[Now Playing| Zelda:Wind Waker - GC]

Heading into E3 I thought I would post a concept design of a portable Gamecube. Far fetched rumors have been floating around that the Gameboy Evolution will play Gamcube games. Highly unlikely, but if so, this artist rendition will give you an idea of how it may look.

thats a good job. it actually looks like something Nintendo and their long time partner Panasonic would design. In fact, when the unit is closed, it looks like the current Panasonic MP3 cube players.

Well, that successfully proves my thoughts of a portable GameCube wrong. I swore that there was no way the controls be placed on a small handheld and still look good. This art here, and it’s just concept (and not even by Nintendo) defeated what I thought. Now, all we need is an actual unit.

This is a awsome design!!!

gotta love how other sites(joystiq ahem) are taking this as real information and building posts around it. funny!!

Man, aside from the fact that the joysticks won’t fit in it when it’s closed, that is super sexy. also, it’s probably about 10 years from being a reality. nice though. i can’t see nintendo’s next handheld being backwards-compatible with the gamecube, as a) it’d be ridiculously expensive, b) the battery life would be terrible, and c) they’d just be making gamecube games for the thing.
think about it, a new handheld that played gamecube games? that’d mean it’d have to either be a gamecube itself, or be many times more powerful in order to emulate the gamecube. so the games would be probably ten times as advanced. not going to happen. not for a long time. but that does look hot.

Cool idea, but I can’t imaging that being at all comfortable to use.

wait… where is the Z button?
luigi7667 - 05.05.05 3:17 pm
The Z button? We have bigger problems than that.
How will we reach the C-Stick, or close the lid (as mentioned above)?
It’s still pretty cool though

that is one sexy looking device

The buttons could retract downward as the screen is closed. Thats an awesome design and an impressive mock-up.

I like it how it plays Mp3s. I mean, Nintendo must Think that this Looks Really sexy. Hmm… i think they just might take a wack at it. I imagine it this Beauty would have touch screen for the front screen, then gameplay would be almost equal with DS. But a man can dream…..
EOM - 05.05.05 4:04 pm
actually if you look better , the lid has some deepeness in it so you can close it without the analog stick touch the screen ( clever design ) and the z button should on top of the R button, so no problem at all…..
SILVERSURFER - 05.05.05 4:06 pm
I think the ergonomics of that unit simply would not work….
newave - 05.05.05 4:13 pm
I think the main problem is that it would be prohibitively expensive to manufacture a portable Gamecube, and so we won’t see one for a while yet. It’s a shame, because it would definitely rejuvinate the Gamecube market if a handheld based on the same technology were to arrive.
