4cr Database Problems

Alright, lets talk about 4cr for a minute. As Im sure youve all noticed, the site has been going down a lot lately. In fact, it seems like its down more than its working. I originally thought the problem was WordPress. Now, I dont think so. I also thought the problem was my database, but now I dont think so.

I think the real problem is that someone is crawling the site and killing it. Up until about 2 weeks ago, even with huge spikes in traffic I never had a problem with the load on my database. Now its happening almost daily.

The most recent outage was simply a weird problem with my server…they decided to change my database password. Thanks guys.

Anyway, if anyone knows anything about mySQL databases, php functions and/or WordPress and would be willing to help out, please let me know. I love this site and all my readers and I dont want to upset people, lose people or go insane because of this.

The thought of some hacker idiot intentionally destroying a site, especially one as significant as this, enthralls me. I would hate to lose this site.

I dont know much about SQL or PHP, my expertise is HTML and photopshop…but I will use my psychic powers to explode the culprit’s brain!

Its probably a MS or Sony fanboy that is trying to hack you. …Which is ridiculous because this site has never said anything bad about either Sony or MS… except… the ps3 grill thing I posted.. DAMN!!

Well, if it helps, I’m really patient, and I keep trying back.

I work with MySQL and PHP a lot, though my real expertise is in Java and C++. I visit this site several times a day, though I don’t post much. If you’re still looking for some help, I would be more than happy to look into your problems. Contact me at confusatron[aatt]gmail.com, where [aatt] equals @ (gotta watch out for those spiders). I figure it’s the least I can offer in return for all the info I have gleaned from this site! :)

I’ll give my web-obsessed friend who also helps maintain a site a shout, so he can work out what could be happening.

You should use the support forum at wordpress.org/support. The people there are very helpful. You might find there are plugins available that help with restricting IPs that are hammering you. Check out codex.wordpress.org as well. You should be able to find a solution that uses Wordpress to solve the problem.

You might be running an older version of WordPress that has some sort of security holes in it. I would take a look at http://www.wordpress.org, see if the latest version is the same one you are running, and, if not, upgrade.

Thanks everyone. Im running the latest version of wordpress already and have been in contact with people on the WP forums, which has been very helpful. Ive also learned a lot about databases during this ordeal, so thats good. I think I have the problems resolved. Ill have to wait and see if something else pops up though.

Popular sites often get on botlists for “referral spamming.” They’ll sometimes hit a site several times a minute, or once every few seconds. Maybe a spambot was battly configured and ended up mashing the site?
