4cr Presents: The DS lite Buyer’s Guide

While early-importers and those lucky enough to find a retailer breaking street date already have their hands on a Nintendo DS lite, most are stuck waiting a few more days for the system’s official launch.

To ease the pain, we’ve put together for you a small collection of DS lite articles in a convenient and stylish buyer’s guide. The publication includes thirteen pages of useful information like hardware improvements for the updated handheld, and games/accessories to consider with a DS lite purchase.

The PDF version has a handy links page in the back for the products we talked about. The Flash version lacks this page, but is slick and something we wanted to try out. This is our first try at anything like this, so let us know what you think!

weird. Mario Kart doesn’t make it as one of the top 7 games to get? I plan it to be the second one I get.

N/A

It looks neater? I like the hip-hop influence near the middle, funny stuff.

Maybe you guys can help me with this… I still haven’t gotten an answer. When using headphones and low volume, the original DS always put out this ringing noise in the background that was incredibly annoying. I’ve noticed this on several DS’s, so I know it’s not just mine.

Has this been fixed on the Lite?

Your guide is useful and the overall design is great !

I didn’t know about flashpaper before reading your guide, and it’s a nice way to present articles. Much quicker and a lot crispier than PDF… :)

I just want to give a fat kudos for the work you guys put into that. Really well done, 4CR has always been known for quality, you guys never let me down. I usually am pretty snobby when it comes to all things visual too.

Somebody, or group of somebodies, is thinking design portfolio or advertisers it seems. It does look like the Escapist, which isn’t a bad thing at all, and I’d love to see individual games given this treatment – “experience reviews” with style.

I’ve actually never seen Flash Paper, but it worked well and I’ll avoid launching Adobe Reader or Mac Preview to view a document any time.

Nice work.

Your server is beginning to get lagged, I would digg it but I’m baneed from digg for flaming stupid video/origami/OMG NINTENDO HEADPHONES posts.

It’s very iPod lounge-esque of you 4cr, but I must admit, it’s a quality publication- i’m sure it will bring lots of potential Nintendorks to your site and join the fun.

Hahaha my rumble pak brings all the guys to the yard.
50 cent has 50 custom made DS units, he loves it apparently- as does Marilyn Manson and Jack Black, the DS is the system of choice for playing on tour/filming it seems.

I have to say, it’s very professional- while I feel Mario Kart should have been there over say Animal Crossing you’ve done a good job, it’s extremely well produced and quite amusing in places- perhaps a little too much emphasis on accesories, I don’t think people ‘need’ them as much as companies who sell them make out.

But it’s informative I guess and the adverts are very tasteful! Over and out.

N/A

raindog on June 6, 2006 at 10:19 pm

Is this some new trend, to put up “magazines” in static, web-unfriendly print-only format and then use a page size that doesn’t correspond to any paper known to man? Is this the next incarnation of the hyper-l33t floppy disk “zines” from the days of the Amiga and ST?

Come on, guys, you could have done every bit of your funny layout tricks using CSS and some graphics, it probably would have been smaller than the PDF or SWF anyway, and I wouldn’t have to squint to see your retarded Futura font.

N/A

mitch on June 6, 2006 at 10:50 pm

Buh?

How is Flash web-unfriendly?

N/A

raindog on June 6, 2006 at 11:08 pm

Flash is for applications and pretty graphics, not the presentation of articles. PDF is for printing. Both are ill-suited for traditional web content. You can’t override them with high-visibility fonts, disable annoying style sheets or just scroll through the document from top to bottom, reading comfortably.

But I think a picture is worth a thousand words.

N/A

adam on June 6, 2006 at 11:52 pm

Very nice work on the content. That’s the first time I’ve seen Flash Paper and it worked great. Nice layout and design sense too.
But oh wait, RAINDOG the all knowing aparently thinks it would have been far easier to code the entire thing in CSS, which would be oh so much easier. So maybe you shouldn’t do this anymore. (completely soaked in sarcasm)
I would say you should print a mag, but it would probably be much more cost effective to do this type of thing.

Oh god, watch me post a screen cap of the article working on my own website. Or not.

N/A

xtracool on June 7, 2006 at 1:16 am

N/A

mitch on June 7, 2006 at 1:28 pm

Sure. Rumor is, EBGames (or is it GameStop?) is working with a trade-in deal for your original fatty DS. You’ll apparently snag about $50 or $60 towards your DS Lite, which is a pretty good deal if you mean to grab money ASAP!

I kinda dislike that rapper part in the middle. I mean, Tupac has been dead for like 9-10 years now. You wanna paste Kanye in there, thats cool, but Pac’s image in there makes as much sense as a pic of Kurt Cobain to show how “grungy” your old DS is.

raindog on June 7, 2006 at 10:05 pm

Actually, Adam, the screengrab was of the Flash Paper version, not some CSS mockup I did. I posted it to demonstrate an especially sucky feature of Flash Paper…. you have to scroll up and down to read each individual column of each article. You also have two scrollbars, and you have to scroll the outside scrollbar down to get to the bottom of the inside scrollbar.

Also, it definitely would not have been easier to create that magazine using HTML and CSS…. and they wouldn’t have been able to finish it up in Photoshop CS. But it would have been possible, and it might even have been done right.

Seriously, I understand the need to embrace your inner magazine publisher. Been there, done that. But we have this thing called the web now, and it really works better when you don’t try to force it to look like a 9×5″ slick.

There is no hate here.

Bazackly! Yeah, the lite has better backlight and all, but my Phat works just fine, except for the little inconvenience that I can’t use my new fancy encryption system. Also, even though everyone whines about the Phat’s strange placement of the power and Start/Select buttons, I like them there. Nice and thumb-accesible.

It was nice layout wise, but the top 7 games is a bit off.

You put Pheonix Wright on there (which is impossible to find outside of ebay and the last few remaining copies at game stores), and left off Trauma Center, one of the highest rated DS games out there, not to mention one of the most innovative when it comes to using the touch screen and stylus. I mean, come on, the series is even getting a Wii sequel on launch, give it more props than a rare point and click adventure game! (as good as it was, Trauma Center is way more of a “must have”).
