Microsoft Mimicking Nintendo?

Apparently the chaps at Engadget think that Microsoft is doing a 180 with its 360 (their pun… not mine)… following Nintendo’s line of thought about gaming in general. I think a snippet from the article says it best:

Microsoft’s positioning has changed as completely and dramatically as one of its new console’s removable faceplates. According to its Xbox executives, it’s (now) not about better graphics. It’s not about better sound (this time). It’s (suddenly) not about more capacity. It’s not about having a custom CPU (or presumably a new graphics processor). It’s not even about the potential Microsoft advantage of launching earlier than your competition. And it’s not about serving as a more affordable Windows Media Center or more powerful Media Center Extender. Surprise, it’s about the games.

The article is pretty bleak about the future of the 360, the author seems to think that without the crazy 3rd party support of the Ps2, the amazing in house games of Nintendo, or the graphics advantage that Xbox had… the 360 has only Xbox Live in its favor.

Me? I think BioWare, Sega, Team Ninja, and Rare are reason enough for me to buy an Xbox 360. That being said… the only reason I own as many Xbox games that I do is that any multiconsole release automatically goes to Xbox because it should be the best looking. Looks like that isn’t the case next generation. These console wars are going to be interesting.

HA! Funny Stuff. But what about Velocity Girl? She wants to build skateparks and sell them to her friends online. (One of their lame examples from their E3 infommercial)

Yes, this next generation will definately be interesting.

Xbox had a nice range of software. Panzer Dragoon Orta, Ninja Gaiden, Psychonauts, Oddworld Stranger, Halo 2, Forza, Dead or Alive Ultimate, etc…

I hope Sony is stopped, but it looks like they will continue to domininate and the videogame industry will head even further into stagnation. My PS1 library is much bigger than my PS2 library. The creativity of the PS1 era has pretty much vanished on PS2. Remember great PS1 games like Parappa or Poy Poy and the massive RPG onslaught? All gone on PS2…

So, does this mean that Nintendo is now a threat to Microsoft again? I mean, they’re jumping into the niche market… right?

Count Olaf on May 26, 2005 at 12:35 pm

nintendo is offering a complete 20 years of game library in the revolution, and a free online play at least for 1st party games and the console will be cheaper than the others systems, and will have fabulous launch tytles may be mario zelda metroid… how could anyone beat that !??, microsoft with its ripoff live !?? or sony with its $500 fridge, I trully beleive that nintendo will be the winner of the next generation.

Oh my god… So that means, microsoft is already sayig it’s going to lose this time?? They can¡ make it with just dead or alives, racing games and halos. That’s what they get for trying t get us all in the “Media Center PC” expensiveness. Instead of bragging they should have tought more about their content and not just third party and now “bring your own music and photos to XBOX360″.

So that makes the MTV 360 special advertisement irrelevant? weren’t they after “the kids that rock” as their market? did it work? I think Microsoft should get back to the drawing board and ge something better for 2007 and not release this thing at all. or better yet. Upgrade the crap ouut of this and lose tons of money so they can have the graphical edge again. and multiplatform games will sell Xboxes like benny said.

It’s sad to actually hear something I’ve always wanted to hear, because Microsoft has been defeated just as the fighters are announced (sounds like a Don king TV match) and Nintendo hasn’t even said what it will be using to fight.

Funny, when Nintendo used rare as their main developer on the N64 they lost their share of the market. And now Microsoft is promoting Rare as their main developer and is already dead. Maybe Rare IS cursed?

Umm, the only thing I got out of that article was that Benny owns an Xbox. Did Nick know this before letting you contribute articles? :)

wow……so microsoft are trying to propose a unique idea…BY COPYING SOMEONE ELSE….. that reminds me of the phrase “i’m unique, just like everyone else!”

my predictions of the next console wars can now be summerised into a sci fi war movie:

THE CONSOLE WARS:
main characters: sony, nintendo
extras: microsoft

synopsis:
WAR! As the jedi….uh i mean…the troops nintendobi wan and sony skywalker head out to battle the dark side, a few seconds into the movie they kill a footman known as count microsoft who made one funny line (nintendo are a niche player) before dying, then the rest of the movie is about how sony skywalker slowly turns to the dark side but realsis he was always destined for masses of power (i think about 2.6 teraflops or something) and he eventually gets cyborg parts (making him as big as a fridge!) while nintendobi wan hides any information (on his whereabouts i mean) until one day he introduces darth sony to a young lad celled iwata skywalker, (NO THEIR NOT RELATED IN THIS) who will bring about a REVOLUTION!!! with some help from their new software, the inter galactic networking system (the IGN sytem) known as gamespy, r2DS, reggi fils-solo, shigaru myabacca and other random characters…

ive gotten slightly off topic but ive come to the conclusion that these console wars are very similar to another kind of movie (hmm i wonder…could sony become good and do the right thing just before dying? could sony and nintendo be related? will r2DS continue to kick ass? at more sales than the PSP i like to think so…

“the 360 has only Xbox Live in its favor.”

