[Rev vs. PS3 vs. 360]

Reading the forums, threads and posts across the net youd think that Nintendo unveiled a big steaming pile of crap, Microsoft, a slightly better looking pile of crap and Sony, a nugget of gold.
Ive seen people making assumptions on the power of the Revolution simply based on its size. ‘It cant be very powerful if its that small.’
Im also amazed to see that people still believe the hype and spin companies put on their systems. PS3 35x more powerful than the PS2? Xbox 360 15x more powerful than the original Xbox? Anyone remember when Sony was claiming the PS2 would do Toy Story level graphics? Or the CG demos Nintendo showed to prove the power of the N64?
The simple fact is, we dont know everything yet. So slow down and take a few deep breaths.
That being said, its sad to see people already attacking Nintendo. I must be missing something. So far the features of the Revolution that have been revealed put it on par with the other next gen systems. Backwards compatibilty, Wifi, wireless controllers, DVD playback, and large 3rd party support.
And there is still one piece of the Revolution puzzle yet to be revealed. While Sony and Microsoft simply redesigned their controllers, I have a feeling we are going to see something special with the Revolution controller.
Believe me, Nintendo is not out of the game, nor out of touch. So please, chill out.

Reading the forums, threads and posts across the net you’d think that gamers are out of touch.
drGherbik - 05.18.05 10:42 am
Actually, reading those Id think that gamers…well, arent games.
Nick - 05.18.05 10:44 am
Especially since the Revolution shown is just the prototype, the actually console will be smaller, could be styled quite different, and may not even be black.
And, IMHO, the most important announcement will be price.
Perhaps the Revolution will be the least powerful of the 3 spec-wise. What if, however, it is easier to code for, and therefore easier to use the full potential? And what if the Revolution is $199 when it releases and XBox 360 and PS3 are much closer to $399? The are so many more factors than great marketing.
And I’m still confused on the PS3, since it is the ugliest thing I’ve seen in a long time, and the controller looks terrible. I’d like to see Sony say “Gotcha” and show us what it will really look like…
Kearns - 05.18.05 10:45 am
yeah I agree. I don’t understand where these people are coming from. Until I know everything about revolution I am not going to leap to conclusions. Some of the people of course want to make those leaps because they have something against nintendo.
Nintendo’s biggest focus right now is the DS, and as far as it goes am I really happy. They needed to make mario kart online, and I had doubts, but they did it.
There is a new mario bros title, and metroid prime hunters is looking better than ever. I cheered when I learned that another code was coming to the states. They are taking a chance releasing electroplankton here… thank you.
3rd parties are making some very interesting games for ds- Capcom’s Phoenix Wright, Konami’s Lost in Blue, and Atlus’ Trauma Center spring to mind. I also can’t wait to get a copy of Nintendogs.
Almost all of these games are unconventional and I applaud nintendo for making it happen.
Just knowing that by the end of the year you can be playing animal crossing and mario kart online should make you smile.
the new zelda seems to be what many people dreamed about.
Bull True - 05.18.05 10:50 am
Well said. I’ll definitely be reserving judgement on the next generation until they’re all for real and ready to be sold to me.
Granted I haven’t turned into a Nintendo-hater, so I’m inclined to give them a chance. From what I read everywhere, the rest of the net is just waiting for Nintendo to die. I’d have thought gamers would want to support all great game makers because it just keeps our whole pastime fresh.
prophet - 05.18.05 11:01 am
I agree. I’m the most excited about Revolution, although it was nice to hear that XBox will have _some_ backwards compatibility. I think that Nintendo will come in cheaper for sure, and that is a major plus. Also, being able to play DVDs, full backwards compatibility… I was wondering, though, what about DK Bongos? Will we be able to use those on Revoltuion?
Trevor - 05.18.05 11:04 am
I’m excited about all three, but…I wish nintendo would of revealed more.
What really scares me is what the price of these consoles are going to be.
PitaMan - 05.18.05 11:08 am
I wish Metroid Prime Hunters was online…..damnit!
Matt - 05.18.05 11:20 am
well , for me ven for a proto, the revolution design is perfect, small simple and stylish, the tech specs..well the fact that Itawa said we gonna say WOW when we see the graphics, is enough for me, and may nintendo found a way to handle better graphics with less powerful hardware, I know it sounds insane, but it is my area of expertise , and there is some theories about that but nothing have been done yet because you know hardware makere have to sale their stuff, anyway may be nintendo finally cross this boundaries and developed this kind of technology……may be
