We all know how vastly important Miyamoto, Kondo, Yamauchi and even Reggie were and are to Nintendo. However, recently one man has been responsible for a revitalizing Nintendo and, in my opinion, getting them back on track. That man is Satoru Iwata.
I think Iwata brings a lot of much needed characteristics to Nintendo. First of all, he is great with the public. He may not be as jovial as Miyamoto, but for the president of such a huge company he is incredibly open and approachable. Totally the opposite of Hiroshi Yamauchi and his iron reign.
Iwata has also intelligently restructured the company. People like Miyamoto were freed up to focus more on creation and less on management. Under Iwata we have also seen the opening of a new Tokyo studio and things like the Nintendo World Store.
Iwata also brings to the table something that a lot of presidents don’t…experience. Iwata wasn’t a banker. He didn’t come from a background in real estate. Iwata was a game developer. He understands gaming. He loves gaming. His “Heart Of A Gamer” speech was probably my favorite game related speech in the last few years.
And of course, Iwata is a devilishly smart business man. He seems to have a very clear vision of where he wants Nintendo to go and thus far his plan is working. He is also strengthening third party support, the likes of which haven’t been seen on a Nintendo console since the SNES.
So, happy birthday Iwata-san. I have no doubt that you will leave a strong mark not only on Nintendo, but the whole gaming industry. Keep up the great work and enjoy your 46th birthday.

Careful there. It was Hiroshi Yamauchi business brillance and great sense of what worked and didnt work that put Nintendo where it is today. He also had the amazing ability to surround himself with the best people out there. He saw the genius in Iwata. He may have been a little crazy and over the top, but Yamauchi is the father of Nintendo and should be respected as such.

It’s funny, he’s 7 years younger than Miyamoto.

You know the head of your company is cool when he’ll just stand around and play videogames with people. Such as the above pic.

Nintendo would have died under Yamauchi’s reign, but wouldn’t be where they are today without it. Iwata’s stepping up is absolutely perfect timing, he’s had 3 years to aim Nintendo’s entire strategy to prepare for the revolution and it’s looking good so far.
DON’T MESS UP NOW MR PINK BLOB LOVER!

There’s some great stuff in the N-Sider Profile, and cool to look back at quotes that baffled you a few years ago that make sense now;
“Perhaps the most telling summary of Nintendo’s online policy can be provided by Iwata himself: “We’re not negative toward the idea of going online. We’re just practical.”
“In a sense, the DS is almost the epitome of Nintendo’s vision for the future, which could explain why Hiroshi Yamauchi had said that Nintendo would be crushed if the machine fails in the market. Of course, if the DS were to fail in the market, this would not be enough to bring down Nintendo itself. However, it would definitely call the company’s overall philosophy into question.”
