Nibris has released screenshots from the trailer for their upcoming game Sadness which they plan on showing next week at E3. The pictures not only give a glimpse of some in-game footage, but also appear to show how a player would interact with the game while playing. I’m really digging the implementation of the black and white style Nibris was telling us about and I can’t wait to see the full trailer next week.

I concur. The graphics are ‘digging’.

Woo! Polish girls!
Mitch - 05.04.06 6:13 pm
I still don’t believe for a second that that 3rd pic is in any way gameplay footage. I need more than a shot or even a trailer to convince me, thanks.
At least it’s not clear that the shots of the the one girl are “playing” shots though.
Goober - 05.04.06 6:14 pm
Is it me or do those graphics look better than Red Steel?
Hmm…can’t wait to see what Nintendo’ll show us!
Marc - 05.04.06 6:28 pm
Goober: It’s pretty clear. I mean, you should probably be able to infer that what she’s holding in her hand is a Wii controller and seeing as how this is from the trailer for the game then it’s a safe bet that she would be playing the product that the company is trying to advertise.
And there’s a difference between “in-game” and “gameplay”. By this point in the development cycle and simply by seeing that the image isn’t of prerendered quality, there’s a pretty good chance that the picture is using the game’s engine, which, of course, is still subject to change. However, you’re probably right, that image is likely of a scripted scene and not actual gameplay. However, who knows? Perhaps they did create a demo to be used in-house while making this trailer.

I am very, very excited about the prospects of this game. It’s cool, cuz for one, they are only developing for Nintendo, which means they’re solely concentrating on the functionality of the Wheeeeeeee, but also this is a nice genre to introduce onto Nintendo, which will hopefully mean more mature games in the future.
Beansly - 05.04.06 6:28 pm
Umm, no. Just no. There is no way you can convince me those are legit. It doesn’t mesh with the atmosphere Nibris claims to be implementing (apart from the black and white motif). Furthermore, two of the shots are just pictures of some woman and the last shot is a horribly Photoshopped photo.
Bunk.
Ryan - 05.04.06 6:30 pm
Michael, I realize it could just be an in engine shot, but it really doesn’t look like anything but concept art to me. I’m excited to see more, for sure, but I just have no reason to think that this would be a real shot from the game in any form at this point.
Goober - 05.04.06 6:30 pm
Silly rabbits, those are black and white photographs of a Polish chick in a tank. Even on hi-res models, you’ll notice proportional discrepencies, textured surfaces, overly-prettied gloss and bloom effects, and rigid curves. There is no evidence of any polygonal surfaces or shaders anywhere on those images, except the last one.
The Xbox 360 couldn’t pull off that kind of model resolution, nor can the PS3 (save for the Unreal 3 engine), these are photographs.
Leonaken - 05.04.06 6:45 pm
Leonaken: yeah, you’re right. I didn’t think people would have a problem realizing this, but perhaps some might.
The first two shots are simply demos of a lady interacting with the game. Those are supposed to show a real woman and not represent game footage. A few weeks ago Nibris actually sent 4cr some info about the trailer they were going to present at E3 detailing exactly what we’re seeing in these screenshots.
Michael - 05.04.06 7:01 pm
Ryan, If you check out the Nibris website, you’ll notice that they have a very good grasp on how to create horrible images in Photoshop. I have a feeling this game is not going to look very pretty at all…
cole - 05.04.06 7:07 pm
^^^ sorry… It’s not Nibris who has the junky looking concept art, there stuff looks pretty sweet. I was thinking of another developer who is putting stuff out on the Wii. I forget their name. Opps
cole - 05.04.06 7:10 pm
well to me this looks like pictures from the trailer of the game. With a woman holding the controller in one of the many ways you would play the game and no in game footage here. I guess nintendo said they could only tease people with these shots and no ingame stuff.
p.s: Altho that last shot could be someting from the game. It could be the character the woman from the previous two pictures is controling.
alexadroog - 05.04.06 7:23 pm
oh i see michel, I said what you said somewhat
alexadroog - 05.04.06 7:25 pm
She’s pretty hot. *drools…*
Oh, uh, and neat art style too… yeah….
um……. *prints pictures, runs away*
HI - 05.04.06 7:37 pm
the third pic is hte only one that could be in game, and even then, it’s 1280×720. As much as I’m dying to play the game, the Wii doesn’t do HD, so I call bullshot.
Ry - 05.04.06 7:40 pm
Eh…it looks shopped, I can see pixels,etc.
Is this another one of those games that they’re developing for a console, but the publisher doesn’t know about yet?
I really want this to be legit, though.
Scentless - 05.04.06 7:44 pm
Yeah, regardless on if they’re in-game or not, I love the idea of this game. It sounds like a system seller for me. But hey, Trace Memory was my DS system seller! So I must be crazy!
Buttonbasher - 05.04.06 7:54 pm
Yes, if there are pixels present, it must be photoshop trickery. There is no other explanation for the presence of pixels in a digital image. jk
KiddKalen - 05.04.06 7:55 pm
“Is this another one of those games that they’re developing for a console, but the publisher doesn’t know about yet?”
-SCENTLESS
Haha. That’s a funny way to put it. Is there a publisher yet? I am too lazy to check.
KiddKalen - 05.04.06 7:57 pm
I will never believe those are real. Even though I’m a Nintendo fanboy.
Nacho™ - 05.04.06 8:00 pm
Ry has a good point.
Also, if the final image is a 3D model, the poly count looks too high for Wii. If you look back at the Red Steel screens, the detail is mainly from shaders and the poly count is pretty low. I guess it could be possible that’s the model used for generating normal maps though.
AJ - 05.04.06 8:30 pm
Well if you look at something like Resident Evil (remake or 4) the poly counts can get pretty nice on some characters. In an FPS with alot more going on, they’re going to be much lower. In a steadily paced horror game, you can get away with tons more detail in the characters because you only need one or maybe two at a time on the screen. Not that I’m saying it’s real because I don’t think it is, just that certain games can get away with way more polys in certain areas than other games.
Goober - 05.04.06 9:17 pm
Why can’t people figure the images out?
Pictures one and two are not ingame shots. They are demonstrating a person using the controller.
Picture three IS ingame. A bloom affect is cast around the model, and has a slight threshold too. It hides the polygons quite nicely.
Clay Handley - 05.04.06 10:42 pm
I really wish Poland based Nibris a lot of luck with Sadness and all of their other upcoming titles as well. This game’s got an interesting premise going for it, and at least from the artwork and first screenshot, it looks like it’ll be a good one. I’m looking forward to seeing it at E3 next week.

