Welcome to the Halloween edition! Lots of treats in store for you. Vinnk turns in another awesome Rebel in Japan, this time about Better English Through Games. DSgamer21 lightens the scary mood with a little music from Link’s Awakening and the Roundtable returns the scream about Storytelling In Games. Maybe that could be considered more of a trick! Mwahahaha.
Also, you will now find a timeline for the entire podcast below. That way you can skip around without missing anything.

Thanks for the timeline… that really helps! Sometimes I don’t have the time to listen to the entire roundtable, and would rather skip ahead to the other parts. Thanks!

Here is a link to the site with the KOF cannon and other fighters, it looks like it’s down right now, don’t know when it’ll be up.

Rebel in Japan… that is always one of my favorite segments. It was brilliant this week!
Jonathan - 10.31.05 12:58 pm
Hahaha… I didn’t play DOA Beach Volleyball either, but I’m pretty sure whoever did never really cared much for the volleyball.
As always, the other segments are great. Awesome roundtable this week!

You guys forgot to mention Castlevania when talking about story in platform games.

I’ve just finished hearing Rebel in Japan and I have to tell you that I learned most of my english from video games. Thats because of a couple of things. 1. they don’t translate all games to German language. Today it happens only rarely and only with games that have no story (Doom 3 was not translated) but older games never were German. 2. Finding german roms of SNES games or finding german illegal new games on the internet is very hard. Not impossible but it will take you significantly longer. And 3. Multiplayer is always english. Sometimes you even speak english with another German player just because you forgot that “from?” at the beginning of the game. If that happens you always find out that you could have spoken german all the time just before the game ends or you are about to leave the game.
Probably going to post another comment when I’ve finished hearing the whole thing…

When talking about story you said that some games allowed you to hop in and just play but others immerse you in the story… and said that those games create their memorable moments differently. Well PC games have been doing both for years. And im sure a lot of console games, too. (Tony Hawk comes to mind, but thats for both Console and PC…) For example Warcraft 3. Still the #1 strategy game online. It has a great story and a great campaign to play through. It had a great addon which continued the story (and made the connection to World of Warcraft) and had even more great gameplay. But if u want to you can just go ahead and play a game against a computer AI. Also the game has probably the best multiplayer in the world. And it has probably the best editor in the world which allows you to create your own content very easily. As a result of this there is TONS of TONS of TONS of content online. (I don’t think people live long enough to download and play all of that. And that is not an exaggaration)
You talked about memories about games to support your points. And in fact when I thought about memories in Warcraft 3 the first thing that came to my mind was the intro movie of the addon. So story is definitely a big point of the game. But the next thing that came to my mind was that mana-burn-kill with only 4 mana burned in the middle of a HUUUGE battle. (if u know the game you know that this is extremely rare, and even more rare in the middle of a HUUUGE battle, and to some extent hilarious) I think I saw that on waaaghTV… So it was definitely multiplayer and shows that the game creates memorable moments not only from its story but also from its gameplay.
So I don’t think you can differentiate as much as you guys did. It’s definitely possible for a game to create both.

Possible, of course it is, but how often is a game like that actually turned out? It’s very seldom that a game actually properly blends the two methods of memorable moments to create a really awesome experience.
And I’m not sure as I’ve only played WC3 a few times(not much of an RTS fan), but from my own observations as well as what I hear from my myriad of friends who passionately play it, it really sounds like more of a gameplay memorable moment type of game. I’ve played through a lot of the single player campaign, but I never really think back to scripted events nor do I hear about them talked about among other fans. I’m not saying that the story was bad, it was more than sufficient, but it definitely took second chair to gameplay events(as it should have).
hokku - 10.31.05 2:59 pm
Before Warcraft 3 it was Starcraft… see a trend? games from blizzard
And i have to Agree the campaign in WC3 is one of the Best, loved it. and i love what they added in frozen throne through an update, you played has the Horde Hero guy, that you see walking in Desolace in World of Warcraft
I went and played through WC3 and WC:FT after quitting WoW and it was really better than the first time I played through, as you can say ooh i remember being here, and ahhh this is why that’s like that in WoW.
CoffeeMan - 10.31.05 5:09 pm
Once again, no other podcast has as much personality as this one. Wonderful as always.
robotplague - 11.01.05 3:40 am

Yet again, another awesome podcast.
