Word has been spreading that the twilight realm in Twilight Princess has received a visual overhaul. Back when the game was first shown, we saw a stark, black and white monochromatic world punctuated by the occasional hint of color from Link in wolf form, Midna, or an enemy.
Now, the world sports a much different visual style. When transported to the twilight realm, you will find yourself in a hazy area with over-saturated colors and blown-out lighting.
When Twilight Princess was first displayed, I was ecstatic to see them trying something new with the alternate realm. The contrasty black & white definitely created a moody atmosphere and distinctly separated the two worlds. However, the development team found that playing in the area too long was depressing and boring.
You can see the new style in the following EGM magazine scan and also slipped quietly into a few scenes of the E3 2006 Twilight Princess trailer.

Me like! That’s far more interesting than the kinda ho-hum b&w they had before. Not that b&w is bad or uninteresting, it’s just been done before.

I hope there’s still at least one black and white area in the game.
The black and white castle in Wind Waker was my favorite part.
Torankusu - 05.22.06 2:24 am
B&W makes for a very nice style, and it was used to great effect in some of the cinematics of Dragon Quest 8. However, I agree that it wouldn’t be pleasant to play in black and white for a long while. It does seem a little strange that they went from zero saturation to using oversaturated colours, and I hope they keep the tones subdued such that they don’t wreck the “twilight feel” of the zone.

Me like.
I’m sure there are some areas where the colour is in more of a greyscale - the screenshots are of different areas in the game, after all.
duncan - 05.22.06 2:58 am
That’s a shame. Personally I thought the b+w with selective bits of colour was really well done and distinctive. I don’t think that you can get bored of b+w, I’m a big fan of b+w photography and film, and a lot of the time I find it to be more interesting than colour - as you tend to notice other aspects of the image that you wouldn’t have otherwise considered.

I like the new look. Black and white was already done before in Wind Waker… it was a neat idea, but a little bland and depressing after a while, IMHO. Can’t wait to see more of this new style.
Pikachelsea - 05.22.06 3:18 am
The muddy colors and soft imaging works so much better for that whole “twilight” feel than the black & white did.
Props to Nintendo for taking what was already good and making it better.
Michael Tucker - 05.22.06 3:34 am
I must agree. In DQ8, there is a part near the end of the game that is all in B&W. You travel a large section of overworld, a town, and a moderately sized dungeon with the only thing being in color was your characters. It got grating for a while and when you could finally go back to the regular world, rich with color, it was literally like a breath of fresh air. Not to say a while game in B&W would be bad, like Sadness, but I’m glad to see them putting forth some effort to make a stylized world instead.

digg it!
Kevin - 05.22.06 4:11 am
I like the oversaturation. Before it just looked like a snowy area of hyrule but now it really looks like a different realm. An alien place new and crazy. Look at the bird silouette in the top right corner of the scan and tell me that isn’t cool atmosphere. Personally I think they should have gone with black and white and oversaturation with select colorization. That would have been incredibly cool.

I’m guessing this is for both platforms, but if this new area was redone during the delay, (and supposing in that same delay the Wii features were made/implemented), does this mean we can see the Wii hardware difference here more than the regular world?
Joe - 05.22.06 5:42 am
It looks a lot like the movie Mirrormask.
jtatooine - 05.22.06 6:21 am
THIS GAME JUST KEEPS GETTING BETTER!!!!!!!!!!
Im just soooo happy
Alex - 05.22.06 8:11 am
The Okami influence is undeniable.
fushi - 05.22.06 8:30 am
black and white is getting cliche
nice change

