Despite having exams this week I’ve managed to get a lot of game time in. I just finished Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time and I’ll say this; if you don’t have this game yet, you are missing out. Seriously, Nintendo has done a great job with their Mario RPG offerings since the SNES Super Mario RPG and the latest in the series is no different.

Even if this game isn’t a direct sequel to Mario & Luigi: Superstars Saga for the GBA, I’d also recommend you play that game if you haven’t done so already. One of the things I really like about these two titles is the battle system. Sure, your stats will affect how powerful you are, how much HP you have and so forth, but the fun part is that the battles are so interactive! Counters, dodging and more powerful attacks are all executed with your own skills, not just random numbers and stats. If you want to dodge an attack in this game, you have to actually press a button at the right time. Whats more, for some attacks, if you dodge JUST at the right time, you will counter-attack the enemy. Also, pressing the correct button at the right time during an attack will increase the power of that attack, and in some special circumstances even allow you to make extra attacks!
If this excellent battle system wasn’t enough, there’s even more for this game to offer. For one, the localization is just awesome. As noted in previous posts with the l337 talking Hammer Bros., there is a lot of quirky humor everywhere in the game. Even better yet, the storyline is solid all the way through. Although light-hearted and made to cater people of all ages, you won’t feel alienated from this game and will have a good laugh throughout. One noticeable difference from the GBA version is the use of more detailed animations. Its one of the first things I noticed about this game and it’s something I want to see in more future games… beautifully animated 2D sprites.
I’ve been playing this game almost non-stop since I got it and it took me about 16 hours to finish it. There is probably some stuff I haven’t seen in my run through, but it kept me captivated all the entire time. This should be in everyone’s collection.

i agree, i have this game and i love it.

already ordered my import copy from the US….
eeeehaaaaaaaa
zorniki - 12.14.05 5:31 am
Yeah, I think I better order it from the US. I ordered Phoenix Wright, and damn if that wasn’t a good decision, the game is utterly superb. And I loved superstar Saga so importing is probably the way to go.
Reviews seem to say it is a bit weaker than the original in story though. Would you agree?

I need to get around to this once I get my stupid second star ranking on MK:DS. It’s been sitting sadly on my shelf for a week now…
o-kuma - 12.14.05 5:42 am
I played until the 3rd cobalt star and suddenly my AC:WW copy arrived T_T
I’m continuing it now after a week leaving the game
CaTZ - 12.14.05 5:44 am
hmm, I didn’t find the story weaker at all. It kept my total attention even though I’m now in the process of studying/doing my final exams!
Bombs - 12.14.05 5:45 am
Yep, I love this game.
The dialog is laugh-out-loud funny, and the game mechanics is totally fresh!
Once again, Nintendo hits a homerun!!

Never played Superstar Saga, but I got bored of Paper Mario 2 which sounds like it has basically an identical battle system.
What I find about the “turn-based with timing” thing is that it makes battles take a lot longer than in normal turn-based games, and for those of us who hate turn-based play it quickly becomes very tedious (and I don’t know about SS or PIT, but PM2 had the same exact music during every battle scene which nearly drove me insane.)
As much as I disliked Spyro DS overall, I think its “realtime RPG” feel (each time you hit an opponent or get hit, the appropriate number of hit points float away) is a nice compromise between turn-based RPG and action game.
raindog - 12.14.05 11:33 am
Any special items or unlockables if you put Superstar Saga in the GBA slot at the same time?
duncan - 12.14.05 11:34 am
Duncan: No, they don’t interact at all from what I’ve seen.
I actually found the humor in this one to be more successful overall… but that’s just me. I didn’t find the story to be any weaker, but the fact that the enemies largely speak in some alien dialect that you cannot understand obviously takes away from their quirkiness.
My only real problem with the game is that bosses (and even some normal enemies) just have an INSANE amount of hitpoints. You sit there doing the same few moves constantly and it seems like some of them will never end.
Tony - 12.14.05 12:53 pm
@ Tony: Ah well. Thanks.
IIRC, Superstar Saga had bosses with huge amounts of hitpoints too. I remember fighting for what must have been over an hour on one boss. (Not even the final one! It was the one after some jungle, I think..)

I just picked up Superstar Saga with the idea that I would finish it before I started Partners in Time. What a great game! I think I like it more than Paper Mario TTYD. Its not hard but it is definitely more difficult than TTYD- which makes me happy.

