For too long the media has spread around false ideals of what a proper form factor for a portable GameCube should be. The image above is not what real portable GameCubes look like friends… and the unrealistic expectations communicated to our GameCubes by the media needs to stop. In fact, a healthy, normal portable GameCube looks something like the picture on the right.
Weighing in at a healthy 2kgs (about 4 and a half pounds for us yanks…) and costing about $350, the lil’ feller is obviously a labor of love. Portable is a bit of a misnomer for now… as PortaGCN still has to be plugged into a wall, but creator Ben Hartland says that an external battery pack is in the works. Ben also is looking to slim down and streamline the design even more… and is outlining the process on these forums. Hopefully Ben raises his little GCN to know that having a little extra meat on your bones is okay..

Benny,
You’re right. It’s not fat…..it’s Phat!

It’s a whole Gamecube…

The one on the left is a gamecube lite the one on the right is a gamecube phat.

Where did the shot on the left come from?
amanaplan - 07.26.06 3:51 pm
Photoshop. May even predate the DS. Portable GameCube = Next Game Boy rumors were popular a while back.

Where’s Ben Heckendorn when you need him?

The picture on the left would have been the next Gameboy, but we all know that the DS has killed the Gameboy Evolution. And that my friends is how you lie.

Actually, if Nintendo had made a portable Gamecube they could likely make it closer to the one on the right.

fantastic!
TYTY - 07.26.06 7:27 pm
The one on the right is ridiculous. He just hooked some handles and a screen to a whole Gamecube. I think any respectable attempt at a portable Gamecube would at least take the components out of the big boxy casing.

… Why does that white Gamecube look like it can play normal-sized CDs/DVDs?
JDavis - 07.26.06 8:29 pm
Reminds of the Mac SE. Looks cute though.

Well Pat, my punctuationally-challenged friend, I kinda doubt Nintendo will ever make a portable gamecube, simply because it would just play the same old games that people already have. They wouldn’t be buying a whole new set of games for it. And we all know games are where Nintendo makes their money, not on the hardware. So any new portable would also come with a new cartridge or disc format. Besides, making the gamecube hardware portable-sized would be very expensive. It is a shame though, because I’d love to have one and the tiny little gamecube discs are the perfect size.

What a moron, at least put it in some new casing to make it condensed down in size, you dont just tape everything together in one big mess of the original casing. He needs some lessons from Ben Heck.

To the haters: why don’t you make a portable GC to show how it should be made? No, you can’t? Aww.
Dym - 07.27.06 5:12 am
Looks great to me, even though I can use it for weight lifting with my puny little geek muskles..
Krono6 - 07.27.06 5:54 am
Whoever built that would of been better off waiting for the wii to come out since it has gamecube support and really isn’t all that much bigger than that.
Halopend - 07.27.06 10:42 am
some of those mock-ups are cool

Anyone could duct tape a power supply to the bottom of a Gamecube and attach a controller to it.
