Alright, lots of good stuff happened in gaming this week. The podcast has also seen some changes this week. We have our first roundtable this time and it was pretty fun. A few technical problems, as some of the mics sound a little off, but weve already resolved that issue for next week. Also, sorry I sound so dead. I recorded my parts after the Revolution controller unvieling and I was getting sleepy. Ah well, no rest for the wicked.

Super Mario Turns 20

I’m 10 minutes through it and it’s quite good. This one seems to be quite long, but I really liked the Mario segment. Do do do doo dodo dooo!

Awesome stuff. That Roundtable just keeps on going, eh?
Rogultgot - 09.19.05 12:10 pm
I’m sorry, but who was the “you can’t not copy a controller” guy? That was ignorant. Very, very ignorant. The D-pad WAS a unique feature at the time - just look back at everything else. A D-pad is NOT a default necessity for a controller.
Otherwise - still by far the best gaming podcast. Everything else I’ve tried to listen to has sounded like a pair of Atari Fatties in the mothers’ basements talking over a bad Skype connection and choking down Cheetos while going HOMPHGLOMPH X-STATION LOLS PLAYBOX 240 YOU KNOW WHAT WOULD BE COOL WOULD BE IF THEY MADE A GAME WHERE YOU COULD FUCK PRINCESS PEACH LOLLERSAUR. You guys actually sound good and like you actually know what you’re talking about, and it’s fucking excellent.

A little less profanity might be in order, Tetsuo
Thanks for all the compliments though.

Even though this podcast is still at it’s infancy I am continually impressed. The quality really is top notch even more so then some podcasts that have been around for a while now. Seriously, great stuff, I really enjoyed it. I think this podcast is going to blow up, can’t wait for the next one.
robotplague - 09.19.05 1:15 pm
Man that roundtable wasn’t about Nintendos secrecy at all, but I listened to all of it either way, because that was actually a great discussion.
Sagan - 09.19.05 1:45 pm
I’m a little confused, is the 4cr podcast suppose to be a source of gaming news/journalism? Or fan service/fiction? I find the use of very subjective words like “nice,” “cool,” “been with us all the way”… and the amount of highly personal tangents really hard to focus on and take seriously.
The track from Katamari was spot on though.
Good pick.

TetSuo, That was me. Yes the D-pad is a unique feature, but i was just pointing out that yes it was innovative, and most, if not all, controller that came after it had a D-Pad of some sort. I mean on every controller you have to have something to make your character move and then buttons for basic action.
Sagan, yeah listening to it again after the recording, I notice we didn’t really stay on the subject
but trust me next one we will

Another great cast! I’m getting hooked on that tune that is played at the very end. What is that tune?
SavageS - 09.19.05 2:33 pm
Well, we by no means try to pretend this is some sort of professional endevor. We are just having fun and talking about the big stories of the week. Besides, this podcast is just getting off the ground, so we are still figuring out what exactly it is. Your guuys feedback will help us steer this new ship and make it better.

^^ The outro music is taken from a Genesis game called “Shadow of the Beast”.

The roundtable was an excellent addition to a growing podcast. I can’t wait for the next one.
Hamblasto - 09.19.05 4:21 pm
too long. keep short and sweet
bob - 09.19.05 4:50 pm
Blame it on Coffeeman. He said the whole point of a podcast is so you can put it on your ipod and listen to it while your walking around or running errands. So its good if its long. Lol.
Naw, we didnt intentionally try to make it long. We just really like hearing ourselves talk.
Nick - 09.19.05 5:02 pm
I actually liked the length. Made it much better.
I still think what you need is an overall roundup of the weeks news. Before recording, go through the entire week’s posts and pick out -any- game news. Don’t have to spend long talking about it, but I think you should just start off with a recap of what’s happened. Maybe even just reading ‘headlines’ for some. A ‘this week in gaming’ section, if you will.

SHUSHU, I can see what you mean. It is not highly objective. I guess that is the nature of a site that is devoted mostly to one platform, in this case Nintrendo. As for the highly personal speech (and I am the most guilty of that), a part of this podcast was reserved for tributes to Super Mario on his 20th anniversary. These were to be personal recollections of the series. I apologize if it came off that I was doing an factual piece on the anniversary and just started ranting. It was meant as a rant to begin with. Yeah, this site is made of people who love or at least like Nintendo, but it is also a group of fairly intelligent gamers who will call Nintendo on any weakness it shows. Thank you very much for your feedback. I hope that clarified things a bit.
Vinnk - 09.19.05 7:21 pm
Dude, Vinnk, you’ve got nothing to apologize for–that’s wicked geeky rant on Mario. You’ve got me crackin up man. Burned a Sonic doll. Ha. You were worse than me
N Rumas - 09.19.05 8:59 pm
:D Happy birthday Mario!!
Been with me also for quite a time!
And I´ve tried several Sonic games…all of them just don´t deliver

Thanks from a Nintendo-head with seeking entertainment whilst driving 1.5 hours home from work on a Monday evening in DC. Very entertaining. Screw the critics.
hibiscusroto - 09.20.05 10:40 am
That was the best podcast yet. I love your Japanese correspondent, you need to keep him involved! I loved his story.
The 20 year Mario walk down memory lane was excellent.

Here is my feedback:
I definately think you need a semi-regular segment where you get together and discuss a topic. Maybe every month, have a roundtable. I also like hearing about your personal experiences, they add something different and don’t alienate me as a listener.
Keep up the gaming news round-up. I think to keep some people happy, report the news and have discussion after all the news read out. That might be hard to accomplish, and I am not sure if it is even possible. News about the site is good to, I like hearing results from Trivia and the AW online tournament - even if I don’t participate in them.
And definately keep the editorials and opinion pieces. These are fantastic and done very well, I enjoyed Otorock’s piece last week on the possibilites of gamer created worlds.
I think your target audience is heavily retro as well - judging by some of the comments. Why not do a ‘This day in history…’ sort of segment. Go beyond the usual editorial pieces and give us something unique. Analysis of the critical failures of Nintendo and Sega are not interesting. I like hearing about the future, even if it is from your viewpoint and I like learning about the 8 and 16 bit days. I missed out on all that. Highlight some favourites or something.
Keep up the great work!!