I’ve kind of been dissapointed that not as many people have been talking about this game, because it really deserves a lot more attention. I think it’s been drowned out by Mario Kart DS and Animal Crossing a bit. This game is absolutely gorgeous, I’d say the best looking game on the DS so far. The variety of animations, the fluidity of them, the polish of the environment, characters…just everything. It’s just so well done in every way, it makes me smile just playing it and I look forward to each and every new level/character I encounter. This is a perfect example of 2D sprites out performing 3D graphics. I hope they come out with a Paper Mario: DS and I hope it looks and feels as great as Mario and Luigi: PiT.
robotplague - 12.14.05 1:12 pm
I have to disagree that this is a game that should be in everyones collection. I’ve been playing it quite a bit since it came out, and am nearing the 16 hour mark and it seems like the game is going to end soon so I’m sure my opinion at this point will probably be how I really see the game.
In all honesty, the game feels a little shallow. The battle system has many flaws and can easily be exploited later on (I win every battle with my 2nd attack now…) and the plotline and story is pretty much non-existant or tacked on. The game is also very linear, and doesn’t allow really for any exploration. Overall the music, graphics and gameplay is very well done, but for me it was just a bit disappointing, when I was expecting a “bigger” experience from this game.
So for me, it was pretty much worth the purchase due to the production value, but I doubt that I’ll be playing through it more thann once. If you don’t already own it, find a friend and borrow it for a while.
Joseph - 12.14.05 1:25 pm
I completely agree with you Joseph, this game was extremely unimpressive compare to Superstar Saga.
When i first heard of this game I was excited to do possibly do action commands using the touch screen. As it turns out you only are allowed to use the touch screen ONCE in the entire game, and it is for some entirely unskilled and simple rubbing. I enjoyed the addition of the X and Y buttons, but felt that they didn’t make the game that much better. The second screen was used only for a very weak map that only showed which room you were currently in, but not your position in that room.
The battle system was completely repetetive, as well as ridiculously simple (especially if you used brother items.) I was really disapointed that they took out brother points in place of the brother items, especially since some of them (especially the red shell) are extremely broken items. Also the action commands for all attacks AND dodging were much simpler to acheive then in Superstar Saga. The brother item moves were also very straight forward, the addition of the babies into the brother item moves hardly made them any more challenging to accomplish, especially since you could just ignore the babies entirely and still do easy damage.
As for the over all game there is almost no exploration at all. There is no overworld to speak of, the storyline is completely linear, there are no sidequests whatsoever, and the only thing you can search for in the entire game is for beans to get godly badges which make the battle system even easier (if that was at all possible!) As Joseph says above, the plot-line seems to be tacked on, and it is fairly uncreative especially considering that its a Mario RPG.
As for puzzle solving using out of battle brother moves they get even more repetitive then the battle system. There are about two different puzzles for each brother move combination (there are about 4 combinations of brother moves)… and thats it, they then simply use the same exact puzzle thing about a million times over throughout the enitire game.
The one good thing i can say about this game is that it was very short (it took me about 14 hours to beat, collecting every bean and badge, with my characters at level 45.) I also mildly enjoyed the very final boss because it was the only boss in the entire game that you had to creatively beat. The graphics and the sound were failry decent, but I didn’t really see much of an upgrade from SuperStar Saga. There were some well written story points (I especially enjoyed the 1337 speaking hammer bros.) but for the most part I found the first game to be much funnier, much more enganging, much more challenging, and overall much more fun.
Basically this game was mildly fun, but if you have a choice between this game and say MarioKart DS or Animal Crossing WW, definitely pick MK or AC. Also I would reccomend picking up SuperStar Saga before getting this game too, but if you have alreadly played all of those games, give Partners in Time a try, maybe you’ll like it better then me.
KCGB - 12.14.05 6:13 pm
Paper Mario would work so well on the DS. You can use the Mic to blow paper airplane Mario or use the touch screen actively in battle for the Hammer motion or the field for certain puzzles.
I haven’t picked up PiT yet, sometime around Christmas it will be mine!
DeAngelo Guillory - 12.14.05 9:29 pm
Joseph and KCGB, thanks for your impressions. Im glad you guys took the time to express them. I like hearing other peoples opinions. Because I loved the first game so much I was planning to get this right after my finals text tuesday. Now Im not so sure.
I really dont care if the battle system is the same (or very close to) the original. What I really want this game for is the story.
I really enjoyed the first game. It had beautiful graphics, an engaging battle system and best of all, a hilarious story. I hate to say this, but I really just wanted more of the same out of the sequel.
So…will I be happy with the story in this? Are there funny new characters and memorable moments? Are there crazy worlds and tongue in cheek references? Thats what Im hoping for.
Nick - 12.14.05 9:57 pm
DeAngelo Guillory i think that a paper luigi would work well, they kind of hinted about in PM:TtYD with that one goomba, similar to how they hinted about Luigi’s Mansion in the first Paper Mario
frazierguy - 12.14.05 10:52 pm
I have Castlevania DS, Mario Kart DS, Animal Crossing DS, Nintendogs, Advance Wars Dual Strike, Metroid Prime Pinball, and a bunch of other DS games, and so far Mario & Luigi: PiT is one of my favourite DS games. I absolutely loved Superstar Saga — finished it 4 times — and despite some modifications, I think PiT carries on the spirit of Superstar Saga quite well. As much as I enjoyed mastering the Bros Attacks in Superstar Saga, I think the use of Bros Items is a step up — it gives you a much wider variety of attacks, and some of them damage multiple opponents, which can be very useful at times.
PiT has the same witty and inventive sense of humour, and it’s got a great “cute” factor — I just can’t help letting out a girlish giggle (and I’m a 33-year-old male, married) when the babies Mario & Luigi do their cute little baby thangs.
The rumble pak functionality is nice, too — it almost makes me feel like I’m playing a Gamecube game, with the rumbling controller. It’s a small thing, but adds a nice extra dimension.
I can see the basis for some of the criticisms listed above, but I’m enjoying the game so much that I either don’t agree or else the faults are so minor that they don’t matter to me. PiT isn’t perfect, and it isn’t all that much better than Superstar Saga, but it sure as heck is fun.
Origamian - 12.15.05 1:25 am
Nick: Well, if you’re a big big fan of the original, then it’s probably worth it to pick this one up. But also I loved the first one, and I think that’s partially why I was a bit disappointed overall with this one. As I said before, the production value is fantastic. Great animations, creative enemies, and some great “silent movie” moments. Also be aware the Baby Princess crying noise is even more annoying than Mario in Yoshi’s Island :\ (It’s supposed to be…)
I think really the thing that bugged me the absolute most though, was how linear it was. I just loved how in the first one, you passed by all these crazy high ledges, doors, barriers, switches, ghost statues and other obstacles that you knew you’d be coming back to explore, whereas the new one lacks all of this.
I really have to agree though, that the game IS fun and worth playing. At one point I played 4 1/2 hours of it straight. It’s just that when I’m done playing and think back to it, I realize how much potential the game had to be much greater. But hey, when you think about the games that came out in the first year of the gba… at least I can say we have a lot to look forward to with the DS

