Ubisoft announced today that Blue Byte studio is working on a DS version of “The Settlers”, a real time strategy game. Players will be able to conquer the world as the Romans, Vikings, Asians, and Nubians. Unfortunately, no plans to include a multiplayer mode have been announced yet.
Ralf Wirsing, director of the studio, says that the gameplay of the original Settlers translates well to the DS with its touch screen controls. Using the stylus, you can direct units, adjust your view of the map, and switch the top and bottom screen display.
Graphically, it looks a lot like Settlers II (PC), which was released in 1997. Expect to see Settlers DS released towards the end of 2006 in Asia and Europe. There are no current plans to publish the game in the US.
A few details on the game:
* The Settlers on the Nintendo DS will feature two campaigns, the Roman-campaign and the World-campaign. Of course, the game will also feature a free-play mode in which you can take on the CPU using every race available (Romans, Vikings, Nubians and Asians).
* 30 different jobs and 6 different types of soldiers will be available in the game.
* The game features 7 continents consisting out of different landtypes (forests, lava, ice, swamps)
* The game is controlled using the stylus
* The top and bottom screens can be swapped in-game. This way you can use your stylus to navigate using the map, or select and give order to your settlers. Using the stylus its also possible to zoom in on your settlers.

This will sell well in Germany. And Germany Alone.
Although I did enjoy Settlers II, I never really got into it. ¬_¬

I remember playing it alot, but I can’t remember how it played out.
I just know that the latest settlers was really different, like a normal RTS

Looks good! We need more PC conversions. Microprose has gotta get into the game. X-Com, Master of Magic, Master of Orion, Civilization…

And Jagged Alliance 2!
But wow, Settlers… I’m playing a lot more DS than PC games lately. After this one, nothing will pull me away (maybe the Wii).

I had this game way back in the day called Serfs (or was is Serf City?) for PC. This reminds me of that game totally. Never played any of the Settlers series, so I can’t compare, although I loved Serfs. Does anyone know of any correlation between the games?

um….
why aren’t they going to release in the US?
i’d buy that….

You can play as Romans, Vikings, or Asians? I guess that means some sort of generified blend of Chinese and Japanese.

Is this related to the Settlers of Catan board game or not?
And there’s also a great RTS game out for the DS, it’s called Age of Empire! ; )
babble - 07.07.06 12:08 pm
thrasher - Serf city is just another name for settlers, so its the same game you loved
I had settlers on my old amiga, man those were some good times. It even had nice split screen multiplayer but you had to have two mice!
babble - not related to settlers of catan, although I think that’s a german game as well (and they both are based on the same premise)
If this doesn’t come out in the US I’m definately importing this. I hope it’s more like settlers I and II and not like the dumbed down sequels.

Saluk: thanks, man, how very, very cool. The screens for the DS version struck me right away, it looks a lot like Serf City. I will definitely keep my eye on this game now.
thrAsher - 07.07.06 3:13 pm
GENIUS! Fantastic. Really looking forward to this. Finally, a halfway decent RTS for the DS!
Squirminator2k - 07.07.06 5:22 pm
Speaking of Amiga, and games that would be great with a stylus, wonder if we’ll ever see Populous revived as a DS game…. but this looks pretty good as well.
raindog - 07.07.06 9:56 pm
I’m only going to say this once, so listen up!…….
STARCRAFT DS.
Fat Mac - 07.08.06 12:32 pm
Saluk : I hope the same thing about the dumbed down aspect. After II the series wasn’t the same. Didn’t play any after that. In case you haven’t heard, they are coming out with a 10th anniversary edition. Only in europe though. But the demo is out. 90 minute time on it. EXACT same game. Much better graphics. I love it. I’ve played the demo a few times. But I can’t get a whole lot done in 90 minutes.
