Many of us will remember Victor Ireland as the ultimate fanboy. He even formed a company, Working Designs, to bring his favorite Japanese games to American shores. Although they closed last year, Working Designs will always be remembered for bringing the Lunar series to American RPG fans.
Now, Victor is back with a new company, Gaijinworks. The fledgling company sounds like it will work much in the same way as the former Working Designs. Gaijinworks will work to bring some of their favorite Japanese games to other countries, no matter how small the potential audience.
When asked about the name, Victor added the following:
It really isn’t that complicated. It’s all about turning a negative into a positive and communicating what we do succinctly. “Gaijin” is literally “outsider”, and it’s commonly held as a derogatory Japanese tag. The “Works” is implying a foundry or such like place where craftsmen work something fluid into something strong and solid. The logo is a Japanese (modern) flag with a gear around the middle. Gaijinworks. Literally, a place where damned outsiders craft Japanese games into stuff for you to care about in English.
However, one major difference did present itself in the initial announcement.
Also, while Working Designs brought its games solely to the PS/PS2 audience, it seems that Gaijinworks won’t be focusing on one system.
I can’t say much at the moment except that Gaijinworks will not be console-monogamous. I don’t hate Nintendo, and the economics of the DS are improving almost daily as the console takes off and manufacturing turn time improves. Point of fact, you could see Gaijinworks on consoles anywhere…or everywhere.
It looks like Victor is taking a very strong look at the DS and its growing library of games. Working Designs faced all sorts of monetary problems during its existence, perhaps Gaijinworks will fair better with a more platform-agnostic strategy. We wish them all the luck in the world and look forward to seeing some new work from Victor.

This is trully fantastic news. I cannot fathom the gaming industry without a company like Working Designs and Victor Ireland.

Dear God YES!

As long as he learns from the mistakes(what few) Working Designs had, then I’m happy.
I only wish I could work for the company.

Sounds pretty cool, it’ll be interesting to see what comes from this…

Well, I hope they won’t end up doing just RPGs. I know us americans would love to see a translation for Jump Superstars!:)

They also did some Saturn titles, but I doubt most people remember or care lol.
I had issues with the company. Some of their difficulty/etc changes were unnecessary and hurt the games (although some helped). Some of their pop-culture references in games really just helped date them too. At the same time, it’s nice when random games come over like the ones they usually bothered with. Lunar 2 is excellent and I enjoyed Silhouette Mirage.

Jump Superstars would be a nightmare to port, In japan all of the characters are registered under one brand name but in USA they are liscensed to many various companies.
And what are any examples of difficulty changing in games that were ported? That really sucks, I want the full game with its original difficulty.

Perhaps a Goemon DS translation is on the way? The one they were doing for the PS2 got canned, and it seems to have been passed over by Konami.

I want Boktai 3 PLEASE
Nicol@s - 07.30.06 1:47 am
There is a Boktai 3, its called Lunar Knights.

Great news! I personaly would want a Wonder Project 1+2 out here for DS, since Squeemix can’t be bothered to put it out in English.

Not only did they do a few Saturn games, they did Sega CD and TG-16 games too
Honestly, I won’t miss WD. With Atlus, NIS, and Squeenix bringing over practically every title they do now, the well has run a bit dry for this type of nice publisher.
While the lunar games were great, no doubt, the meddling they did with gameplay (see Silhouette Mirage) and the head-butting with SCEA (see Goemon PS2) ultimately did them in.

DiGassio Band of Brothers!!! Please, please, please! Since Big N seems to have dropped all plans to port this, and I want it sooooo bad. And considering the massive success of Oendan, there might even be a market for it!

Working Designs didn’t focus just on PS1/2! They were one of the biggest Sega supporters until a fallout happened between the two. Anyway, it’s good news. I agree with prototype though, they need not meddle with gameplay especially when it comes from craftsmen like Treasure!

I disagree with prototype though we need more of these publishers, their can never be “enough”. Their are tons of titles that are not brought over: shooters, platformers like umihara kawase, and Stafi, action games like Earth Defence Force 2, etc… no i disagree we can never have enough quality games… no matter where they are developed.

Well, for one, D3 has just set up a US shop, so those Simple 2000 games are not far off. Rumor has it that lots of previously-unreleased JP games are headed for the PS2. With the upcoming release of the PS3, Sony has basically decided to let anything through.
Which should be good for shmup fans, at the very least.
