European development team Nibris just released the first screen of their upcoming shoot’em up game for the Nintendo DS, Raid Over the River DS. The game, which will be a prequel to the Wii game of the same name, will feature about 10 levels spread on 3 epochs where you’ll be able to pilot different groups of vehicules from the medieval times, World War II and the future.
While being virtually absent from this year’s E3 (where a playable version of the game was said to be available), Nibris seems to really be “going on with it”, after literally being laughed at last week when they’ve released their Sadness trailer, which basically just consist of a hot-type lady trying to show us the concept of what their game could be, if it ever sees the light of day. Anyway, hit the following link to look at the first screen of Nibris’ shmup.

10 Levels? Pass.

the screenshot looks pretty nice, not sure why theyre opting for the semi celshaded style with the lines around certain polygons, i think the game would look nicer if they let the engine AA off the seems.
and Ive got mixed feelings about the game, some stuff sounds great, some stuff sounds pretty average

I welcome any shmup games.
I think 10 levels is generous for a good shmup, Matt o_o.

Am pretty intrigued by this. After playing Nanostray, which I really liked, it would be nice to have a go at a purer shmup…8)

Ah I LOVED Time Pilot!

Personally I quite liked the Sadness trailer. It was trying to sell the concept of the game, which is more in keeping with the philosophy of the Wii.
I can guess most of the responses; ‘Oh, no screenshots?’.
Oh yeh… mmm, Raid Over the River eh? Could be a good un. Not much of a shmup fan tho.

I really like the style they are going for. They’re not trying to push polygons, but rather pushing art. The hand-drawn nature of everything has me captivated and I’m reall rooting for these guys. Hopfully with that lower polygon count, they can ramp up a difficulty mode with tons of enemies on the screen.

Oh, and the Sadness trailer. I lied all the concepts (especialy hitting things on the ground while running, but I’m wary of how well they will translate those actions into practice.

I didn’t even know there was a Sadness trailer out, or that I was supposed to be laughing.

The Sadness trailer WAS a waste of time (why they didn’t just save money and effort and wait until they can create an enticing trailer I don’t know) but Nibris seem to have a good shot at making their games a reality. Apparantly, they have a lot of combined experience.
Though I’m more interested in RotR Wii than Sadness..

Good luck with that.

I’m not even convinced that’s a real DS screenshot (the mixture of antialiased and plain text, in all different fonts, some with glow effects and some not, just says “mockup” to me), but I think the big black borders work, especially if they demarcate “things you fly over” vs. “things you have to shoot or you’ll die”. Regardless, though, Nanostray looked a lot nicer. I guess it comes down to how playable this one is, because while I really enjoyed Nanostray, it wasn’t the most responsive shooter I ever played.
As for Sadness, if they’re not at a point where they can release screenshots, I don’t have any expectation that the product exists at all. Not everyone wants screenshots because they’re graphics whores…. some of us just see a new Eastern European developer no one’s heard of yet, with no publishing deals, and assume their products are vaporware until something really solid appears.

Sorry for the double post, but I just noticed that the “x”’s and the digits on the left side of the touchscreen don’t even line up. That has to be a mockup, and a lousy one.

I wish i thought otherwise, but I’m pretty convinced these guys are a bunch of concept artists who can’t get jobs at game companies. Nothing playable at E3, no video of ROTR which seems to have been in development for awhile, and a single DS screen shot with a bunch of tell-tale mockup signs? Not promising, especially considering they’d get sued hardcore for ripping off the essence of River Raid if this was even close to becoming a reality.
I love schmups, though, I’ll trust Konami and Treasure to provide them for me. Even “good” doesn’t cut it anymore, when “good” takes the same $$$ out of my wallet as “great”.

Looks like a nice concept to me.
10 levels for a SHUMP is very nice.
The level design reminds me of Nanotray, which is a GOOD thing!
Kamalot - 05.21.06 4:38 am
Well, Konami and Treasure haven’t produced any DS top down shooters so far, at least that I’ve heard. Then again, neither have these guys, yet.
While they do seem to be treading a little close to ripping off Activision with Raid over the River (they couldn’t have picked a less obvious name?) I don’t think “flying a plane up a river shooting obstacles” is any more copyrightable as a scenario than “running to the right through a scrolling geometric playfield” or “trying to escape a Nazi prison”.

Sadness is going to tank. In the worst way. It’s just another Resident evil wanna-be, except completely pointless. I think it will be released, but see sales worse than, lets say, Ico for PS2. (Or the 360 in Japan! OOH! *Croud laughs, slapping their knees*)
Raid over the river, on the other hand, could be good. I’d need a video to decide.

antialiasing please?

Is this even real? Same with the Wii version, and Sadness.

Thank you!
