The Spanish game site Meristation landed an interview with Jim Merrick, from NOE, he revealed some really interesting information.
Merrick states that the Revolution will be launched everywhere within a 14 week timespan of each other. He also said that no games would be shown before the end of the year.
He also stated that there would be no significant difference between the graphical abilities of the console compared to other next generation systems. And finally he confirmed that the WiFi USB adapter would be compatible with the Revolution.
When speaking of the Revolution’s online features Merrick indicated that it would be possible to play games even if you do not own a copy of the title, as is currently possible with many Nintendo DS titles.
N64 titles played on the Revolution would have improved framerates, but not necessarily improved graphics.
Users from different regions will be able to download content from around the world (an important feature for Europe, where many titles released in the U.S. have never officially been made available).

N64 titles played on the Revolution would have improved framerates, but not necessarily improved graphics
!!!!!!!!!!!!!! best news ever.

Good good news!
We’ll see how those graphical capabilities will hold up… 14 weeks sure is a subtle way of saying 4 months.
Dejital - 11.01.05 12:20 am
Am I the only person who thinks 14 weeks is a LONG time, especially considering us European chumps will most probably be the last to get the Revolution.
Take notes on how the 360 2-week release goes Nintendo!
sammyAD - 11.01.05 12:21 am
YES!! I don’t want improved graphics, I just want 60fps!!! Woohoo
N Rumas - 11.01.05 12:39 am
I can’t wait to download : Goldeneye, Star Fox, Paper Mario, Mario 64, …
Nicol@s - 11.01.05 12:41 am
Is he talking about single disk multiplayer or kiosk style demo downloads?
Sammy12 - 11.01.05 12:44 am
Single disk multiplayer, Like you do with your DS game, send the game to the friend and multiplay
CoffeeMan - 11.01.05 12:49 am
I really beleive that there’s more than the controller, there’s a big revolution secret , the console dowsn’t support HD because it does not need to, games where not shown so far , for one reason , the format is no longer the same, In the last Myamoto interviuew the MAN said “It’s convenient to make games that are played on TVs. But I always wanted to have a custom-sized screen that wasn’t the typical four-cornered cathode-ray-tube TV. I’ve always thought that games would eventually break free of the confines of a TV screen to fill an entire room. But I would rather not say anything more about that. ” , for me it’s clear , Myamoto and Nintendo are on the way to absolute VR, but will it be in the Revo generation !?, why not, the controller is a perfect tool for 3d, a headset is next !?? who knows , I’m expecting anything now, I mean the console is named REVOLUTION for god’s sake, the unreal engine people are talking trash about it, because they’re scared and tehy know that, their time is over, I’m not specultaing but Myamoto himself said it ” the last zelda as we know it ” if it was only a zelda played with the new revo controller it still the same mechanics Right !?? but there’s really more , Nintendo just show the tip of the iceberg like they did with the DS , two screen but noone knew that a screen is touch sensitive !!!, there’s more guys and I’m really excited about that.

14 weeks is a longass time
funtographer - 11.01.05 1:45 am
But the revolution teaser ad’s showed people playing the games on a TV…
But really, you didn’t see the image on the TV, but them turning the TV OFF… Hmmm…
heh.

:x…
Isn’t anybody else excited of that fact that we can download freakin’ imports?
TheOtherPedro - 11.01.05 2:05 am
I’m stoked cuz I’ll be transferred to Japan when the REVO comes out and I can download USA and EURO games instead of just Japanese titles. Not restricted to your countries server~ Sweet!
dj - 11.01.05 3:14 am
so does this mean it’ll be safe to import the revolution?
botteu - 11.01.05 5:53 am
I assume there will be certain limitations to services when you import the console.
The one-disc multiplayer thing has me stoked, though, but I believe it’s only meant for when you bring 2 consoles close together. Would rock in dorms, for example.
fushi - 11.01.05 6:39 am
You could read his words to mean that they will all launch back to back no more than fourteen weeks from each other. In other words Japan first, 14 weeks later US and then Europe 14 weeks after that. Aint that the case now?!

Goldeneye? Perfect Dark? With improved frame rates? Sounds extremely sweet to me.
Tony - 11.01.05 9:46 am
14 weeks is pretty good. The xbox 360 isn’t going to be released here in Australia till March or something… and that’s *with* the MS worldwide launch!
Bender - 11.01.05 10:41 am
I’m sure the one-disc multiplayer will be a hit. Even if it’s just simplified levels, it’ll be a good way to test out new games and play with your friends/random people at the same time.
Downloadable demos would rock hardcore too.
I’m just hoping all this looks as good in person as on paper~
NekoTsukimi - 11.01.05 10:46 am
That ‘technology’ requires a new television set. However Shiggy hints at something like that.
In the future, what do you think video games will be like?
It’s convenient to make games that are played on TVs. But I always wanted to have a custom-sized screen that wasn’t the typical four-cornered cathode-ray-tube TV. I’ve always thought that games would eventually break free of the confines of a TV screen to fill an entire room. But I would rather not say anything more about that.

