Hori has long been recognized as the crème de la crème of screen protector manufacturers, the standard by which all other screen protectors must attempt to live up to, though they will inevitably fail. Whether you’re looking to guard the screens of your original Nintendo DS or your DS lite, Hori is the way to go. The attention to quality, affordable price, and ease of application all come together to form one giant Voltron of awesomeness.
Unfortunately, most retail shops like GameStop and Best Buy insist on carrying less-than satisfactory screen protectors, cruel parodies of Hori’s product. Those hoping to fetch a Hori screen protector usually have to buy online from either an import site or eBay. According to recent findings however, bootleg screen protectors are just as widespread on eBay as pirated GBA carts!
Early reports claim that these counterfeit screen protectors scratch very easily compared to the authentic ones. Adding further insult, the fake protectors will have a slightly brown tint, sullying the vibrant colors of your DS lite. Much like with bootlegged GBA/DS carts, there are also packaging inconsistencies you can keep an eye out for to ensure that these phony protectors never touch your DS’ screens.

Much thanks to jlo mein from the GBATemp forums for his photos and notes.

Blurry package art - The difference between the two images in this photo is not due to the camera. The actual artwork is blurry and slightly faded on the bootleg product. Hori’s artwork is crispy like KFC chicken.

Resealable bag - The bags that house the authentic screen guards should not be resealable. The bags should not have any text on them either.

Cheap microfiber cloth with a stamped Hori pattern - Hori’s straight-edged cloth feels softer and has no design or writing on it.

White tabs on the corners with Engrish writing - The real deal has centered yellow tabs with only Japanese characters printed on them.
If you have any corrections to the above tips or possible abnormalities you’d like to add, please let us know. We want to make sure that our readers aren’t duped. While it is likely that a few sellers on eBay are selling actual Hori screen protectors, we cannot at this time suggest eBay as a reliable source for this particular product. We advise you to instead buy these protectors from a trustworthy import site, such as the ones we have listed below.

Yikes! Now I have to watch for fake screen protectors? Man, this stinks… I hate eBay oh-so much and then again I love it with a passion. Oh well, just gotta keep an eye out.

I’ve used both Hori and Pelican screen protectors, and they are both great.
If you apply them properly and with care, they do what was intended of them. The tricky part is applying them if you have never done so.
Regarding my experience with the Pelican brand…
I used the Pelican screen protectors for my original DS for 1.5+ years and when I finally traded it in for a Lite, I removed the screen protector the touchscreen was in mint condition, no scratches or anything (1.5+ years of nearly everyday use). I was so impressed I bought the new Pelican screen protectors for the Lite and this time around they fit even better (covering 99% of the screen, leaving barely any edges showing).
In addition it has a 3 year warranty so if you mess it up you can send them back to Pelican and they will replace them. Their customer service is excellent by the way. Case in point, I had bought the Write and Protect Pack for my original DS; came with styluses which were poor quality and didn’t really fit into the DS stylus compartment. I wrote Pelican and sent them in, requesting for the newly released Pelican metal styluses. Before I knew it they had sent me the new metal ones as replacements!).
In short, the Pelican screen protectors (Original/Lite versions), aren’t as bad as some people say. As I said above, if you apply them correctly one shouldn’t experience any troubles with the quality or its durability.

I also have Pelican’s screen protector for the DS lite and they are great
The only problem is that they cost 10$ CAD …

wow that sucks for whoever buys that crud, I remember buying some yugioh counterifeit cards years ago on ebay
Linkthelegend2 - 06.28.06 3:46 pm
I bought a Hori comfortable stylus once.
It’s now broken and discontinued.
It was the best DS stylus ever, its’ always best just to add a few Hori items when shopping from play-asia.

Oh man, that mustache fools me every time.

Wait, so are these Counterfeit Screen Protectors have the name of Hori on them? That is illegal! Hori should sue the people counterfeiting these; they have soiled the good name of Hori!

megatron:
Yeah, those are the US HORI screen filters.

Im my experience decalgirl is reliable but does have an ebay store so buy at your own risk.

My wife uses a Pelican on the bottom screen of her Lite, and it actually is fine. No air bubbles whatsoever. Don’t like the idea of the adhesive, but I guess it’s no biggie.
I, on the other hand, pawned some protective LCD film off a guy in the camera department of a department store in Seoul
It stays on great without any adhesive, which is cool. Air bubbles are tough to get out, but it’s okay overall.

screw screen protectors…I bought my DS at costco, so if something is wrong with it I can return it and get a new one.

Oh great!!!!
Can’t trust asians (I’m asian)
werdnawee - 06.29.06 12:51 am
Wonderful!!!
I eBayed 3 of them and they have the fake HORI cloth.
Interestingly, my friend eBayed also. He has the Play-asia cloth but had WHITE tabs on the protectors. Not the YELLOW ones.
So are these real or fake??
werdnawee - 06.29.06 12:53 am
I wouldn’t worry about the white/yellow cloth… As long as the writing on the tabs is in Japanese only, they should be fine. Try ncsx.com… They’re good and not over priced.
Oh yeah and the Hori screen protectors are f’n sweet. It says on the packaging (in Japanese) that it’s the same film that is used to protect plasma screens…
dj - 06.29.06 2:38 am
I buy from Renchi.com as well and they have a ton of Hori stuff, as far as I know, the pouch and the cloth and the LCD protector are all real, I don’t have the yellow tab though but certainly not the cheap packaging, like those on eBay…

I got two hori screen protectors off of ebay. One set was legit, the other was fake. I cut the real ones for my digital camera, and put the fakes on the DS. The fakes at least did not use an adhesive, and they’re nearly as clear. The catch? They’re scratching really quickly and I’m only Brain Aging so far (other games in the mail… from reputable businesses).
So, I’d actually recommend getting the super cheap fakes on ebay if you want to put them on your razr or camera, but not a PDA or DS.
dongle - 06.29.06 11:36 pm
Is it just my imagination, or is the DS lite touch screen better quality? I don’t fell like it could be easily scratched, and I can even see the little dots that sense the touching. Screw Hori- If it starts to scratch I’m getting the Boxwave Clear Touch like I did with the phat DS.

I just bought ‘Hori’ screen protectors off a local auction site (New Zealand’s version of Ebay) I recieved them today, googled Hori screen protectors on a whim, and came across this article. I discovered mine are FAKE! Needless to say, I’m so mad.
johanna - 07.03.06 2:27 am
I just received mine off eBay (I ordered them before I read this)-
- The packaging looks nice and sharp, there doesn’t seem to be anything wrong with it,
- The microfibre cloth doesn’t have straight edges, but it doesn’t have HORI stamped on it,
-The stickers are white English ones,
-They aren’t brown tinted at all.
I might these are just another type of fakes, but will anything bad really come from using them? I could always remove them and buy the real ones later, right?
Jack - 07.03.06 12:56 pm
So I did come across this article the day after I bought mine on ebay. Just got it today and looks like I did get the counterfeit ones. I guess I’ll try it anyway? Maybe better than the Pelican ones ?
Jason - 07.07.06 2:07 pm
Well, it seems I got some fake protectors from Ebay too. I got the resealable bag, white english papers and rugged cloth with hori on it.
I put it on my DS anyway, so far it doesn’t seem that bad. Let’s hope it stays that way
At least it doesn’t seem to have a brown tint to it.
Brian - 07.11.06 10:54 am
could anybody who got fakes off of ebay please post the names of the sellers they purchased from to help prevent this from happening to other people?

The newer stock of Hori adds english to the labels.
The packaging is also resealable, though the Hori bags don’t include text.
