Miyamoto On Rev Controller

[Now Playing| Meteos - DS]

It seems like Nintendo has started talking about the Revolution a bit more lately. Also, with the Tokyo Game Show coming in September we might be pretty close to finally knowing the truth. Anway, check out a few new comments by Miyamoto.

Miyamoto says that Nintendo has created such a controller. Asked about all the secrecy surrounding the new controller design, he says, ‘Graphic chips are one thing. Those are hard to imitate. But if we showed our controller, we’d be revealing way too much. It’s very easy to copy. We really want to present our interface, the controller, with software as a package.’

Nuggets like this won’t do it for me. I want to know everything now, but at the same time I know the consequences of revealing it too early.

There’s an information drought in the Nintendo camp. I guess ’tis better than naught

I wonder if this means it’ll be possible for 3rd party controllers for the xbox & playstation to imitate the design of the Nintendo controller…

Mario 128 never existed.

He’s lying! Shoot him! QUICK!

360 and zPS3 have already shown their crap; how are they going to copy the Revolution? I think Nintendo is trying to get its shit together because it’s not as good as they say.

Why am I starting to think the Revolution controller will not be so revolutionary?

I can wait.
I’d rather not know about the controller untill after Microsoft and Sony plans are set so they can’t copy the technology for themselves or it’ll take them a year to figure out how.
After seeing Sony’s controller at E3 I just get a nasty feeling that they were planning on copying what ever Nintendo was going to release.

I think the article was a good read, I like hearing designers talking about how they came up with an idea. Exploring the creative process is just fascinating, personally anyway.

The comment about the shoulder buttons was interesting. I remember reading that they were digital buttons and offered different levels of control. The example given was controlling a jet and using the shoulder buttons to control thrust, depressing the button the whole way would mean the after-burner would kick in. I found that pretty intrigiuing, but like Shigsy said nothing really came of it.

the revolution console is due in a whole year it’s obvious that’s too early for a hardware details release for one reason, IT’S NOT DONE YET !!!!!! and about sony cstealing the new concept, there is a solution called PATENT.

N/A

Bender on July 28, 2005 at 11:54 am

0_0 a PATENT is used to protect NEW ideas. Nintendo has repeatedly said that the controller adapts technology that already exists into the gaming environment, therefore a patent is useless.

w0rstnitmr on July 28, 2005 at 11:56 am

Besides which, Sony has yet to lock in specs, controller, etc. which means they very well could take it. (RUMBLE? ANALOG STICK, ANYONE?)

o_O on July 28, 2005 at 1:06 pm

Bender , the patent is for a new product , the rev controller will be a group of existent tech and the whole package can be patented .

You guys shouldn`t expect anything crazy about the rev controller. Think about it, they want a simple easy to use controller, but it can still play all the previous nintendo systems. They can`t do a crazy design with that. And the controllers are gonna be wireless, so you can’t have rumble+touchscreen+gyro+whatever other gimmic. Don’t get your hopes to high for a crazy remote, that’s all I’m saying. :P

I think some of the Revolutions new ideas will be subtle. Mostly, they are keeping silent because they want the PS3’s current controller to finalize first. I think what Sony threw out at E3 was a “dummy” design. Sony was hoping Nintendo would show off the Rev controller, so they could change their design. But, if all goes well, the PS3 controller will come back and smack Sony in the face by forcing them to stick that way.

simon on July 28, 2005 at 2:40 pm

i think the ps3 controller is probably final, and that it’s fan-boy logic that creates ideas of “Sony is TOTALLY desperate to rip off nintendo!”

N/A

w0rstnitmr on July 28, 2005 at 2:58 pm

Well…..they’ve done it before….

N/A

Dejital on July 28, 2005 at 3:16 pm

Sony’s not desperate. Playstation is the biggest console out there, litterally and figuratively. Half of Japanese gamers said they’re getting a PS3, only ten percent are going Nintendo. The good thing about Playstation is that it appeals to all genres, that’s why it’s such a success. If Nintendo invents a new genre, Sony’s gonna need to stick on their console too.

i’m sorry to say that but the revo is nintendo’s last bullet if it will not be A REAL REVOLUTION , well i’m afraid that will go back to just making handhelds like the old days. sorry to be so pessimist but it still a whole year and who knows….. may be

tratch on July 28, 2005 at 4:52 pm

Yes, the only gaming company out of the big 3 to consistently turn a handsome profit will go out of business if their new system does not live up to your expectations.

no body said that nintendo will be bankrupt, but my dream is to see the revolution lead the console market, not to be the second or the third , even if they are the best .

N/A

Pikachelsea on July 28, 2005 at 9:36 pm

I wish Nintendo would just announce something so unbelievable and mindblowing that it made everyone a believer again. Nintendo was once synonymous with videogames… if only they could recapture the market they created.

As for the controller, I’m anxious to see it but a little surprised that Miyamoto thinks it will be so easy to copy. Sony and Microsoft have already proven that they have no qualms about copying Nintendo’s ideas (wireless controllers, rumble, analog, etc), so I hope Nintendo has some kind of plan to prevent this from happening.

N/A

SavageS on July 28, 2005 at 10:25 pm

I imagine Nintendo knows that their good ideas will be taken; they’ll just get to market with them first!

vakerorokero on July 29, 2005 at 1:20 am

who cares what this guys think! If you like Nintendo fine! if you like sony fine! who cares if sony beats nintendo? as long as nintendo makes a profit from their products the fans are going to get what they wants. Sony sells millions of playstations and even then makes more money out of Gran Turismo. I for one, I’m buying a Revolution just to play the Nintendo games I love, I don’t care whatever new controller they got as long as they keep makin marios and zeldas, if they choose to add something new to their controller even better!! sony, like it did with it’s controller is going to add whatever technology Nintendo bring to the table, in one of their updated consoles, I can’t believe people think Sony brought Rumble and Analog sticks to gaming!! analog stick were the ataris way of playing!! the rumble was in development since the born of the gameboy!! The only thing saving Nintendo is not their controller or whatever kooky things some people are thinking, is their characters and they fun games even if they choose to keep mario on everything instead of making new characters, everything would still sell. Sony has EA to make their best sellers and the Gran Turismo 5 which probably will come out near 2009 and the ultra censored new GTA which thanks to some strange marketing will probably get nixed after the codes for the “hot coffee and a bun 6″ come out. Xobx will always have halo to make some revenue to their almost empty pockets from all their XBOX 2099 losses.

Just buy games from whichever you like. don’t brag about owning a console that sells better than someone else’s because, you know, no one cares. I don’t care if Coca Cola sells better than Pepsi, I like Dr. Pepper which may not be the most popular soft drink everyone buys, but I like it, and as long as I see it at stores, I’ll keep buying it, the day they don’t make it anymore, I’ll search for something else, maybe Clear Pepsi.
