Like Mr. Miyamoto himself, I’m a huge fan of traditional American Bluegrass music. Ever since I was a child, I have been drawn to that “high lonesome sound”, that sweet melody, and those ‘old tyme’ tales of tragic misfortune and the music of the old west. I began at an early age learning to play the “flat-pick” style of guitar, and only recently have begun to understand the secrets of those dusty melodies.
Melding two of my passions together, I am proud to bring to 4 color rebellion the fusion of that ‘high lonesome sound’ with tales from Hyrule and the Mushroom Kingdom…

performing an interpretation of Jack Bonus’ “The Hobo Song”
Mario the Hobo mp3
Read the lyrics after the jump…

Mario the Hobo
too late to feel sorrow
too late to feel pain
he’s just an old hobo
asleep out in the rain
he’ll never cause trouble
so don’t have no fear
cus he’s just an old hobo
and he’ll soon be far away from here
*Chorus:
He used to be a ramblin’ man, just like you
until he sank so low, there was nothin’ no one could do
his brother Luigi
ran off with his love
she wore a pink dress
and pearl white gloves
he gave her his heart
he gave her his soul
his brother betrayed him
and left him all alone
(chorus)
he was a war hero
known all through the land
he saved their fair kingdom
with his own bare hands
he killed a hundred koopas
with one turtle shell
and his brother betrayed him
ran off with his angel
(chorus)

Amazing. I listened to this at least 20 times already today. Makes me feel like clapping, dancing and swigging some moonshine. Excellent work Octorok!

Listened again… damn fine pickin’. That guitar solo in the middle is freakin intense! Love it. Octorok, sign my boobies with a sharpie!

Dude. Dude. That freakin’ rocked. There needs to be an album of that good stuff.
Orayn - 07.10.06 8:28 pm
Wow, very nice work, Octorok! I assume you’re playing guitar in this… are you singing lead or backup?
I too am a big bluegrass fan, who (like you, I’m guessing) found Old & in the Way to be my “gateway” album. I’ve been in a band or two also, playing guitar and/or mandolin, and singing.

I have to be honest - I had my doubts in reading about your tune. However, I must say with all seriousness that you and your band are extremely talented and sound great. Reminded me of being a kid, listening to my hippy mom’s Grateful Dead albums. Thanks!

*Ears begin to bleed*
Wish I was kidding.
Hurricane Mario - 07.11.06 1:12 am
Yeah, my ears are bleeding too. Not only is the recording horrible but this is not bluegrass — just a stream of chords with awful singing on top. Blech. *runs off to find some real bluegrass on Last.fm*
Barry - 07.11.06 1:55 am
Yep, my ears won’t stop bleedin either!
Duane, I actually started listening to Bluegrass music as a kid, and although “old and in the way” certainly stands as one of my all-time favs (obviously), I didnt even hear that album until about 10 years ago when I discovered the Dead. Im 31 now.
My uncle (who used to babysit me) used to play banjo, and he and his buddies would often times jam while my cousins and I would sit and just listen. This is mainly why I started to play music.
Some of my first albums in the genre were old Bill Monroe and Scruggs Bros LPs, then I started to get into Chet Atkins, Hank Willims, and other ‘Honky Tonk’ artists. finally, after discovering the Dead, I really got into Jerry’s Bluegrass endeavours, and ultimately “old and in the way”
btw: Yep, Im playing guitar and singing. The rest of “the band” handels the rest. LOL.
=)

Super cool
ughe - 07.11.06 8:50 am
Funny… your “path” of intrest is pretty much the opposite of mine. I started with the Dead (when everyone else was into them in the early 90’s, at my high school at least), then O&itW > Grisman > Monroe. With some major Wesern Swing and Honkey Tonk “sidequests” in there.
Very cool, Octorok. You guys really can hit those harmonies.
Duane Cunningham - 07.11.06 11:23 am
I managed to catch Garcia/Grisman a few times… what great shows!
And the Dead, betweem 92 and 95 I saw them about 80 times (including JGB)- so if you’re on the west coast, we were probably at some of the same shows!
:P