Note the VGA port on rev as well… I’m not sure if these glasses support augmented reality, but if it is the technology shiggy is hinting at, then yes they do.

Sorry to post again…
“Daeyang’s FMD is a cutting edge technology being developed out of a past HMD (Head mounted display) that had led global market for High quality at right price with a powerful brand, I-Visor. Daeyang’s FMD can make you feel you are put onto the virtual world you want to be, escaping from mediocre life!
The biggest difference between FMD and past HMD is you can hardly Perceive you are wearing something for display. Enjoy your life with a portable multi-application slim glasses.
If you need something new for your life, welcome to the revolution. ”

The 14 week release date doesnt bother me too much. I dont think it will be that far apart. After all the xbox 360 release is at a complete shamble, there is a shortage in the number of Xboxes.
“…due to a lower volume of available Xbox 360 consoles than some analysts were previously estimating, and perhaps indicating there may be more severe Xbox 360 shortages than some have predicted this holiday season.” — Gamasutra
Thus creating a slow sales count and not providing customers with what they want.
But if Nintendo can produce a sufficiant number for each area, then everyone will get what they want.
After all good things happen to those who wait.
TK-409 - 11.01.05 11:36 am
I understand game sharing on the DS — because you’re right next to each other and can talk to each other. How are people supposed to game share when they’re in different houses?
Pakl - 11.01.05 12:01 pm
DynamicStability - one of the technologies doesn’t necessarly require a new TV. It’s called the Opticality Filter, which is basically a filter you put over a normal 2D display (but only flat-panel LCD or plasma, which would require a new TV for most).
I doubt we’ll see anything like this on the Revolution, but I wouldn’t put it past the next next-gen.
SithLord - 11.01.05 12:04 pm
I’m all for throwing my firstborn at Nintendo’s altar whenever they release news, but not releasing any screens until after this year is really disappointing
Granted this year only has two months left, but I really just wanted to see something tangible. I don’t care if they released Photoshopped screens I just want to have something
JFK90787 - 11.01.05 12:23 pm
That’s really strange. Why not talk about it?! Come on! ‘But I would rather not say anything more about that.’ = wtf?!
But come on, people. Visit the planet Earth soon! Virtual reality is highly unlikely, especially in the form of glasses/visers. And that 3D screen thing-y? I think the Revolution price would be aimed at $200, not $2000!
zooba - 11.01.05 12:26 pm
…yeah a headset is more that an eventuality, Nintendo had already some experience in the field with vurtual boy, myamoto said that the last innovation was 3d gaming ” innovation ‘ , now we’re talking about a ” Revolution” !!!! , at this point I wouldn’t be surprised at all if the next nintendo announcement will be a VR headset, old games ( nes, snes, n64, gc) will be played on a TV but REVO games on the VR headset, this would explain why REvo doesn’t support HD, simply because it’s obsolete there’s no need of a tv anymore !!!, the Nintendo On video was a viral ad from Nintendo just to see how people would react to something like this, there’s noway that one person could create such a video in a month period “Impossible”!!, it’s a fake video but it ’s from nintendo, the reason why nintendo did not show any game footage is really simple it’s impossible to show it in a square screen or a video , you need to experience it , my guess is E3 2006 will be huge, a turning point for video gaming, the two other rival consoles will look so obsolete and pointless.
MaCrAmaN - 11.01.05 12:29 pm
“He also stated that there would be no significant difference between the graphical abilities of the console compared to other next generation systems.”
Exactly. The difference in potental graphical power matters little to how well a system will sell (Ex. PS2 had the worse graphics but sold the most. Simply compare Resident Evil 4, PS2 and GCN). Also, seeing the recent screenshots from XB360 and PS3, the difference between current-gen, and next-gen is not very dramatic. As Nintendo has stated before, it is no longer a battle for the number of pixels. It is a battle for the best gaming experience.
On another note, it is also not a battle on who can stuff the most crap in a system (i.e. Extra functions, Media Players).
yanipheonu - 11.01.05 12:31 pm
To answer PAKL’s question:
Suppose you could DS download games from the rev… you’d get demos and even full games on it!
yanipheonu - 11.01.05 12:47 pm
CoffeeMan, no offense is meant by this in any way, but the English in this post is horrendous, and very unprofessional. I know this is just a news blog and all, but you should really proof-read these things and make sure they sound good / make sense… before they go public.
Ex: “The Spanish game site Meristation landed an interview with Jim Merrick, from NOE, he revealed some really interesting information.”
This is a bad run on sentence. You shouldn’t string completely separate thoughts together with commas.
Ex: “He also said that no games would be shown before the end of the year.”
Please don’t list every line with “He also stated, he also said, he also confirmed” — we know who you are talking about. Please give us just the facts.
Finally, we don’t need the divider “And here are the interesting parts of this interview”, the whole interview provides really interesting and new information. The following statements are no different.
This may be kind of a picky request, but I (and others that I have asked) find the poor language really distracting. This kind of journalistic writing shows *extremely* low quality, and really drives people away from returning to this site for news and etc. Just thought I’d give you guys a heads up, because nobody has bothered to say something about it yet. Other than little things like this, 4cr seems great. Keep up the coverage.
Goemon - 11.01.05 1:02 pm
Yu now - I didn;t even notie the bad gramer in tha post.
Seriously though, it’s a blog not an online journal or corporate news site. I’m just glad they are getting the info to us quickly, I could care less about misspelled words or bad grammer. I’m sure that Coffeeman and others have jobs or school and do this in their free time. Give them a break.
SithLord - 11.01.05 1:39 pm
Well, I have to take partial responsibility for the quality of the posts. I am the main editor and I usually jump in and spell check and make sure all the grammar is right, but Ive been away from the computer for the last 2 days. Things should be in order now.
Coffeeman and Kreven both speak French as thier primary language, so youll have to cut them some slack.
Nick - 11.01.05 1:55 pm
Well, it’s been corrected to be just fine. Nice fix.
vakerorokero: PlayStation fanboys? First of all, please don’t assume I am a boy.
Come on… Grow up, you don’t even know who I am. I have never really owned a PlayStation, Xbox, or even a Sega system for that matter. I’m a Nintendo fan through and through.
I don’t have “too much time on my hands” ither. I made an innocent suggestion concerning post quality as a reccomendation to HELP the site, but it seems there is a bit of immaturity. Might wanna see if you folks can get that under control too, or you’ll push even more potential people than myself away from the site and community.
Maybe I should just go back to reading Kotaku or something…
Well, since I knocked the conversation off topic, I’ll consider it my responsibility to get it back on. I never intended on starting anything.
Merrick claims that we’ll be able to download old game content from other regions. Where does the ESRB stand in this? Can they rate games in other languages? Will they be rating the downloadable games at all? My head is spinning trying to figure this one out. I’d love to download games in the Famicom Detective series on my Revolution, but will those types of things even show up?
Goemon - 11.01.05 2:38 pm
I won’t try and be a ‘grammar Nazi’ but come on, good grammar is useful and doesn’t take much effort. Would you like to see posts in text language?
zooba - 11.01.05 2:42 pm
very good point on the ESRB GOEMON. I doubt Nintendo will go this route, but they could always use the disclaimer that ESRB rating changes when playing downloadable games - similar to the way it changes when playing games online.
I wonder if the Revolution will be region free for actual Revolution games.
SithLord - 11.01.05 3:14 pm
I tnihk tihs is vrey good nwes!
Dieing to see some games for the Revolution! Tons of screens after new year, I hope!