And I don’t see what will be so great about Live when Nintendo Revolution owners will be able to use Nintendo’s online services for free, 24/7/365, unlike Xbox Live Silver users.

All Xbox ever had going for it was Halo, and even the quality of Halo is disputed, especially among experienced PC FPS fans. The Xbox would be nothing without Halo.

Lets avoid the horribly written Star Wars analogies. They make me dizzy.

Its Genesis vs. Nintendo all over again!

(loved the star wars analogy!)

yeah nice Starwars story, but I disagree with OCTOROK, the genesis was awsome !! back in the day I couldn’t really make a choice betyween nintendo and sega, they are both great companies and make first quality softwares and hardwares, i’m a nintendo hardcore fan but one of my dreams is to see Sega back again in the hardware market,it could be really intersting, nintendo and sega again, no more walkman makers (sony) and no more softwaremaker (microsoft)…

Hell they may not even have BioWare much longer. BW is still the main developer of KOTOR and they have been said to be bringing the series to PS3 and supposedly LA’s console of choice is also the PS3.

Benny, you have an Xbox? Thats it, youre fired!

But really, I dont see this as being much in the way of news. People are starting to talk about how the PS3 is going to be the most powerful, and Microsoft has been touting figures for months now. Now, its time to move on to whats important. Games. I dont think this is copying Nintendo so much as following a relatively standard path of harware lauch. Well, unless we are talking about Nintendo who doesnt seem to like hyping numbers in the first place.

Here is another article about the next gen game:

CNN Money

James- LA stands for LucasArts

Back on topic:
Looks like it’s just Nintendo and Sony again…
I miss Sega though… They had the only consoles that I desired other than those of Nintendo’s.

spin_cycle on May 26, 2005 at 7:57 pm

yeh i kinda miss sega too (holy crap i never thought i would say that) it didnt realise it then, but back when it was nintendo VS sega it was more of a friendly rivalry kinda thing, like they were both out to please the general consumer first, and second to gain money doing so while agknowlaging that there was compotition, whereas now there are companies like sony and microsift whose main priority it seems is to destroy all other companies, then start to gain as much money as possible and oh yeh theres that whole pleasing the general consumer thing…

What? Microsoft mimicking Nintendo? Using ATI and IBM to build your hardware and having wireless controllers was all Microsoft’s idea!

I trust in Nintendo’s ability to deliver some
of the best games ever and I am thrilled with
how the DS is going. I also think the PS3 has
just as much appeal to the general gamer as
the PS1+2 had and will continue to do well in
that sector. There doesn’t seem to be a point
or market for the 360 this time around.

vakerorokero on May 26, 2005 at 11:33 pm

Yeah, SEGA was big, but somehow I tought it was going to become one of the big software players aftter their defeat on the hardware but most of the games they come up are not good. What happened to it? I remember wanting a Genesis just to play the sega games and wishing for the saturn to be sold in Mexico were Nintendo controlled the market (even the japanese famicom was easier to find than Sega’s products here). Sega is done in the hardware and should get bigger in the software with more quirky games like a Seamen for the DS and the Maracas games they had, so that’s that.

Sony was great, but the thing that made it big was the modchips you could install. Sony didn’t care for the third parties, they only cared for their hardware, you want proof? remember the hardest to copy game in Ps1 history? Sony’s own Legend of Dragoon (which eventually was broken) but Sony knew piracy was the problem for game sellers but hardware sellers, so they tried to get into the Final fantasy bandwagon but making sure everyone’s copy was legal. remember when they released the Ps2? with a button conbination it allowed to make your ps2 multiregion (a first in DVD history) but got a lot of heat for that. It made some controversial (nasty) moves so that made them the 1 in the market. I even remember people saying that Nintendo was death because they are SO worried for piracy of their games. Well, of course! they sell games too! you think if Zelda was free it would have become the best selling game in history?? that title would have gone to Grand Theft auto (the game is original and fun even if they took out the controversial things which were the main selling points, but the graphics were crap…) but 1 of every ten people actually bought that game, and just spread it thru warez and friends. which is sad. Nintendo has been making profits since day one because they actually care for their work, and even they can’t control everything (100 games in 1 for NES and those playstations on the outside and NES inside).

about Microsoft, XBOX360 IS DEAD-ON-ARRIVAL and this comes from inside microsoft!! that’s just silly!! Maybe they should buy Capcom and Konami for must-have sequels, Bandai for the japanese market, and rockstar for americans.

drGherbik on May 27, 2005 at 2:19 pm

1 out of every 10 people actually bought grand theft audio and spread it thru warez? Are you kidding me? Where do you come up with such garbage?
