We are back with a new podcast for a new year and it might just be our most thought provoking yet. In the roundtable we discuss Edutainment games and their place in the industry. Vinnk also brings us a powerful Rebel In Japan about Japanese Nationalism and the launch of the 360. Finally, DSgamer21 plays a little Mario Kart piano piece for our aural enjoyment.

“E3… We gotta send somebody.”
Where do volunteers sign up?
JDavis - 01.02.06 3:36 pm
If you’re taking a business course, just say your going to E3 to “observe current gaming advertising techniques and their effectiveness”.
Or start a video game club, and put down E3 as the club trip.

About next-gen graphics - you can’t count the current Xbox 360 games as truly next-gen. That is either last gen plus a little, or it is PC-graphics on high detail. Wait a little, wait for Gears of War and you will see that the Xbox 360 has in fact great graphics.

Yet another great Podcast.
I have a problem with the Podcasts, though. They cut off early, and I almost NEVER get to hear the outro. It normally cuts off in the voicemail segments. What the heck is going on?

I’m listening to them on my shiny new iPod, and yes, I have tons of available space.

About education in games: The one thing I’ve learned the most from video games is probably the english language. That’s because you don’t get a German translation of Final Fantasy V or Seiken Densetsu 3. (actually I think there are German roms out there by now, but there weren’t back then) And another reason why I learned english is, that ~75% of the internet is english.
And the game that I actively learned from the most is probably Civ III. I don’t know why, but at one point in the game I paused, opened the Civilopedia (or whatever it is called) and browsed through the history of India and several other countries that I didn’t learn anything about in school. It was really interesting. You can do the same thing in Civ IV if you want. You can read a whole lot about everything you can do in the game.
Sagan - 01.02.06 5:10 pm
Matt, you are really getting a problem with this podcast? Darn. We tried a different encoding this time and everything. As far as I can tell, this podcast should work flawlessly.
Did it happen on this podcast (the cutting out) or just in previous ones?
Nick - 01.02.06 5:11 pm
I use Media Player Classic (Second almost to VLC in versatility), and previous podcasts have reached the end of its scroll bar, but the clock at the bottom would continue to the predisposed time.
So, it might be the same problem.

MmMmM Mos Burger… When I lived in Taiwan, that was my favorite restaurant. Rice Teriyaki Burgers…damn. Oh yeah, and the McDonalds is WAY better in Asia. I think about it..and it seems as if Asian countries are so much more accepting of different cultures. WHoo! Go AZN!!
eggroll - 01.02.06 6:30 pm
Great Podcast guys.
I love the Rebel in Japan part, I completely agree with what you are saying there.

Good job 4CR,
Monty - 01.02.06 10:31 pm
Another great podcast!
Vinnk, excellent “Rebel in Japan”!
(BTW, I went to Gaidai too!)
Ryan - 01.03.06 2:03 am
Wow Ryan! That’s amazing. It’s such a small world.
Vinnk - 01.03.06 2:20 am
Monty - agreed. NGC is a VERY well respected magazine. When they were N64 Magazine, it was and still remains the only magazine I’ve ever subscribed to.
Yorrike - 01.03.06 6:17 am
Sorry guys, we didnt mean to disrespect any specific magazine, we were just saying we still hadnt heard any more concrete info then the scans in that mag.
Nick - 01.03.06 1:02 pm
Why is iPodder downloading 4 copies of it?! I’m not listening to it THAT much!
gregsabo - 01.04.06 1:25 am
Really great, as always.
Rebel in Japan: Ownage! I really liked how you told everyone, out straight, what the deal is with Xbox 360 selling bad in Japan, Vinnk. Great job on that. I mean, it really makes sense, but of course people need to take things personal. 360 don’t really interest me much either, mainly because there are no games released that interest me, not because it’s an Microsoft product made in the US. The only product they made that I resent is their web browser.
Roundtable: I know, personally, what I learned form games are English. OK, we have great English education in Sweden, but being a gamer, you are forced to learn English either way. I know my reading and writing skills have improved over time, much thanks to games. I still don’t have much experience in speaking English though, but I could make my point get across in a n conversation never the less. Aside form that, really interesting segment as always.
DSgamer21: Great tune, but sadly a bit short. Aside form that, it was great.
Voicemail: Slow this week… I guess its time for me to send something soon then.
Look forward to it.
