The Mother series isn’t really marked in the world due to its rapid-fire game release regiment; on the contrary, most people know it from its incredibly skilled and near fanatical fan base.
Mother 3 fans have once again shown us just how powerful that reputation can be. Using the popular 3D Modeling tool, Maya, one brave Japanese guy has done the daring, and fully rendered what he thought a 3D Mother 3 would look like.
What I really find most impressive about the whole affair is the appropriate use of the ‘Celda-type’ cell shading on the characters. Not only does it really fit with Mother’s style of silly, heartrending colors, but it’s also retains the true color style between the two games.
Fake stuff, but A-Plusses all around. Check out the official Mother 3 page (translated by Starman.net) to see the GBA game for comparison.

I have to fix my ceiling - I didn’t read the ‘Fan Mockup’ part of the headline.

Also, the face on the girl almost looks directly lifted from WW Link. As does the color pallette.
Needs more originality.
Mother 3 deserves its own style!

People didn’t like the original character designs by Benimaru Itoi (N64). I’ll admit some designs in the GBA game were better. Like Duster, Lighter and the Dragosaurus creatures.
I suppose the Celda style should be it’s own (although to be fair some of the Mother character designs look well suited to it).
Even after finishing Mother 3, the memory of the original N64DD version continues to haunt me.

Impressive, but far too Wind Wakery for my tastes.
There’s something about ‘clean’ cel-shading which makes environments totally uninteresting for me. I think it’s probably the lack of detailing, with the designers putting heavier focus on characters, rather than fleshing out environments.
Not that that’s a bad thing, but I’d rather walk through a detailed, interesting looking forest than a simple representation of a forest - i.e. a flat green texture and a flat brown texture.

Honestly, I think this is far more fitting for Earthbound than it ever was Zelda.
I thought Itoi said he was done with the series anyway. Nintendo seems to have no real interest in doing anything with it without him. I guess we’ll see. I just hope that Nintendo UK magazine was right about Mother 3.

Plus, I have to commend anyone who can plop out something that cool in Maya in their freetime. That program is just overwhelming with all its shelves, boxes and whatever else.

It’s cool, but, I disagree–I don’t think it fits Mother 3 at all. As crazy as the series is, I think a realistic look would fit a 3D Mother 3 better.

Might want to fix the title - the mock-up is for the Gamecube, not the Wii

Have we seriously played the same games or looked at the same images of Mother 3? I’m kind of just flabbergasted by that lol.
I suppose a realistic style could work if they chose it, but it certainly doesn’t embody or fit into what the series has really done so far.
