure love their Sims. Will Wright’s popular PC title and its expansions take up three of the ten slots.

Danish Software (August 6-12)
1. GTA Liberty City Stories
2. The Sims 2: Open for Business
3. Pro Cycling Manager 2006
4. World of Warcraft
5. The Sims 2: Family Fun
6. The Sims 2
7. Singstar: Anthems
8. FIFA Street 2
9. The Sims 2- Nightlife
10. Counter-Strike Source

It seems that something is rotten in the state of Denmark. The Danish, like their NZ compatriots, seems to be completely ignoring Nintendo products. Anybody know what’s up there? The PS2 and the PC dominate the charts.

Spanish Software (July)
# Name (System)
1. Brain Training (DS)
2. Cars (PS2)
3. New Super Mario Bros. (DS)
4. Nintendogs: Dalmatian (DS)
5. GTA: Liberty City Stories (PS2)
6. Pro Evolution Soccer 5 Platinum (PS2)
7. Big Brain Academy (DS)
8. Cars (DS)
9. Animal Crossing: Wild World (DS)
10. Formula 1 2006 (PS2)

The Spanish, however, love the DS. Even licensed handheld games, like Cars, are doing brisk sales on the DS. The occasional PS2 game does well, but this country has been added to the Nintendo cult.

We’re done for this week (insert sigh of relief). Our quest to conquer the world continues unabated, so be sure to send more countries my way.

Australia is buying NSMB, that’s a good thing at least..

First of all, a big special thanks to you all at 4CR for including as much data as you do. It’s easy to just put up the weekly Japanese sales data and call it a day, but I really appreciate all of the extra stuff from Europe, etc. Now, onto the data itself. It’s great to see that New Super Mario Bros. is back at #1 in Japan. Nintendo has got to be happy with their Italian plumber’s latest efforts all around the world. Also, sure enough, the DS Lite was #1 yet again, and by a lot. Overall, Nintendo is doing very well world wide.

One thing I’d love to see from you guys is a TOTAL number. Say next to the Japanese sales figures for software and hardware for the week, you could make a list of what each item has sold thus far for the year. That’d be a tremendous help. Thank you for your time and keep up the great work.

After examining the charts longer, it becomes that much more interesting why Nintendo could do so well in some European countries, but in others…so-so. Also, what I meant to say earlier was a request if you could include overall sales figures for hardware like you already do with software in Japan. One step better would be listing how many weeks those respective games have been on the charts in Japan. That way we can be even more amazed by the likes of Nes Super Mario Bros., Animal Crossing, and the Brain Training games by Nintendo for the DS. :)

I’m pretty sure only Japan has actual sales numbers available, everywhere else you can only get chart positions for each title.

I’m pretty sure that in the case of New Zealand, Nintendo releases are handled my a third-party vendor that, to use the vernacular, friggin’ sucks ass. I seem to remember someone lamenting that their distribution and marketing are atrocious.

Paul Gale from 1up.com, whom I’ve mostly seen at gamesarefun.com, is now here? Hmm. Well, he makes good posts.

I just find it amazing that NSMB is nearing 3 million in such a short time!

I’ll see what I can do for hardware.

I lived in Spain for 6 weeks this summer, and the DS presence is in fact quite strong. Despite the games being extremely expensive to an American gamer (40-50 Euro is the common rate – why don’t they all just ebay?), a superior advertising push has done the trick for Nintendo in Spain it seems. I wish NOA would launch such an advertising campaign in the states.. it was fairly impressive.

Nintendo is taking over the world. =(

Miyamoto says “One of us, one of us…”
Reggie says “Resistance is futile.”

Lord, I sorely dislike the entries charted up as ‘multiple systems’ (see the UK). Tells me naught.

Good news from Toronto! I’ve actually seen, with my own eyes, Nintendo ads in the subway! A sea change, surely, at Nintendo of Canada.

Looks like Spain is leaving the PS2 behind, like other countries, and buy DS stuff. Spain used to be a Ps1/Ps2 casual gamer market, but now it’s all hendhelds. Am I the only one, or there’s practically no PSP titles in the charts? xP

Cars again in the UK??? That’s like what? 3-4 weeks straight on the top?

My first post, just to say, great site.
Cheers for the Irish charts, good to know someone knows we exist;)
DS seems WAAY more popular here than the PSP among kids… maybe it’s all about the fact you can get it in pink hehe.
Fifa/GTA etc very popular here among the non hardcore gamers, the Wii vs PS3 figures when they release should be very interesting.

Wow. Cooking Navi at number 5. I’d love to play a cooking simulation of grilling that irritating little fairy. I guess the Japanese share my point of view. ;]

NSMB sure has some stamina. Can you design a videogame to have stamina? Can you roll a d20 and assign stamina points?

Holy crap, I just said d20. That must mean my nerdliness is complete.

Notice how the Gundam game started at number 1 last week and dropped to number 8 this week. After this week, it will likely never be seen on the top ten charts ever again. It has little stamina. They probably spent too many points on charisma, and that will only get you so far.

NSMB has proven itself as the Master of Unlocking.

*PAPERCUT, Actually, this isn’t the first time I’ve come to 4CR. I’m quite fond of this site and have been a visitor pretty much since the beginning. One thing that was really cool was at this past E3 when I met the gang from 4 Color Rebellion. I was playing Super Mario Galaxy and before/after we talked about all stuff Nintendo. And another thing PAPERCUT, you’re totally right about NSMB…almost 3 million already! It could end up being the best selling game of 2006 in Japan. However, I have a feeling that that honor might go to Pokemon Diamond/Pearl. (Thanks for the nice comment too).

*GREG, thanks a lot!
