Nintendo’s mighty little handheld has hit another milestone today. The combined sales of the DS and DS lite have passed twenty-one million units worldwide.

This is almost unprecedented in the gaming world. This means that the system has sold 21,270,000 units in less than twenty months, most of those in the past year. Approximately one unit has been sold every two seconds since the launch. To put this in perspective, the GameCube has only sold twenty-one million units in the past five years.

Riding high on the success of the DS, Nintendo also announced that their profit forecast for the next year is $711 million, up from $556 million last year. Their profits in the first quarter of this year were up ten percent, mostly because of the launch of the DS lite. Net income this quarter was $134 million, an additional $14 million higher than first quarter of the last fiscal year.

Based on their recent success, Nintendo estimates that they will sell six million Wii consoles and seventeen million games during this fiscal year. On the handheld front, Nintendo estimates that they will sell seventeen million DS units and seventy-five million pieces of DS software this year.

In other financial news, Nintendo’s Shaberu! DS Oryouri Navi has reportedly sold over 100,000 units, 73,000 of those on its lauch date in Japan. Shaberu! DS Oryouri Navi is not actually a game; it’s a voice-activated cookbook for the DS. Very impressive showing for what many considered a niche title. The GCN version of Battle Stadium D.O.N., a Smash Bros. inspired brawler staring several of the popular Shonen Jump manga characters, sold 21,000 units last Thursday. The PS2 version of the same title sold 37,000 units.
