Details on Fire Emblem for the Wii are slowly trickling in and we’re on hand to bring you all of the information!
We know so far that there will be two protagonists. The first, Sothe, will already be familiar to anybody who has played last year’s excellent Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance. Sothe appears to be a little older this time around, implying that Path of Radiance is, in fact, a prequel to the Wii version. The second revealed character is an unidentified female who could possibly be Ilyana, another Path of Radiance veteran.
German site Games Cathedral has hinted that this game is going to be fully 3D. Path of Radiance was already partly in 3D, so it is possible that they are dropping the top-down perspective that has been a hallmark of this series to date.
Fire Emblem is one of the finest strategy series out there, so this is one Wii title to watch for. We’ll bring you more details as they come in.

Cool!

Sweet, I missed out on PoR though so i hope the story is stand alone also if he looked a little older wouldn’t that make it a sequel?
frazierguy - 07.10.06 12:01 pm
He said that PoR would be the prequel. So yes, the new one would be a sequel.
The whole Sothe and Ilyana thing is still speculation though. Sothe seems more likely than Ilyana at this point, but it’s still speculation.

I really liked the GBA Fire Emblems (as frustrating as they were) but something about the Gamecube one really bothered me. Actually, I’m pretty sure it was the graphics. I’m not gonna say it was because they were 3d and I hate 3d… but the game was really UGLY. Portraits were good, but the animations were stiff, characters were not detailed, and something about the color scheme just looked… really bad. It’s too bad I’m so shallow eh?
Joey - 07.10.06 1:28 pm
I never actually bothered with the previous Fire Emblems. I kind of doubt I’ll bother with this one. Though, the more the merrier.
Dascu - 07.10.06 1:55 pm
No, Joey, you’re right. The previous 2D games, in all their sprite based glory, were well animated and over the top in some of the attacks. And the colors were all kinds of grey.

“Path of Radiance was already partly in 3D, so it is possible that they are dropping the isometric perspective that has been a hallmark of this series to date.”
Um, what are you talking about? Fire Emblem has never been isometric. It’s always been straight top-down.
Definition of Isometric Perspective is available here:

A simple mistake, I’m sure.
Tyler - 07.10.06 2:35 pm
@Tyler
Whoops. My bad.
Greg - 07.10.06 2:39 pm
No big deal. Like I said, simple honest mistake.

YES! PoR was one of my fave Ninty experiences. The story was great and I really got into the characters (Mordecai was the MAN…err… Lion?)
Benny - 07.10.06 3:54 pm
I’ve yet to play a Fire Emblem I didn’t like, so I’m sure this one will be no exception. Using the wiimote will be great, just point at a unit, grab and move. Awesome!
Geoff - 07.10.06 3:57 pm
God, I love the visual style.
4ndii - 07.10.06 4:27 pm
Huh. I hope they put in some more animated cutscenes this time around, just because I think I’m one of the few who enjoys seeing actual cutscenes in actual Nintendo-made games.
And I really never used Sothe much. >>;
RYOJI - 07.10.06 6:06 pm
Sothe actually kinda sucked… his bigass tiger pal on the other hand…
Benny - 07.10.06 7:22 pm
w00t! This looks pretty cool so far. And I’m a big fan of Sothe.
I agree about the GC version’s graphics, but I still play Ultima IV for SMS, so what do I know?
wht.rbt - 07.10.06 7:58 pm
OMG thats awesome! I’m hoping Mia comes back, she was my best character, plus her support conversations were so funny (escpecailly the one where Ilyana trys to eat her foot, long story)
If that character is indeed Ilyana, she must have gotten over the whole eternaly-hungry thing, considering the lack of frailness and such.
Sothe did suck, but only cause he started out Lvl. 1, and you could get a much better thief in your party.

My girlfriend says to say:
“STOP SAYING IT’S ILYANA!!! HER HAIR ISN’T EVEN THE RIGHT COLOUR… DUHH!!”
She has a karate move called kneeling tiger, which I call crushing the grapes. She’ll use it if you don’t stop.
designerwhite - 07.10.06 9:17 pm
Dudes, designerwhite’s girlfriend is right.