SILVERSURFER - 05.18.05 11:22 am
Trevor, you can see the GameCube controller ports here: http://www.nintendo.co.jp/n10/e3_2005/revo/
No room for Wavebird though.
TechVW - 05.18.05 11:23 am
The Wavebird would work just fine in there. The flat part of the controller slot is the top, so the Wavebird reciever would stick up on the side that doesnt have the cover panel.
Nick - 05.18.05 11:26 am
i beleive they use the same tech from the wavebird for the new controllers so, the wavebird will works just fine without the receiver…
SILVERSURFER - 05.18.05 11:27 am
they said they’d use the broadcom technology for the controller, in the press conf.
well that’s the way i understand it
CoffeeMan - 05.18.05 11:45 am
Well said.
The Cube has the least powerful specs out of the current gen consoles, but has the most beautiful games I’ve ever seen.
I’m sure the Revolution will have beautiful games.
Sadly, you can’t expect one E3 conference to change the current gaming climate. Gamers will continue to slam Nintendo for quite some time. I believe that only the launch of the system and some games previews will start to sway the bias.
John - 05.18.05 11:52 am
Hear Hear.
what ive heard from nintendo recently just sounds amazing. I cant wait for all this wonderful stuff to come out.
Ghostly - 05.18.05 12:06 pm
I’ll admit I was a little disappointed immediately after the show, but after having time to sit with it I feel like Nintendo did the right thing this time around. Let the XTREME BADBOYS duke it out and play it cool. Rev doesn’t come out until next year, and 2005 isn’t even half over. There’s plently of time.
They only showed what they did of the Revolution because they needed to show SOMETHING. Zelda looks great, wireless DS looks great; I am pumped for what Ninty’s got to offer in the coming months. Everyone’s rushing this gen out the door, but it’s still pretty strong! We’ve got some great stuff coming!
aechris - 05.18.05 12:17 pm
If Nintendo had launched a system 10 times more powerful than the PS3, people would have simply said that they are trying to overcompensate for the lack of games. They would have changed their tune and claimed that power means nothing and it’s all about game choice, which Sony offers best, yadda, yadda. In the end, anything Nintendo could have done would have been the target of the harshest criticism.
Why? Simply because the majority of people don’t want to admit they don’t enjoy playing video GAMES anymore, and likely never really did. They want to experience things that immitate what they see in movies and TV: hence driving fast cars, fighting people, and shooting people. Nintendo offers almost exclusively the opposite. People don’t like things that take them out of their comfort zone or make them think, hence their distaste for everything Nintendo. At least, that’s how I see it.
Shawn - 05.18.05 12:20 pm
Interesting thing about the ability to play classic games on Revo. Gamers who grew up with Nintendo are now at the age where they have, or soon will have, children. It’s common practice to re-release toys from the parents’ childhood at that moment (like Cabbage Patch Kids coming back, for instance). So, imagine a parent having his/her favorite classic games a download away for the familty to play. Not such a bad idea…
Shawn - 05.18.05 12:25 pm
I don’t things are that bad, I’m seeing alot of excitement about the Rev, and alot of doubt on the legitamecy of the PS3’s claims (and alot of “360 looks current gen”). We’re not in bad shape guys.
Dom Pezzuto - 05.18.05 12:38 pm
I agree with you 100% Nick.
Zork - 05.18.05 12:44 pm
No the PS2 has the least powerful specs out of the current gen
I think it was a really good move of Nintendo to show more of the Rev, it may of gotten lost in the mix of all of the new Consoles, I think Nintendo may be doing another Space World this year, and they will reveal more of it then.
flamecondor - 05.18.05 12:56 pm
Thanks for the links about the controller ports. I love the idea of Nintendo releasing old games, but will you be able to save them? I read something about SD memory cards?
Trevor - 05.18.05 1:42 pm
I beg all of you to read the stories in that link Nick posted on the e3 page:
http://mozlapunk.web-log.nl/log/2574674
READ THAT!
It seems very true. And nintendoon.com registered by Reggie? Yep.
Looks like something big is going to happen. Something BIG.
Kerry - 05.18.05 2:14 pm
nintendoon was NOT registered by Reggie.
This baseless rumor stops now.
http://www.enom.com/domains/whois.asp?DomainName=nintendoon. com
Reread the title of this page if you have any more questions.
zigg - 05.18.05 2:23 pm
Yeah. Right. Because i’m sure that Cheif Executives at Nintendo register domains in their own name.
Please. Give us all a break.
drGherbik - 05.18.05 2:30 pm
Did you read the article? Go to the last page and read the comments.

