Plok was one of the last games I bought for my SNES. The little limbless hero with the hangman’s hood was a fun muse to guide around a crazy world that almost looked like it was made of clay. My brother and I enjoyed it, although I don’t think we every got that far in it. In fact, despite it’s cute look, the game was actually very hard.
Unfortunately for the developers of Plok (who have been able to thrive in the years since) the game arrived at a time when everyone and their grandma was putting out a platformer with a cute-but-cool lead character. Because of this many people never got to play this charmingly bizarre adventure.
Now the creators and owners of Plok have opened an archive for the little limbless guy. Head on over there to read up on the story of the game and see some of the concept artwork. Also, I found a (emulator assisted) speed run of the game on YouTube. Unless you get a rom of this game you will probably have a hard time finding it, so this video might be the only way to see all the game has to offer.

Man, was that game ever great.

This is why I miss the 2D era.

Seriously this was one of the best damn 2d platformers on the SNES. It was just so left field. I would love to see a new version of it made for the DS or at least a port to the GBA. Who made it btw?
Also here is a very very good Plok site I’ve found on the net, as the name sezs, I think its the only site completely devoted to Plok

Weird. I didn’t know of anyone else who liked this game until now.

ah yes, I love this game as well.
hey, has anyone heard of/played a SNES title called “Super Puddy”? It’s like this, but more creative and had much better music.
It was one of my favorite games as a kid, I’d love to hear who else has played it, or if there are any fan sites out there. (I’ve not found any…)

I can’t imagine how anyone could have beaten this game without an emulator. Those last levels in the Flea Pit were freaking insane.

Plok! I named a pet algae eater after this guy!
What a fun/insanely difficult platformer. The B/W levels were très cool.
@Wilford: I think the game was called “Super Putty”, maybe. Theres a few blob games and I get them mixed up sometimes. In Supper Putty you were a blob that could stretch up and down levels (very grossly) and punch and stuff, but it was less of a platformer than Plok. I’m wondering if you’re maybe thinking of Smartball, which was a fantastic platformer on SNES. I have the first level music stuck in my head now just mentioning it

Very cool to note, that the same company that made Plok also made Tinstar for Nintendo on SNES. That was a crazy fun game, but play it on an emulator with the mouse to make it a little more fair
Also, I found a link for Smartball screenshots, but it’s unfortunately also a ROM link :\
Here it is anyway:

Uhhgghh…Nick. Besides the opening harmonica…we both thought the game sucked.
Ahhh Nostalgia makes crap memorable.

The Pickford Brothers are still making good games. Check out their new one, Naked War (http://www.zee-3.com/pickfordbros/games/nakedwar.php), a great turn-based strategy game.

Now that I watched the speed run…ok we just sucked horribly at that game.

Heh, I encountered Plok through emulation a while ago and found it highly delectible.

@Joey: Nope, I know for a fact that it was super PUTTY (yes, that’s the correct spelling…) because from the little bit I played of smartball, I hated it. No, super putty was a great platform with some of the best videogame music I’ve ever heard. I have an mp3 for every level of the game (that I made myself), along with a few polk mp3’s. But yeah, superputty was about as obscure a game as you could get, but I loved it. (Btw, putty’s streching was not gross! it would be like pulling a piece of silly putty 2 directions, and you could move super fast with it. He also turned into a puddle and could make a boxing glove out of himself. lofl)
Wilford Brimley - 06.02.06 3:08 pm
Yeah, it’s Super Putty. It’s based upon a game called Putty for the Amiga. It’s generally agreed to be a very solid game, by those who have bothered to play it.
