August 29 will mark the most anticipated DVD release of all time, The Wizard–a 1989 film starring Fred Savage, the Power Glove, and a pre-release Super Mario Bros. 3.
In this campy comedy, the young Fred Savage sneaks his emotionally disturbed younger half-brother Jimmy out of the home he has been placed in, and sets off on a trip across the country. Along the way they team up with young Haley, another runaway, and together they discover that the silent Jimmy has a gift for playing video games.
50,000! You scored 50,000 points on Double Dragon?
With this newfound information, the trio sets off for a video game competition in California, pursued by a bounty hunter and some concerned relatives.
I can’t wait to watch this on the Wii.

Best news ever. It would be so cool if it had special features, but I think the most important feature is just that I get to watch it again.

This is kinda funny - I’ve been looking around for a place to import the “Joy Stick Heroes” these last few days - the only release of it on DVD (budget title in Germany). Guess I won’t have to be looking anymore =)

It’s like Rainman for kids!

Now all we need is for the Mario Bros Movie to come out on DVD and life shall be complete.
flamecondor - 05.24.06 3:02 am
I unfortunately saw that back in the early 90s. It was a grave mistake.
Belgand - 05.24.06 3:32 am
Mario Bros movie is already out on DVD. I already have it.
Check Amazon.com

Oh man… along with Monster Squad and Little Monsters, this is my favorite movie as a kid. I saw a bootleg copy on dvd at a con once, but passed on it, and regreted it ever since.
This just made my week!

I find it hard to believe that this ISN’T on DVD yet. I was actually just looking for this movie yesterday, to order via Blockbuster Online, but (obviously) it wasn’t there. This movie is probably good only for nostalgia, but it’s still The Wizard!
Dean - 05.24.06 10:37 am
haha that’s awesome… I actually found this on VHS last summer at a library book sale for 50 cents

I’m sure there is a better place in the forums for this, but this was the best place on the front page I could think of to post this I found: http://ssbbnintendo64.ytmnd.com/

About time!
I’ve been waiting for a DVD release of this…
SereneCrimson - 05.24.06 2:11 pm
I knew this movie was garbage as soon as I saw it, even as a wii-little five year old. But, you know, I really can’t help but like it… It’s so bad (lolz).
omg.kittens - 05.24.06 2:34 pm
I remember that the inept father that couldn’t play video games made it further than me in Ninja Turtles
Krumb - 05.24.06 3:34 pm
This is so wizard

We can finally waste our money on Nintendo commercials! Yay!

YESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYES!!!
I was contemplating how I could possibly ever get my hands on this one- I was considering some day I was bored this summer to just Limewire it- a greuling one hour process, and I would never be able to play it at full quality on a TV.
But now I can just go to the store and get it- ON MY BIRTHDAY!!!!!?!?!!?!?!!!!!! (August 30th)
This is going to be my B-day gift to myself this year, for sure!! WOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!

I’ve seen clips of it, and I’ve seen Nintendo’s 1989 ads. So to see those ads in movie form will be HILARIOUS to watch!

Oh, and there was a span of a year or so where I watched Wonder Years EVERY DAY. Sad, I know. Those were the dark ages of my life, lol.
He was a good actor, and still is, I don’t care one anyone says.

Jimmy found the warpzone!
MR_DNA - 05.24.06 7:05 pm
I’m thinking most of us want it for the camp value, Mekman. I wouldn’t mind owning the CD-i Zelda games for the same reason.
Grant - 05.24.06 7:22 pm
I am very interesting in seeing this movie since it came out when I was 1.
PeeeU - 05.24.06 8:02 pm
I just ordered the CD-i Zelda game.. review coming soon.
As for this movie. I must have watched it a hundred times as a kid.
“He has all 74 games!” (or something like that)
Vinnk - 05.24.06 9:30 pm
Phew. I’d only buy a CD-i if someone paid me. I would not even take it for free… it’s that bad. Those games do not look fun at all. Even if they are “Legendary”, remember that they approach Superman 64 in level of Suckiness. (I rented Superman once… the worst 3 minutes of my life.
)
This movie was very entertaining from the clips I’ve watched. I’ll see the whole thing in early september. I’m inviting the whole floor to my dorm room!
Seems like a good way to make friends in my first year of college, dont ya think?
HI - 05.24.06 11:40 pm
PEEEU- same here!
HI - 05.24.06 11:42 pm
a few years back i went nuts looking for the dvd - i couldn’t even find any imports at the time.
i got lucky and found the laserdisc at this video store in the middle of nowhere - i begged them to sell it to me.
can’t wait for august - gonna go home tonight and watch it again!
Ace - 05.25.06 11:20 am
I got the Laserdisc a few years ago, too, because there was no other digital preservation of it. A DVD of the movie was released in Germany a few years back under the title “Joy Stick Heros,” but it had no English soundtrack, so I didn’t bother to get it. But now…
Rick - 05.30.06 3:47 pm
Heh. Laserdisks. Those are great!… if you like 20 inch disks with players slightly bigger than the Xbox.