Paul Gale - 05.04.06 10:47 pm
Let’s all cry why don’t we?
The first two are pictures of the player (bonus points to Nibris for demoing with Nintendo’s new target audience) doing the action the character, in image 3, performs. Apparently Sadness is about smashing shovels into skeletons, but whatever the plot is, it’s abundantly clear what’s going on. And so what if it’s in super-magic resolution? Maybe you’ve heard of Sony using those-aren’t-playstations to prerender trailers. I know, I know, it’s scandalous!
amanaplan - 05.04.06 11:01 pm
I’ll admit that I’m a noob at any knowledge whatsoever to this game other than I knew it was black and white. Drop some knowledge on my ass if necessary. I can’t tell if those pictures are real or not, that’s a very good sign and a time I knew would come eventually. Either that or it is with actors except unlike the old games like mortal kombat or phantasmagoria, they get the actors and such in a room filled with cameras in every possible location so you can move around in the space. Either way, I’m psyched. I really do hope the level of graphics have reached that far though. I’ve waited most of my life for that.
Syril Ram - 05.05.06 1:14 am
I’m excited by this games premise anyway; the fact it’s on Wii makes it even more alluring. Plus hot babes weilding Wii remotes is never going to be a bad thing.
I don’t see why that 3rd screenshot couldn’t be from Wii. I’ve seen almost as good in Resident Evil 4 and Killer 7 - this is in black and white so creating those kind of graphics is totally possible on a system twice as powerful.
Jack Wallington - 05.05.06 3:20 am
How could anyone EVER think the first two images are part of the game? What kind of fool can’t distinguish between some girl in real life playing the game, and the game itself?
Papercut - 05.05.06 3:58 am
I concur with papercut…I mean seriously C’mon guys.
Kristofor - 05.05.06 7:03 am
It looks like she is holding av Wii-mote!
Johan - 05.05.06 10:17 am
damn I hate this kind of screenshots. Its just the cinematic, not in-game screenshot.
Oh btw this game is black and white so don’t expect any great gfx effects. Heck, you can even play this game on black and white TV.
chris - 05.05.06 10:50 am
I _do_ expect great graphic effects, in black and white.
amanaplan - 05.05.06 11:10 am
Eh…I can’t see exactly what’s she’s holding. Like I said, does Nibris even have a Wii devkit? I really want this to be real, but it looks…fishy.
Scentless - 05.05.06 11:50 am
c’mon people . . . snap out of it. every game developer who has commented on the graphical capibilities of the Wii have said it’s about 1.5-2 times that of the Gamecube. the Wii is not capible of giving us in game graphics that compare to those shown in photo’s 1 and 2. stop wishing and hoping. it isn’t gonna happen. those are either cut scenes to help the story along or demostrations in a commercial type presentation of someone playing the game. the 3rd photo is either, and most probably, a cut scene as well or we may get lucky and have it be acutal in game graphics, but i wouldn’t bet on it. it’s been made very clear that the Wii will NOT be on the same plane graphically as it’s competitors. however it will offer unique gameplay that they can’t offer . . . and that’s why i’ll die a nintendo zealot.
jirkstore - 05.05.06 5:04 pm
I’ll be happy if the game is as scary as they claim it will be. Still, that last shot sucks the big one.
Ryan - 05.05.06 6:22 pm
This game will become the Schindler’s List of video games. I hope it imitates ‘The Ring’ and use those video effects to the max for scare factor!
chris - 05.06.06 3:43 am
continue from above:
Hey why didn’t anyone make ‘The ring’ into a video game? Damn that will scare the hell out of all gamers! They should put a label on the game: “After playing this game, let someone else play it, or that creepy girl with dripping wet hair will come out from the TV and give you a facial make-over!”
