Today a gaming legend turns 20 years old. In those past 20 years Link has had many an epic adventure and in turn, us with him. What many would consider the greatest gaming franchise has always remained true to its original vision, whether that be on an 8bit console, gaming on the go, cel shaded graphics or an frightening impending moon.
I look around today and see that the Zelda series is still as strong, if not more so, than it has ever been. Link is a true hero. He grows from humble beginnings and conquers his fears and foes to become legendary. But the best part is, we are Link. We are the link between a small electronic box and the magical worlds of Hyrule, Koholint Island, Termina, Labrynna, Holodrum or the many bordering exotic locales. Link’s wide-eyed sense of adventure and duty allow us to venture on, completing the quest that must done.
But of course, it isn’t all duty and hardship. There is fun to be had in these worlds and friends to meet. Crashing into trees, swimming under bridges and helping out your neighbors all make for a life worth living. And of course, so does romance.
So, as I’ve said before and as I know I’ll say many more times, thank you Miyamoto and everyone who has ever worked on a Zelda game. You didn’t just create something to chip away the idle time of people, you gave them something to live. You gave us new worlds to explore and taught us that the impossible really isn’t if we just give it a little effort. Here’s to 20 more.
