Thanks to racketBoy I am now able to read for the very first time the first issue of Nintendo Power, available to download for free in PDF format.
I can still remember when this issue first came out. I would have just been starting the third grade and I could help but be fascinated with the infamous claymation representation of Mario and the Mushroom Kingdom.
The original Super Mario Bros was still filling our little elementary school minds and after flipping through this magazine, we were impressed yet fairly confused about this new Super Mario Bros 2 game. It seemed so different from the original game, but of course, Nintendo Power knew how to spin the remake of Doki Doki Panic into something we would all anticipate like nothing before.
In addition to the huge SMB2 preview, there is also a good walkthrough of Zelda and a ton of other Nintendo nostolgia to be found.
Enjoy Issue #1!

You totally beat me to it. I had this exact story in the queue waiting to be approved.

I never had this issue, but my cousins did. They were the ones who showed me the NES for the first time.

I want to see a scan of the Castelvania Cover.
Decapitated Dracula! I can remember seeing a 1cm x 1cm image of it in a recap-cover issue they did… for either #50 or #100. Can’t remember. But man… i’d love to see some oldschool Nintendo gore.

i really love some of the write ups for super mario bros 2. “don’t panic. you must have courage to persevere!” that kind of stuff.

Anyone remember “The Nintendo Fun Club”? It was a newsletter format printed on xerox paper (or newsprint) that pre-dated Nintendo Power.

Hey, whatever happened to ’scanning copyrighted material is bad’?
Sideath - 07.08.06 6:14 pm
Im pretty sure this counts as written abandonware

I still have this issue somewhere
Interesting fact — if you look in the highscore section you’ll find Cliff Bleszinski (”Cliffy B” of Epic/Jazz Jackrabbit/Unreal/Gears of War fame) in the Super Mario Bros section.

This was actually available at a billion other places before, albeit in torrent form. It’s kind of surprising how many old magazines have been scanned by people. It’s more work than I’d be willing to do lol

Hmmm… Anyone notice all of that personal information on page 89? That should have been blurred out…

Ahhh, memories. If only Nick wasn’t whoring my NP mags…

I had it once. I threw all my older issues away though. Man, having to wait bi-monthly for NP back then was hell. I subscribed all the way up until Donkey Kong Country 3 was released, and I didn’t even own a SNES through out that period until a month or so after I unsubscribed. However, it was still a treat to receieve it in the mail and then dig through looking at all the art on players pulse and looking at all the screen shots. One thing I remember doing is visiting the dentist and then staying an additional hour because they had a SNES there with alot of the big hits I’ve read about. Man, it was great. It was because of that very SNES that I was able to convince my mom to get me one. Nintendo had thier systems everywhere back then. Sad that you don’t see anything like that with the gamecube today. :\

I still have tons of NP and NFC magazines from when I was younger. I also managed to get some old Atari Age magazines from my older cousin. I’ve been waiting to do something like this but I never found anyone else interested. My copy of Issue #1 is free of creases unlike this PDF. I remember someone starting a wiki site to scan in old magazine but i dont think it ever took off. If anyone has any ideas, let me know…

Sweet, it’s still downloading, pretty fast thanks to my download manager.. But yeah, can’t wait to read this, I weren’t into a lot of the magazines, just about 2 or so back then.
krono6 - 07.09.06 7:10 pm
Somebody…please do more of these!
