An interesting video has surfaced on the interwebs. Entitled “The Nintendo Difference,” this video was created to promote the GameCube before the system was released. The video gives us a very interesting glimpse of what could have been.
The four-minute video gives us brief previews of a bunch of GCN games. Several of them are close to what we ended up seeing (Rogue Leader, Wave Race, SSBM). A few of the titles shown had features that wouldn’t be in the final version (clock in Luigi’s Mansion, racing around town in Animal Forest/Crossing). Several of the titles - Raven Blade (action game from Retro), Kameo (finally released on the Xbox 360), and Donkey Kong Racing - would never even see release on the GCN.
Take a look at the video for an interesting trip through the early stages of the GameCube.

“and Diddy Kong Racing”
I believe it’s Donkey Kong Racing.

OMG? Raven Blade? That looks sweet! What happened to it???
And was this shown at E3 2001? I dont remember seeing it. The music is kinda eerie, if you ask me…
One more thing this video made me think of? How perfect Pikmin 3 would be for Wii. WHile I was watching that early footage, I visualized using the Wiimore for it! That will be sweet…
WTF was up with the fat, sad luigi?
Kameo wasnt released for the GC, was it?

@ fireworksordie
You’re right.

There was a 3D Mickey Mouse game released for the GCN- “Disney’s Magical Mirror Starring Mickey Mouse”. Ha. The visuals look very similar to this footage, and it’s most likely that this game was the result of this project.
yay!

“a 3D Mickey Mouse game would never even see release on the GCN.”
Actually, that game was released. It’s called Disney’s Magical Mirror: Starring Mickey Mouse.

Really?

Shows how much I know.

Actually, I think Raven Blade ended up looking really bad before it was cancelled.

Man how I missed my GC. I have a black GC with a LCD screen attached, its the best screen for GC, with surround sound. When the cover is closed, it looks like a helmet protector for that cute console. Before my DS came along, its my portable system - I sold it and now I am waiting for wii.
Pikmin 3 would be cool on wii! I can pick carrots just jerking that wiimote up and down hehehe.

Anyone know where the online multiplayer space shooter game is on here? The one where the server went down, help would be appreciated.
Shy Guy - 08.07.06 3:57 pm
coulda sworn I saw that at Toys R Us when the GC launched. They showed that video over and over.

“just jerking that wiimote up and down hehehe.”
I’m baaad, I know. It’s cause I have a power glove.

Well, we will be getting a DK Racing game soon (Bongo Blast), though it doesn’t look anything like the footage in that video.

I remember seeing Kameo and Donkey Kong racing on my GCN’s box when I got it back in November 2001, maybe I should try and find that box and get a picture? Unfortanate that Rare Ltd. had to leave Nintendo, but they believed it was the best choice and it hasn’t been ALL bad so far…
And yeah, the GCN does blow compared to other systems’ success, but at least theres some games worth getting
.
LuckyBum - 08.07.06 10:17 pm
Hey what you meant by GCN ‘blow’? Its the best system compared to ps2 and xbox.
xbox = pc games with crappier gfx.
ps2 = clone galore. Only a few games are original, the rest are xerox copy of other games.
Gamecube can survive without the need for any 3rd party developers because Nintendo makes the most innovative and fun games in the world. In terms of fun and originality, GCN is like a breath of fresh air compared to the stale boring games on xbox and ps2. If you want to compare gfx, GCN’s games range from cel-shaded (Zelda, Viewtiful Joe) to realistic (Resident evil zero and 4). Its a powerful system housed in that cute looking cube.
I am not a fan boy, I have all 3 systems. Its a honest opinion of a jaded gamer.
Chris - 08.08.06 6:45 am
Sorry, but you most obviously are a fan boy by those system “reviews”. Maybe one in denial, but a fan boy none the less.

god that music was freaky! Felt like I was watching unsolved mysteries or something.
screw DK bongo blast…diddy kong racing is coming out on the DS!
redlinefoo - 08.08.06 10:42 pm
I know, that music sounded like the Xfiles or something
I want a trailer with that music for the Wii!
Hurricane Mario - 08.09.06 12:57 am
Woohoo, Donkey Kong Racing! I remember this video from however many years ago it came out. Does anyone remember the N64 promo video that had that scene of Mario battling Bowser in SM64? When Bowser jumped and the ENTIRE LEVEL tilted, it was the absolute most awesomest (excuse the double superlative) graphical effect seen to the point.
