Awhile ago Marvel announced that an Iron Man movie was in the works for 2008. They also announced that Jon Favreau would helm the project.
Yesterday I finished up the recent six part comic series called Iron Man: Extremis. It’s a great read from Warren Ellis and Adi Granov that brings Iron Man back to his roots and puts him in a modern world at the same time.
This got me thinking about the impending movie and whether it will be any good. In my search to dig up more details I discovered that Jon Favreau has started a MySpace page dedicated to the movie. Even more exciting is the fact that he is personally answering questions about the movie.
So far things sound incredibly promising! Jon says the movie will focus on Tony Stark as a weapons manufacturer and deal with socio-politcal elements stemming out of Afghanistan. The story will be somewhere between Spider-Man and Batman Begins in tone, but set in a more realistic world. It will also be a linear orgin story dealing with Stark as a gadget crazy, hard-working philathopist.
Jon is a big fan of Adi Granov’s armor design from the Extremis comic and plans to model the movie version after that. The armor will be CG for the most part, although they are still figuring out ways to get across Tony Stark’s emotion while in the suit. There will also be lots of flying and fighting in the movie!
All in all, I’m extremely excited. The thought of a Iron Man movie gave me nightmares of a Daredevil or Punisher quality flick at first, but after reading up on it and seeing where Favreau is heading with the movie, I’m very optimistic. Head on over to the MySpace group and read up about it and also check out the links below for Adi Granov’s page to see the style of the armor design and read the Wikipedia entry to get caught up on your Iron Man history.

I believe Favreau also mentioned that IM will have more than one armor appearing… that is, we will see an evolution of the armor in the movie.

Yeah, he did! Im guessing we will see the orginal bulky armor and then a more modern version. He also mentioned that the armor will be Tony’s life support for his failed heart, but that the armor will act up and cause some problems. Sounds great!

Movies based on comics I’d rather see:
The Walking Dead
Y - The Last Man
Scott Pilgrim
Sharknife
Channel Zero
Nil: A Land Beyond Belief
Powers
Pyongyang
Fillerbunny

You do know a Scott Pilgrim movie has been optioned, right? Right? How cool is that?!
I would love to see Y - The Last Man and Powers get the movie treatment… but I’d also be very afraid. Those are very dense, very intelligent books that might very well get lost in translation.

“Q:19. Is there any film that you’d like to remake? There are so many cool ones coming out like Posedion, Clash of the Titans, etc…
A:Must Love Dogs.”
I can’t quite remember what he’s done that I really like, but I am pretty sure that I love Jon Favreau.
Hmm, when am I going to get my Deadpool movie?

He’s using Robocop, The Rocketeer, and Batman Begins as reference points?
Hero. Absolute fecking hero.
Tetsuo - 06.08.06 7:02 am
Oh, and you know who’s directing Scott Pilgrim?
Edgar Wright.
Director of Shaun of the Dead. w00t.
Tetsuo - 06.08.06 7:08 am
:D Yes! Iron Man one of my 74389893 million favorite super heroes.

Looks like I’m going to have to get Extremis. The only thing I remember about Iron Man is that I thought he was awesome when I was 8. Is that an official movie pic up top?

And I just answered my own question. That Adi Granov art collection is amazing. Definitely getting Extremis.

Ironman has a lot of potentiel for a movie, IMO Favreau is not a perfect choice for the job , but who knows may be it turns out ok, …hopefully.

Yeah, I agree that Favreau is an odd choice… but he seems to be headed in the right direction. He is typically known for his comedy, but he seems to want to make this an adult’s super hero movie focusing on more real world events.
He also directed Zathura, which I’ve yet to see, but I heard it had great special effects and a pretty good storyline.

Adi Granov is amazing. Jon Favreau, via MySpace, seems really into keeping the project genuine so I don’t think this will disappoint.
Ghost Rider, on the other hand…

OMG
Is there something in the water up in Hollywood since the year 2000?
All of a sudden there’s been an increase in comic book/superhero movies. Just to name a few, Spiderman series, Superman, X-men seies, Hulk, Batman, Punisher, etc etc.
Can’t there be at least a little gap between these genres?
Marc - 06.08.06 5:03 pm
^I’m not complaining, i just don’t like so many at one time.
However, this is great for games!

“Is there something in the water up in Hollywood since the year 2000?”
Yes its called the box office receipts for spiderman (among a few other hugely profitable adaptations). Everyone is cashing in on a popular genre. I remember when tombstone came out the same thing happened again with historical westerns. This is always the way it goes.
Anyway, this may be off topic but whenever I think about Iron Man, (keep in mind I was a big spidey buff back in the day) I remember a book or series called something like Spiderman 2020 or Ironman 2020. Anyway, the storyline was something where Iron Man (from the future) comes back in time to kill some villain when they are still a child to prevent a tragedy they would cause later. It just so happened that spidey sees Iron Man trying to kill an “innocent” kid and of course he steps in. And boy does he give an ass whooping to ‘ol iron man. Thats one of the best comics I ever read. So if you see it pick it up.
Finally, I can’t wait to see an Iron Man movie. I really like the whole tony starks human weakness juxtaposed to the incredible power of Iron Man. Very heady stuff if you don’t mind comic books being called “heady”.

Hmm, I like Jon Favreau as an actor, but not as a director. Also, I LOVE Iron Man, so I’m rooting for this movie to do well.
