I’m not going to come out and say that you’re a jerk if you haven’t either bought or at least made plans to buy the New Super Mario Bros. game. Let’s just say that if I happen to hear someone call you a jerk, I’m not gonna be the guy who denies it. It’s nothing personal. It’s strictly Mario business.
Japan’s commercial for New Super Mario Bros. follows Nintendo’s trend towards putting as much emphasis on the player as they are on the game. The 30-second spot features more camera time on the woman playing than on the actual gameplay! Nintendo of Japan has put up several similar videos showing a variety of people trying out the game and having a lot of fun with it.
What about the folks who don’t just want to play the game, but want to actually live out the Mario experience? I propose a trip to the unofficial “Nintendo Amusement Park (Beta)”. Armed with a power-assist harness and a ridiculous mustache, you’ll be able to jump your way through a real life obstacle course themed after classic Mario level design. From the looks of the demo video, breaking your arm after a mistimed jump seems just as likely as fulfilling your platformer dreams.

Well ill be the first to say it to anyone without a copy…JERKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ha, no mention of Mario in the “Nintendo Amusement Park”. They should let people sit in the clouds and pelt the players with spinies. How would they simulate the bottomless pits?

Sugoi!

Aww, unfortunately I live in Europe and the game hasn’t been released here, but I’m getting it on Saturday on import, Yay!

“Hey, if Sony is ripping off Nintendo’s products… how about we rip off their name and characters! They won’t mind!”

My wife loves this game so much, that I have hardly even got to play it yet.
Luke314pi - 05.17.06 1:43 pm
That commercial is weird and cute at the same time. God, I really need a girlfriend
Here in Europe we still have to wait till the end of July.
Onitzukascorpion - 05.17.06 1:44 pm
Just picked it up this morning before work. Let’s just say my productivity in the office is a joke today. ;D

NSMB is simply perfect. I feel like I did the first time I played through SMB3 or SMW. I’m going to be so sad when I finish it. 80 levels just isn’t enough!
Geoff - 05.17.06 2:20 pm
Haha I know Luke- I had to wait until my girlfriend was on world 2 before I got to play it.

I actually was in the class where the Amusement park was made. Right now its more of a concept, a great one at that. We all hope it actually gets made, anyone know someone at Nintendo they can contact? It came out of the same class as the PacManhattan Project that was made a few years ago. If any of you live in New York, I recommend checking out the ITP Show next time it rolls around, sometime in December. It always has some amazing projects. Check out some of the ones from the last show- http://itp.nyu.edu/show/

I bought NSMB yesterday, and it fulfils all my expectations. and more.
That amusement park sounds awesome!
SereneCrimson - 05.17.06 3:36 pm
I’m waiting to get it with a Lite next month.
amanaplan - 05.17.06 4:15 pm
I wan’t a lite pretty badly, as this would be the perfect game for it, but I want RED!
I’ll have to wait until this holiday when they release a red version EXCLUSIVELY FOR JAPAN (as always). Then I’ll import it. Then a month later they will announce it for US release. Just my luck- already happened with the GB micro.
HI - 05.17.06 4:36 pm
AWWWWW MAAN!!!
The Japanese are REALLY getting that yellow box! Dammit, I wanted them to release that in America!!!

Marc - 05.17.06 4:42 pm
^ with the exception of Hiroshima
(my sincerest apologizes)
Marc - 05.17.06 4:47 pm
this game rules and the ign reviewer that said getting the three coins on most stages is a joke apparantly is of a higher gaming intellect then myself. some are dang tough! i cannot for the life of me figure out how to get to world 4 either.
Lawrence - 05.17.06 6:05 pm
I love these ads because they show players’ reactions. Check out the Tetris DS ads — go to Media Gallery on the left and Tetris is the second in the list. They show some situations that will be familiar to anyone who’s played Tetris — such as setting up a perfect 4-line scenario then accidentally dropping the “I” block in the wrong place.
I love how one ad shows someone playing at level 18, super fast, and it shows the player and it’s this housewife sitting on her couch!
CTU Kyoto - 05.17.06 6:24 pm
I really, really, really want it, but I’ve been out of work since October and just can’t afford it.
Belgand - 05.17.06 6:33 pm
@Lawrence: You didn’t read IGN’s review very carefully, did you? Here is a quote: “The challenge is to snag three large coins in each level… Many of the coins aren’t easily snagged, and it’s here where much of New Super Mario Bros.’ challenge and most of the game’s length emerges.”
Geoff - 05.17.06 8:46 pm
OMG… When did they sneak cameras into my house?!?
That chick reminds me of last night when I picked the game up for the first time… Ahhh…
NekoTsukimi - 05.17.06 8:47 pm
Thanks to the game’s release date being perilously close to my birthday, I have been forbidden to buy it for myself until after the big day. If I don’t get it, I imagine I’ll put it off another couple weeks so I can play it for the first time on a DS Lite….
raindog - 05.18.06 12:32 am
1. I really liked that commercial. Simple but, I think, effective. She looked like she was just having fun.
2. I also liked the videos of random Japanese folks playing. 「できた⋆!」 The way video six ended was of particular amusement to me.
3. Amusement park … WTF?
Jonathan (ジョナサン) - 05.19.06 5:17 am
