Wired has an article on its front page that talks about some of the odder Japanese games that are being released in the US.
The article mentions some DS games, namely Nintendogs, Electroplankton, and Phoenix Wright. Gotta love the fact that the DS helping to bridge this cultural gap. I for one couldnt be happier.

It is really nice to see some of these games stateside. It feels like far too many cool NES and SNES games were lost in the past due to the ‘cultural’ divide.

Ah well, I’ve already bought Electroplankton…

I could do with a read of an Enlgish manual though - I’ve had to follow the cheeky little illustrations in the Jap one so far.
And also, Nintendogs was always planned for Europen release, except it’s to be called ‘Puppy Times’ instead - as if we didn’t ‘get’ Nintendogs.

Even though I imported Electroplankton, I will probably pick up another copy to go with my second DS if there have been any “hip-hop” modifications.
You can bet that I’ll be getting Nintendogs (x2) and Phoenix Wright. Even though I could import them as well (due to the DS being region free), I want more of these kind of games to be translated so that the market can grow.

I’m happy to see Nintendo going in this direction.
If you asked me a few months ago, I would have not believed that the US would ever see releases of Fire Emblem GC, Odama, Electroplankton, Another Code/Trace Memory, Meteos, and even Wario Ware Twisted. If you asked me a couple of years ago, I would have laughed at you for thinking we’d ever see Donkey Konga or DK Jungle Beat. Especially considering Nintendo’s history of denying Americans the opportunity games like Sin and Punishment, my doubts were well founded.
What about Chibi Robo?! OMG, I’m happy to know tthat it was shown at E3. It’s such a shame that Homeland probably will never make it over here. While I’m at it, I would pay top dollar for Mother 1+2.
In the mean time, I plan on continuing to give weight to Nintendo’s confidence that these titles will sell. Fire Emblem: Sacred Stones and Wario Ware Twisted are next on my list.
With the Revolution’s virtual backward compatibility feature, I hope that some titles that we missed out on in past generations will be made available for download. I for one, really appreciated that the Master Quest that came on the Wind Waker Bonus Disc.

Don’t forget Trauma Centre! At first I thought a doctor sim would be boring, but in the trailer he’s using some sort of voodoo magic to cure people and that spells all kinds of fun!
I’m really glad to see an indication of Electroplankton coming out here. That game could end up being huge.

I love weirdness

A part of it is to do with our habit of sticking to what we know best. New things come across weird. They’re often challenging to us and we miss the point entirely. I think that process often make us label them as “made for kids”. Japanese audience on the other hand seems to be much more open to new things.
No doubt some of the abovementioned games will be labelled as “for kids” by some over here, simply because they go right over their heads.
