Probably the most praised indie game ever is making it’s way to the Game Boy Advance… sort of. Thanks to the efforts of homebrew programmer RavenWorks, Cave Story will be ported to the GBA for use with emulators or on Flashcarts. And to make things even cooler, the project has the blessing of Cave Story’s original creator, Pixel.
RavenWorks will be keeping us informed of his progress on his LiveJournal blog. You can head over there now and check out the proof-of-concept rom that RavenWorks showed Pixel in order to get access to the game’s original source code. Can’t wait to see how this turns out and I can’t wait to play Cave Story on the go. If ever there was a game made for portability, this is it.
Also, while searching for images to use for this post I came across some nice Cave Story fanart. Check it out:

Some of those are images made by Pixel that you get at the end of the game, aren’t they?
Some of them are from here, I think: http://tinyurl.com/rc4ka

One of the best games ever made. Let’s hear it for continued support for Pixel and Cave Story!

Excellent news.

Oh my god. Awesome.
I never finished Cave Story because I hate playing games on my computer.
I really, really hope this actually gets finished.
Torankusu - 07.03.06 2:53 pm
Darn, you had me all excited thinking that some publisher had recognized the greatness that is Cave Story and given Pixel the large pile of cash he so deserves. Still, cool for those with flash carts.

Aw, bad ass o.o I got pretty far, but never finished it because i don’t have a USB controller, and it becomes rather difficult to control with a keyboard. But i saw Zork (goes by that moniker here on 4cr) beat it, and it was awesome.
Looking forward to playing this one on the DS.
Treasure Skunk - 07.03.06 3:23 pm
Oh good, now I’ll actually play it. I hope the whole game is easily ported to GBA.

holyfreakingmotherofpearl…..was what i said when i saw this (spaces not included)
Seriously, i just started this game 2 weeks ago, but sadly, exams got in the way, so it was put aside. Last week i rediscovered it, and after playing it for 5 hours straight, i beat both the bad and semi-good endings. Now, after coming back from a weekend at the cottage, (where i actually dreamed of play Cave Story on a portable, no joke) i see this. Thank you, for making my july.
Lil_fighter - 07.03.06 4:12 pm
Yeah, Fan Art 05 isn’t fan art. It was drawn by Pixel himself, and I believe it is a part of one of the game’s endings.

is this the same thing as crystal caverns? That was an old Apogee game, and It was my childhood.
Buttonbasher - 07.03.06 4:22 pm
YES YES YES!!! MY DREAMS CAME TRUE!!!

There’s also a more recent sound-test ROM Ravenworks developed to test porting of the sound code:

nintendo should just throw some money at this guy and make him a one man second party development house. this game is proof that video games can have a simple/yet elegant story that touches you when you least expect it.
lawrence - 07.03.06 6:20 pm
^^^ Exactly. Nintendo needs to recruit this guy as his style seem to fit better with Nintendo than $ony. Seriously, this should be coming out for the GBA and not for the friggin Psp. I don’t think PSP fans, or even Sony fans in general, are banging any doors down to play side scrolling games like this.
Us Nintendo fans, on the other hand, obviously dig this kinda stuff.
bubble - 07.03.06 6:33 pm
uh, dude above me, it is coming out for the GBA, not the PSP.
and with that, ill return to my Cave Story goodness
Lil_fighter - 07.03.06 6:39 pm
Lil_Fighter, there’s a commercial Cave Story remake in the works, which is probably what Bubble was refering to.
Conn - 07.03.06 6:56 pm
It is not entirely clear that the commercial psp version is legit; the company behind it appears quite shady.

OMFG.
Joey - 07.03.06 8:09 pm
i would love to see this game on the Virtual Console, Do you think there is any chance?
Jose - 07.03.06 9:27 pm
AWESOME
TakaM - 07.03.06 10:38 pm
JOSE- its likely
THe GBA port looks promising..

I hope enough people download it that someone decides to do a DS version. It could be identical to the GBA version for all I care, but Cave Story is one of those games that I would need to use the DS sleep function with.
Or someone could do a GBA “emulator” for the DS that supports the sleep function, but I would think if it could be done, someone would already have done it.
raindog - 07.04.06 4:26 pm
#4 is the only one that’s not totally awesome.
ellipsis - 07.05.06 12:47 am
A DS version would actually be a realy good idea (if they can get the colors right on the DS lite). The bottom screen could be used for the map and item selection, and the higher resolution would probably work better for some of the giant boss fights. The last boss is going to be hard to squeeze in on the gba.
Joey - 07.05.06 11:46 am
I can’t see playing this game without the keyboard. After a while I just developed a technique I find difficult to do without.
When the company releasing Cave Story for the psp contacted Nintendo about a DS version, Nintendo declined. In addition to that, Pixel wouldn’t give up his source to him. The fact that this GBA homebrew dev was granted the source is a huge accomplishment and speaks for itself.

cave story, while one of the best games i have ever played, is probably the SECOND most praised indie game. alien hominid is #1. also, there are a dozen doujin shooters that are highly regarded and known in the west a bit. rRootage ‘n’ company?

Hello! I wish to thank authors for this site, it was pleasant to me! I hope that the project will develop only. With the best regards, Samanta.