Benny - 11.01.05 4:07 pm
you should also consider this is a worldwide site. not everyone speaks english as their first language. Telling everyone to gramatically write well or don’t write at all seem offending for international users. Kotaku? isn’t that site japanese? Then don’t even allow comments. You should come to this site for the information and the ability to offer your opinion on something not on the subject. I myslef speak spanish as my first language, so I’m sorry if my sentences aren’t correctly written. Can you point towards a site which can offer me some advice on english expressions and spelling of technical words? Thanks. I mean, Than you very much señorita.
vakerorokero - 11.01.05 6:04 pm
Guys, I think you’re taking this a little bit too serious. Try not to attack each other, just take the site for what it is and enjoy it whenever possible. Flame each other in the forums if needed
This is really exciting news though, right? I’ve been thinking about the possibilities all day.

dj - 11.01.05 8:27 pm
Wow, being french as my primary language and writing this article at 1am didn’t help out I guess.
But that won’t stop me from posting. if they want to complain they can go check another site. What brings people here is the community
CoffeeMan - 11.01.05 8:53 pm
“http://www.opticalitycorporation.com/
I have a buddy who is convinced this technology is what the real revolution is behind the revolution. ”
I seriously doubt this would ever happen. The reason is that it’s stereoscopic images. Stereoscopic stuff is really cool to look at, but it would be too hard to change focus to other planes and such. If your wondering what stereoscopic stuff is a few years back you could buy posters and stuff with it. There’s also the magic eye books. you have to cross your eyes to see it. This would be a very bad idea for video games, especially since alot of people have problems seeing them and not to mention that the colors are not part of the game only part of the screen.
Virtual reality headsets maybe, but I still think that will only be optional mainly because of the price but also because of the stigma associated with the virtual boy whether or not any similarities really exist.
Syril Ram - 11.01.05 9:01 pm
“I’ve always thought that games would eventually break free of the confines of a TV screen to fill an entire room.” - Shiggy.
Maybe his thoughts aren’t to do with changing the display. Maybe the display is just being used for a different purpose. A simple example might be the use of the screen as a scorecard for two people duelling against each other with the new wand.
Or maybe not.
Sammy12 - 11.01.05 10:45 pm
well i can’t remember where i read that, but what if you could have something on you that you could shoot the other player, like laser tag
CoffeeMan - 11.01.05 11:12 pm
And, why not, simply, a videoprojector inside the revolution ? Notice how the photos never show the back pane. I doubt given the place, that would be feasible. But that would be great !
(Why not an air jet for making wind also. Lovely when riding a horse on the next Zelda for example ! ;D )