i wasnt that fussed about twilight princess before, sure, i was gonna get it, probably on release with my wii, but now my intrest is very much sparked, i LOVE it when games actually bother to have a visual style to them, and this new twilight reminds me of shadow of the colossus as well as okami. gj nintendo
ALH - 05.22.06 9:33 am
It looks brilliant! They really smoothed things over, assuming this is what the actual game looks like.
amanaplan - 05.22.06 9:41 am
“Playing in the area too long was depressing.”
Ahahahah, it makes people feel like crap. Someone should put this to use on a another title, then!
Momus - 05.22.06 10:11 am
Soft Focus FTW.
Karmakin - 05.22.06 11:02 am
That big snake/fish boss creeps me out.
amanaplan - 05.22.06 11:52 am
:D Either look was fine with me, but it’s a real shame that we associate B&W with “depressing” I dunno why that is. I, too, enjoyed the monochrome castle portion of Wind Waker… and it was even more effective in conveying the coming to life part when it happened… they could have done something similar in TP… though I’m sure cynics would immediately whine about it being just like WW.
Still, the new look certainly looks interesting… it’ll be great to see how it looks/works in action.
fraxyl - 05.22.06 12:07 pm
It’s beautiful !!!
MaCraMaN - 05.22.06 12:45 pm
Looks bloomish enough to be next-gen doesn’t it?
Yeah, blurry games here we come, this is the future.
[MaSQuE] - 05.22.06 1:02 pm
This is better. Kind of like PSYCHONAAAAAAAAUUUTTTSSS!
vakerorokero - 05.22.06 2:06 pm
Props to Nintendo for not making the mistake Bethesda Softworks did in Morrowind. =)
Logan - 05.22.06 2:14 pm
Doesn’t that Link wolf make you feel like there’s some Okami thing going on?!
[MaSQuE] - 05.22.06 2:23 pm
““Playing in the area too long was depressing.”

Sadness, FTW. >_>
Shiro - 05.22.06 2:25 pm
I liked the B&W, but its hard to say how it would have been for long periods. I trust Nintendo that this was a good change.
Luke314pi - 05.22.06 2:40 pm
So let me get this straight…
no ganon in this game?
kingkoopa512 - 05.22.06 3:11 pm
I read this a couple weeks back elsewhere. I’m glad to hear it. I hate black and white areas in otherwise colored games. DQVIII is a good example.

4CR’s Been Slashdotted Y’all
aznedy - 05.22.06 3:19 pm
Mirrormask, exactly what I was thinking.
dan - 05.22.06 3:30 pm
“something new”? What ever happened to Metroid Echoes, and the Zelda for SNES??? Not to mention the hundreds of other dual-reality games, heck, even OoT can be considered as such.
Either way, I’m excited they decided to inject some cutesy colors.
David - 05.22.06 4:09 pm
AWWWW Man…
I liked that B+W idea. Especially since it’s a “twilight” level, that would’ve worked with a slight “Twilight Zone” reference. (that’s the BEST show in history!)
Marc - 05.22.06 4:25 pm
I may be completely wrong on this, but weren’t Link’s transformation and the actual game Okami revealed at the same game event?
Cryton Valance - 05.22.06 4:37 pm
“This is better. Kind of like PSYCHONAAAAAAAAUUUTTTSSS!”
Hell yeah!!
Mitch - 05.22.06 4:38 pm
Yeh, definitely Mirrormask esque.
Cryton Valance - 05.22.06 4:40 pm
Actually, a “monotone” world would be that of a single audio tone.
The phrase you were looking for is “monochromatic”.
GrammarGuy - 05.22.06 5:43 pm
Eh, I liked the older design a lot better.
I also find it odd how many people are saying that B&W is overdone and passe when so many people were all excited about Sadness being done in B&W.
Belgand - 05.22.06 6:07 pm
Begland, the twilight realm was not completely B&W like Sadness. and besides it doesnt fit with the whole game’s ambiance.
I could not care less if link was in a legend of zelda game. I much more like the atmosphere. not just the settings, but the regulah people (not link, zelda, ganondorf)as well.
shiftup - 05.22.06 6:19 pm
The colors really do look similar to those in Psychonauts
But they work
Sailor Maddie Mouse - 05.22.06 6:39 pm
The new Twilight world looks perfect. Anyone who disagrees obviously has a wrong opinion.
BreakfastPills - 05.22.06 7:02 pm
Gotta admire a company willing to take bold new directions based on internal testing/feedback. This just all points to what will be a very focused and well made game
Cameron Usman - 05.22.06 7:29 pm
Love it!
Heartless Gamer - 05.22.06 8:02 pm
I kina miss the old feel that the black and white one had…
Alex - 05.22.06 8:25 pm
:Pi will buy the wii
sirkism - 05.22.06 10:16 pm
Love it, love it, love it
And now TP doesn’t look outstyled by Okami
N Rumas - 05.23.06 1:20 am
Kind of reminds me of the Dark World in ALTTP if it were in 3D and not the top down perspective.
cndnlink - 05.23.06 3:58 pm
These ornate brass lockbusters looked like they opened the door to a secret garden or maybe Bluebeard’s worst room! It was like receiving a box of jewels.
