The Meaning Of 4 color rebellion

[How the name came to be and what it means today]

Since the birth of this site as a video game resource, Ive asked myself what ’4 color rebellion’ means. You see, originally the site was a comic book site. Or, it was going to be.

Comics are commonly referred to as 4-color books. This is because of the printing process used to print comics, or any printed media for that matter. Almost all printed media is made by combining Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black; CMYK. There are exceptions, but we won’t get into that.

So, this site started off as a way to sound off about the comic book industry. It’s a beautiful industry with such a low cost of entry and such potential for creativity and exposure. That’s where the rebellion part came in. I was out to inform and change the way the industry worked and open peoples eyes to the possibilities of the medium. However, things got jumbled and contributors dropped out. So, since I had already paid for the domain, I just started blogging about Nintendo and here we are today.

Since that time I’ve often asked myself, how does the title ’4 color rebellion’ relate to gaming. I try to bring in other elements to the site, like comics, movies and advertising, but it’s primarily turned into a Nintendo related site. Which is fine, since Nintendo is my most passionate entertainment love.

So, with all of that, what does the site name mean? Well, I look at it many different ways. For one, since we are primarily talking about media that is brought to us on television or the computer monitor, we have escaped the 4 color limitation. A virtually endless number of colors can be used when displaying games. The rebellion issue comes into play in that I hope that I create a positive uprising against biased and ignorant gaming coverage.

Another way I look at it is that ’4 color rebellion’ stands as a blanket statement about media. Let us rebel at shoddy entertainment and advertising. Let our voices be heard about what we want, not want they think we want. Let us, the consumer, have the power to influence the products we buy. Let us inspire intelligent and heartfelt decisions about how our entertainment is executed and presented.

The final way that I look at it is in a way I would have never thought before I got all of you as readers. This site has become much more than just a Nintendo news site for me. It has become a community. A source of intelligent and passionate discussion of things I love. A place where I can talk with my friends and make many new ones.

The rebellion is here. It’s about making connections. It’s about jumping out of the boxes marketers and schemers try to put on us. It’s in finding a common ground and reveling in that. Becoming friends. Making observations and changes to the way society hears us, subjugates us, caters to us and ultimately entertains us.