OH, and sorry for another post, but I forgot to add this:
And why does it link to ign???
Kerry - 05.18.05 2:36 pm
Man. You is dumb. I mean seriously. I’m sure its nice to dream, but this is all garbage. Let it go.
drGherbik - 05.18.05 2:57 pm

Well, it just seemed legit.
My fanboyism is just kicking in too much.
I’m sorry.

If you put the address from that whois into google…
It seems to belong to “Inn Between Steak and Seafood”. it happens to be on the Roxbury’s list of suggested resteraunts! ^_~
It also matches this cruise service (why would you take a cruise to the North Pole?) http://www.traveldir.com/cruise/site/1949
The address AND phone number match the domain registration for a fake bank that was recently shut down http://www.aa419.org/fake-banks/fakebanksview.php?key=3402
Sir Kero - 05.18.05 3:15 pm
John claimed that Gamecube is the slowest piece of hardware in the current generation of consoles. Please check your information again. FYI, Gamecube has the best specs in the current gen of consoles! Way faster than PS2 or Xbox…
Still, it’s not all about the speed of the hardware, it’s what you do with it. You can still drive 20 mph with a Ferrari.
aso - 05.18.05 3:23 pm
Yeah, I am really getting tired of all the biast people out there too. It really pisses me off when people say “The gamecube is stupid because it has small discs and its system is really small so it can have as good as graphics as the PS2 and X-box”. So what? look at resident evil 4, has any other sytem matched that game graphc wise? I think not.
luigi7667 - 05.18.05 3:35 pm
Gamecube is about on par with Xbox, but to be honest, i think Xbox is actually a bit more powerful.
drGherbik - 05.18.05 3:42 pm
From what I remember, all this Nintendo hate started with Final Fantasy 7 on PS. It really makes me sad - all the people out there who are standing in line waiting to slap Nintendo.
I TOTALLY agree with Shawn about the reasons behind all this Nintendo animosity. The denziens of Nintendo-haters have become extremely vocal. I have learned to just ignore them. Its like trying to debate a Christian about GOD. They’re right and you’re wrong, and they’re gonna keep telling you how right they are until you convert!
Again, what Nick said is right and true. The only way to beat these people is just to let them get tired of talking.
octorok - 05.18.05 3:54 pm
why there is two disks in the revolution logo !?, yeah the obvious answer the big disk is the revolution media and the small one is the gamcube’s…. I don’t think so !!! I beleive that it means something else….
SILVERSURFER - 05.18.05 4:08 pm
nad guy come’on for a proto it’s actually cool and sexy and blue lights, the tilted vertical position compared to the fridge and the dell optiplex {ps3& xbox2 , yeah 2 because 360 is stupid..) the revolution is high in the sky of the good design… and don’t worry it will be powerful, and nintendo never released a weak home console ….
SILVERSURFER - 05.18.05 4:26 pm
I agree and disagree Nick. TRUE, PR is just spinning numbers for press but technically according the IBM’s white papers. the Cell Processor is capable of doing more floating point calculations per second than the PPC 970 variant that Microsoft is using.
Of course thats not taking into consideration other things like bus speed and graphics cpu. For instance, I believe the Xbox360 has unified memory where as the PS3 has shared memory. Unified memory is much better.
Regarding Revolution, I was pouring over IBM white papers. They key is to find out which processor family the Nintendo “Broadway” chip belongs too. It has to be from one of the existing IBM PPC technologies because Nintendo would never spend more money on developing an entirely new chip like Sony did.
From what I can gather, I STRONGLY believe the “Broadway” chip will be a variant of the CELL PROCESSOR. Why?
For one, it is the ONLY 64bit processor that IBM has capable of pushing theoretical numbers close to what the competition has reported.
Why not a PPC 970 like Xbox360? Because that chip and those cores run way too hot for the revolution enclosure. You can go to IBM’s white papers section and read up on it. The Apple Powermac’s have processors from the same families and they have massive heatsinks, 9 fans, and watercooling.
It can’t be any of IBM’s older chip technologies like the 750 chip (similar to Mac G4’s) because that wouldn’t really put the Revolution on par with it’s competitors. (Although they are technically 2-3 times faster than the G3 based chip in Gamecube).
That only leaves the CELL. The cell’s operating temperatures are much lower. If you get a slower cell (perhaps 2 - 2.5GHz), that might work inside the tiny dimensions of the Revolution.
So there you have it. I think the Revolution will have some variant of IBM’s Cell technology. With ATi’s graphics CPU, thats a total mystery to me. Of course I could be totally wrong BECAUSE when Nintendo says, “our console will on par with others”, they probably mean visually. To casual gamers - might not notice a difference graphically between the consoles. It’s just people like “us” then equate the words “on par” with technical specs.
Go Go Revolution!
long tran - 05.18.05 4:35 pm
i love nintendo and the gamecube but doom 3 on xbox definately looks better then resident evil 4, and xbox is definately more powerful than gamecube, however i think nintendo dererves the credit here for squeezing such great graphics out of what it does have that it can be just as good as most xbox games.
um yea - 05.18.05 4:50 pm
I hate to say it, but the Xbox 360 is the nicest of the three (and strangely enough the PS3 is ugly as anything.) The only problem is have with the Revolution is it looks like what I would have imagined the PS3 to look like. Nintendo needs to lose the gloss finish, give it some bigger buttons, and put those input slots out in the open where we can actually USE them. Style over substance has never been Nintendo’s way, but this design seems to prove they want us to think otherwise. (Changing the colour to a pale (NES) grey would change my opinion a lot as well.)
Steven - 05.18.05 5:30 pm
Nice theory on the CELL! Could be so!
I was thinking about the developer side of the Revolution. The new machine will propably blow new winds to the gaming world! And here’s why:
1. It’s connected to the Internet
2. It’s easy to develop on
3. It has a SD slot which extend the integrated 512MB flash memory storage
== anyone can make games for revolution ==
you can download indie games from the internet and fill your SD card with new fresh games with updates available online at any time. Nintendo has really shown strength in innovation by this move. Like Iwata said, ‘you make the machine’! And it’s just what it does. The machine is already so revolutionary, when adding the hyped new controller to it (propably released at TGS) it will add up to be superbly innovating and will kick the shit out of it’s shoot-em-up-competitors such as xbox 360 and PS3.
Nintendo is really about gaming. And gaming is all about fun. Nintendo == fun!
Now you nintendo fanboys who are losing hope on Nintendo without any reason, try to remember why you play games in the first place. You seem to think more about the engine you are running on than the actual gaming experience.
Nintendo
aso - 05.18.05 5:53 pm
user developing on the machine will propably bring fruit to many different emulator systems *_* maybe I can soon emulate c64 and neogeo on my revolution! the possibilities are limitless. and add internet online gaming on all the classic titles and I’m sold.
aso - 05.18.05 6:36 pm
dude i cannot wait until this comes out so i can play it i gonna play it for a long time because it kinda looks like PS2 and A Gamecube put together.