he’s just long to kill, but fairly easy, when he’s standing, use the trampoline and cannon
when he’s in the ground. use the Green Shell

Good evening All,
This is Daddy Tuna writing this message for Little Mino.
When you get eaten by the Giant on the cliff, and you are face with the small giant (inside the big giant), how do you defeat it?
If you don’t want to give us the complete answer, hints would be helpful.
Thanks
Tuna & Mino
Mino - 12.29.05 8:14 pm
How much HP does Mrs. Thwomp have?I keep on getting kilt.
Erik - 12.31.05 1:13 pm
All of the bosses in Partners in time were made a lot easier because of the bros moves with items. I can hit an 800 with a red shell! About the mrs thwomp, I dont know how much health she has but all u have to do is use the trampoline like 5 times. One more thing, on the last boss which took me 2 hours, the mix flower really helps. DOES ANYONE KNOW WHERE TO DOWNLOAD THE FINAL BOSS MUSIC I CANT FIND IT ANYWHERE!!!!!!!!!!!!
TY - 12.31.05 4:36 pm
ya that music was awesome and very final boss-ish not sure where to get it though to beat Mrs. Thwomp when she splits in to 4 smaller ones watch what she looks like before she rolls off the screen, she either has a small chip off of part of her or her teeth are a certian way. The one that looks the same as the one that rolled off the screen is the real one and the rest are apparently just goombas or something
Time_Flux - 01.07.06 1:17 am
for the egg thing you either have to use a sideways attack like green shell or knock him down by breaking the eggs in front of him then use jump/trampoline/cannon after the yoshis knock him over, it takes 5 yoshis to push the rock in the battle instead of the usual six. To beat the shrooboid brat you just have to attack him and kill him. Look on the top screen which is where the target of his attack is decided so you know who should counter or dodge.
Time_Flux - 01.07.06 1:21 am
Most definately one of the funnest games I ever played. It’s not as long Superstar Saga, but it is definately harder. For those who say that the bosses have too much HP, It’s not a problem if you put all your bonus points (leveling up) on Power. I beat the game before, and I played it the second time, doing just that. I defeated the Alien dude with the lolipop at the koopatorium in 2 turns, one with Mario and one with Luigi. And you know when at the near end of the game when the older twin Shroob Princess takes that huge monster form, the first time I battled her, it took me litteraly 2 hours to beat her. That is why this game is harder then the prequel.
Pickleboy - 01.12.06 9:26 am
Alrighty people, my opinion on Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time is phenominal! I can’t believe some of you who have played this actually say this game wasn’t worth your time. I’m surprised.. well, I’m a huuuge Mario fan, so yeah, maybe it’s just since I grew up with every single game and all, that they appeal to me. Anyway, you got to give it some time, overall, the music and graphics are awesome. Storyline has twists all over.