The “new girl” had white hair. (Well, maybe very light purple).
She had yellow eyes.

(Can someone find a better picture??? Just Googled this one.)
Ilyana has a deeper purple hair.
Her eyes are also purple.

The “new girl” is at the most a relative of Ilyana, and at the least a complete stranger. Although since that green haired lad is Sothe, and this is direct sequal, Ilyana is in the same “game universe”.
yanipheonu - 07.10.06 9:39 pm
Wait, what the hell am I talking about? Sothe sucked!
It was Soren I loved!
wht.rbt - 07.10.06 10:43 pm
It’s not Ilyana. First off, looks nothing like her. They’ve got different eye colours, Ilyana is more petite, her hair is a light purple, not silver, and her overt happiness is much different since Ilyana was much more withdrawn. She also has no support conversations with Sothe. Plus the proportions are all out of whack with Ilyana’s.
Menzeeto - 07.11.06 12:56 am
It does somewhat resemble Ilyana, but she’s most likely the mysterious person that Sothe was looking for in Path of Radiance. There was a plot hole there, since he never actually find that person…
But then again, some people think that it must be someone else, since in a certain support conversation Sothe says he had a “father-figure” or something to that extent. That may or may not be referring to the person he’s looking for, though. But it’ll be interesting to see.
Nate - 07.11.06 9:39 am
So Sothe is older,
but “Ilyana” is not?
Because that makes sense…
Reikken - 07.11.06 7:55 pm
I love PoR so much but sothe does really suck!
nephenee is the kick butt character!!!
Oh and astrid 2!!
rikkamalikka - 07.13.06 9:26 am
Just wanted to say that Sothe is a great Character, a little patience and he is unbeatable
He never lost a battle on my game and he’s seen quite a few.
I’m really looking forward to this new game, was a bit disappointed when I couldn’t upgrade him, but hopefully I can in the next
Maiken - 07.16.06 3:59 pm
Okay this is all speculation and I just want you to know that if proven wrong (most likely) I’ll be okay. Anyway I haven’t seen the trailer for this one but this does look like Ilyana. But I don’t think its her. *slight spoiler* At the end of PoR a few of the characters move to Daein (the “bad” country”) among them are Sothe, Jill, Haar, Ilyana, and Zihark. If you had all the conversations between Zihark and Ilyana, Zihark mentions that she is cute. Someone in here wrote that the new “Ilyana” seems younger. I think you can tell where I’m heading with this. BTW Zihark’s hair is silver and this new “Ilyana’s” hair seems more silvery than purple. This is all speculation and I don’t have nearly enough evidence to back it up but I thought you guys might find it interesting.
Eurayle - 07.16.06 5:18 pm
Heh. I think I agree that Eurayle’s specultation is a possibility, but it seems more likely to me that Nate is right. Also, Maiken is right about Sothe being really awesome if you level him up…but it’s too dang hard. Soren is pretty cool (personality too) but Gatrie and Boyd were definitely the best fighters. There weren’t very many Jeigens in that game, but some of the ones that started out weak did NOT get stronger, which stunk. PoR has awesome, awesome graphics, joey. Btw, when will they make English versions of FE1-6 so i can play them? Guess I will end up buying the Wii, just so I can play the new Fire Emblem game… Only three awesome series- Zelda, Fire Emblem, and Golden Sun. WOOT!
ZeldaEmblemMaster - 07.20.06 4:50 pm
Oh, thought I ought specify, since few of you on this thread seem to be hardcore FE fans, like me, a Jeigen is a character that starts high level (usually classed up) but has crappy stats that ruin them later on. They also steal Exp from your weaker characters. Man, I love FE and Zelda. VIVA NINTENDO!
ZeldaEmblemMaster - 07.20.06 4:55 pm
I respect the Fire Emblem for many reasons…but the biggest ones are: they made GREAT games and they didn’t come out every 6 months like Megaman Battle Network. I loved that series until the 4th, 5th, etc. Fire Emblem has such a great story every time. I will, hands down, buy the one for the Wii.
The. Greatest. Series. Ever.