I, for one, am rooting for Nintendo. Out of the 3 next-gen consoles, the Revolution is the only one that stirred my loins.
Jason - 05.19.05 1:50 am
Same with me! I’m so excited. Today is the 19th! Revolution day! You all will see! MWAHAHAHA! Oh, er… *cough* sorry about that. *sweat*
Kerry - 05.19.05 2:13 am
i’m very excitet by the revolution as well, but i was a bit dissapointed after the press conferense. i mean, nintendogs, electroplancton and zelda.. good stuff but nothing new. not the backwards comp either. sure, it’s all good, but it’s nothing revolutionary. if you’re honest to yourself you’ll realize that emulators has been around for ages. they might’ve been somewhat legally questionable, but they’ve been there for a long time nonetheless.
i still hope the revolution will come, but to be honest the sheer power of the ps3 also will change the way we play. the quality of what i’ve seen in that machine is going to lead to more immersive gameplay, and that’s just the graphics.
so, i really hope nintendo will pull all the stops on revolution and make our jaws drop, bounce on the floor and go out the window. bring on the revolution!
botteu - 05.19.05 9:20 am
Good to see some very sensible comments posted! I totally agree with Nintendo’s strategy of not entering the ‘arms race’ with $ony and M$! To do so would be suicide. Instead they are creating a low-cost system that is aiming to innovate in areas other than just raw horse-power. What they haven’t shown is probably the most important feature of their entire system…the controller. I for one already know I’ll be buying Ninty’s next console (how could I live knowing others are playing the next zelda and mario!) but my only dilemma now is which of the other two consoles will be sitting next to it…

do any of you know what the gc pc was i think it was called the bluegekko or somthing and it used a diferent metal than other pc like the ps2 used aluminem and that used copper wich cunduct energy better wich made it not have to work as hard to get the same results
silver - 05.31.05 10:50 am
ive seen the new controllers or atleast renderings and here are some things about it:
1 small as gamecube controller
2 more buttons gamecube controller
3 there isnt only one style… yep, you can get the same controller in different styles so you can pik the one you like instead of sticking with one that dosent suit you.
4 virtual boy rereleased as a controller for the game and you can plug a ds game into the system and use the ds as a wireless controller. look at gamershavon.proboards41.com for more inside info from an emplyee… me!
