The roundtable returns this week as we talk about that oldschool Nintendo feeling. You remember the one… That giddy feeling you had as a kid that turned you into a Nintendo fan in the first place. Well, we try to stay on topic… as these roundtables usually go.
John joins me for the news and Vinnk is back with another Rebel in Japan talking about Video Mahjong. And we also get our first voicemail from what I can only assume is a Scottish guy. Keep those great voicemails coming!

And yes, Octorok was doing the roundtable from within a cave.

Ah, comments be working for me again! Not sure if you did anything Nick, but it be working.

Ah, that Nintendo feeling…
The first time I ever saw or played Mario Bros. was at my cousin’s cottage. Their neighbour had an NES, and I was hooked. I know I’m not alone when I say I dreamt about playing Mario for months. Who of that generation didn’t?
But I have to disagree about the Jak/Daxter thing. These characters don’t nearly have as much cultural clout as Mario had back in the late 80s/early 90s. Where’s the Jak cereal, the Jak and Daxter Super Show, the Fred Savage movie featuring amazing footage of the next Jak game? Part of it may be because he didn’t really have much competition — I doubt Sonic has nearly the same kind of recognition among non-gamers — but Mario was a pop culture icon very early in his lifetime.

The Dragging Music Syndrome has spread from Mega Man titles and has now affected Bloody Tears.

OH MY GOD NINTENDO 64!!!!!!!!
jodyanthony - 05.22.06 11:12 am
My Nintendo feeling moments belong to the Mega Man series (specifically #2, the pinnacle both of Mega Man gaming and Mega Man music), and Final Fantasy 1, the first game I ever bought sight-unseen, without renting it first, based on a Nintendo Power write-up. It is still my favorite of all the Final Fantasy games, I go back and play through it again every once in a while, and when Dawn of Souls came out and I saw the upgrades and how they fixed all the things I never realized was wrong with the game in the first place (no more level grinding, YAY!), I fell in love with it all over again.
w0rf - 05.22.06 11:45 am
i reckon he’s irish, doesn’t sound scottish to me.
boaby - 05.22.06 12:29 pm
LOL at those analogies.
Good podcast, I’ll definitely give Mahjong a go.
Spence - 05.22.06 1:33 pm
My Nintendo feeling comes from the 1st Castlevania. Everytime I hear the music, it takes me right back.
Rebel in Japan was awesome! Ive never played, nor plan on playing Majong, but Vinnk you tell stories so well. Best short segment on any podcast out there. Period.
Regginator - 05.22.06 5:22 pm
Oh god, I don’t beleve you aired it, especaily after that whole “Fluxing Naruto” line.
And I’m Scottish, to put that arugment to bed.

Sounds to me like roundtable Nick read the article I sent him
Great podcast guys!

I was a kid who grew up on the snes, not the nes. I had super mario world and super mario all-stars, but I much rather would buy donkey kong country 4 over new super mario brothers. Also i agree that halo is definitely a pop culture icon but not jak and daxter, at all even though its an excellent game.

I just wanted to say that this was another well done podcast by you guys! Also I wanted to say that whenever I hear the intro for “Rebel in Japan”, it sounds like “Rowboat in Japan”. Perhaps I need my ears checked?
When I was a kid we didn’t have video games, unless you count the Speak & Spell. Thank goodness for progress.
SavageS - 05.22.06 9:07 pm
Riiiidge Raaaaacer! Funny stuff guys, always fun to listen to

KiddKalen’s Rating: ******** (8 BOB-OMBS)
PROS:
-Great RoundTable topic once again. Good points from everybody. Very funny stuff. I loved hearing each rebel’s memories of the “Nintendo feeling”.
-Good “Rebel in Japan”. I have zero desire to play mahjong but Vinnk managed to keep it interesting.
CONS:
-No Music. A few weeks ago, DSGamer21 took our requests and then ran off with them, in silence.
