A magazine ad has popped up for the upcoming Animal Crossing movie. In case you missed the news when the animated film was first announced last May, Nintendo hopes to marry a sweet-tempered storyline with the colorful themes that made the game so popular.

A quick glance at the advertisement shows the female protagonist keeping company with a young ninja. With that sort of match-up, could we expect something similar to an anime remake of Bonnie and Clyde? Two lovers — one a small-town girl, the other a small-time practitioner of the ancient art of ninjutsu — both caught up in a deadly game of robbery and romance. The coupled criminals terrorize the Animal Crossing countryside until they’re ambushed by the law and gunned down outside the steps of Nook ‘n Go.

The movie is set to debut in Japanese theatres this December 16th. Plans for a stateside showing have yet to be announced. We’ll be sure to keep you posted if anything comes up.

And that reminds me… We tried creating our own animated short for Animal Crossing several months ago, but uh… The results weren’t exactly family friendly. The film would be more appropriately titled Brokeback Crossing, in fact.
