A little later than expected due to Memorial Day festivities, but the podcast is here. The Nick and Nick show is back with the news and then I confess my love for everything Scott Pilgrim in this weeks Lightbox.
And in the roundtable the guys try to figure out what the final Wii feature(s) will be. Sandwich maker anyone? Finally, a classic Abbot and Costello joke for all you baseball fans out there. Enjoy!
Also, send us some voicemails! The voicemailbox was very lonely this week!

The idea of rechargeable batteries is retarded for the Wiimote, a big flaw of the 360 controller is the battery life is so poor the lazy gamers at Joystiq don’t bother taking the charge cables out.
By using power packs you will be required to either be tethered to a power socket at the wall or not be able to play at all while the Wiimote is in a docking station.
The docking station is not going to be a cheap accesory, Nintendo want to lower the prices.. so we’d probably get something like the 360 play and charge cable.
Next this is a kids system, hot swapping power packs is not going to be as friendly as just AA batteries could be. Every house in the country has AA batteries and they’re pretty cheap rechargeables.
High powered AA batteries such as Uniross Ni-Mh batteries which are intended for CD players and digital camera flashes would be sufficient for the Wiimote.
Instead of just having 1 power pack in the Wiimote you could have 2 AA batteries in the controller, and 2 AA batteries in the charger plugged in the wall. This means you’ll never have to wait to charge, you wont have to pay for a dock, you wont ever be tethered to anything and you wont die mid game.
There is technology out there for the Wii to detect signal strength, lets say you’re on Nintendo WiFi and your battery has an hour left, an on screen logo would appear or an LED on the controller indicates you need to switch.
Next time you’re in the lobby for Smash Bros. you walk over to the plug socket and swap the batteries.
Much more convenient.
Personally I think the idea of the controller having 512mb on board is perfect- it needs to be done, Nintendo has talked about the Wiimote being a personal device like the DS- and everyone in the house will have their own customized remote.
By having it as a memory card is genius.

Nick, I’m trusting your recommendations again (even though you don’t reply to my emails
).
*Buys 3 Scott Pilgrim trade paperbacks at inflated European prices*
duncan - 05.29.06 2:58 pm
I was at the Scott Pilgrim #3 launch party this weekend! Woo!
amanaplan - 05.29.06 4:38 pm

‘Who?’
‘Yes.’
As For The ‘Final Secret’, I Think It’s The No-Secret Mic..
It Could Work, I Mean, You Don’t Always Have To Put Your Face Right Into The DS’s Mic To Use It, You Can Do It At Arm’s Lenght.. granted, If You’re In A Quiet Place..
oh no, Another Comic I Should Look Out For.. A Shame I Didn’t Pick Up Scott Pilgrim On Free Comic Book Day.. then again, I Didn’t See It There..
wow, I Went Backwards..
Nymo - 05.29.06 4:59 pm
They should have an extra BIG button on the face of the controller named “FOOD”. Think about it, you can set it to a food place to order anything you want, without disturbing your game! It can be set to Pizza, Subway, or even Sandwiches
Krono6 - 05.29.06 5:07 pm
I’m still hoping it’s the cupholder that attaches to the expansion port.
duncan - 05.29.06 5:14 pm
I have to disagree about a
amanaplan - 05.29.06 5:35 pm
whoops. Don’t know what happened there, but my point was that selling at $150 (or in that area) isn’t a crazy idea. If $199 would be a great price and undercut all the competition, $150 would be even better and erase any last hesitations those who can’t justify $200 gaming purchases (also known as non-gamers) may have.

And Scott Pilgrim’s band name is Sex Bob-Omb, not Sex Bomb.
amanaplan - 05.29.06 5:45 pm
Good Podcast. I don’t know about the final secrete, did Nintendo even announce any? Fact is I think you guys were right when you said Nintendo couldn’t cram any more into the controller. Don’t expect anything big; you don’t want to end up thinking Nintendo are going to have iPod connection with built in memory and Mic into the Wii-mote, then find the secrete is just DS/ Wii connectivity.
TK-Linx - 05.29.06 6:10 pm
Wasn’t it already confirmed (or at least spoken about in an interview) that the wiimote will remember personal details, as they hope everyone in the house to have their own controller?
As for have an actual flash drive in there, that may weigh it down, though most USB drives aren’t heavy at all.. still it seems implausible to me.
duncan - 05.29.06 6:14 pm
Just saying, the other day I went into EBX, and the guy working, quite overzealously after hearing my friend ask me “when the lite is coming out, anyway?” interrupted my “I think the 11th or 12th?” with “ON THE ELEVENTH! you HAVE to preorder it now or YOU WILL NOT GET ONE, and we have a really good deal where you get to buy a game with the system, with your preorder, and then you get a bundle pack with it.”.
Apparently, you buy a game, they take the payment for the game as a down payment, even though afterall they include the price of the game in the bundle, but then you get some accesory pack too. So, I don’t know if he was right, but if so, euugh, they’re still trying to push it.
TOMATO - 05.29.06 6:24 pm
Scott Pilgrim Sounds very similar to GTO (live action, I’ve never seen the anime). But IMO Scott Pilgrim dosn’t sound as good as GTO.
Maybe I’m just a GTO fanboy
NPC - 05.29.06 6:51 pm
Great podcast. This is the first time I listen to the whole thing. Good stuff.
Dym - 05.29.06 7:29 pm
AMANAPLAN: I was at the launch party to.
NPC: Scott Pilgrim is NOTHING like GTO.
Jacob - 05.29.06 8:28 pm
nice podcast guys
TakaM - 05.29.06 9:00 pm
My guess for the final Wii feature?
Yes, DS connectivity.
BUT
You will be able to download those retro games not only onto the Wii, but ONTO THE DS AS WELL.
Hey, a boy can dream, right?
ZB - 05.30.06 12:26 am
Great Podcast
I would just like to make one minor correction though, for future reference: I’s that appear in transliterations of Japanese is pronounced more like a hard E, so the pronunciation of Iwata’s name is closer to E-wata, rather than the hard I sound that you used.
GweenMeanie - 05.30.06 2:35 am
ZB, has that not been confirmed yet?
if not I’d put money on being able to download DS demos via the wii and other uses similar to GCN and GBA
TakaM - 05.30.06 4:50 am
“And Scott Pilgrim’s band name is Sex Bob-Omb, not Sex Bomb.”
DOH! Amanaplan, you are totally right. I screwed that one up. See, even more great video game references!
Nick - 05.30.06 8:18 am
Jacob - Are you the guy who tripped and fell in the middle of the room? Because that was funny.
amanaplan - 05.30.06 8:52 am
TAKAM, I don’t think I’ve heard anything about transferring downloaded games from the Wii to the DS (and I certainly could have missed that), but if I can play any NES or SNES game I want, anyWHERE I want, well, ’nuff said.
ZB - 05.30.06 9:09 am
The Clash at Demonheads for the win.
Joey - 05.30.06 9:37 am
AMANAPLAN: Nope, I didn’t make ny sort of spectacle of myself.
Jacob - 05.30.06 10:35 am
The Boys! And Crash! for the win. They don’t even need instruments!
amanaplan - 05.30.06 2:22 pm
Getting the virtual console stuff onto your DS would be quite cool. Nintendo mentioned that indie devs could put their games on VC to test them, if they could do the same on the DS I would think you’d see a big rise in new software. That or they could make another virtual console type of thing just for the DS. I’m just waiting until I can get some of those PDA-like homebrew apps without actually having to run homebrew.
