Hello Player 1
[Now Playing| Minish Cap - DS]

To go along with the Revolution system mockup I posted yesterday, here is the controller. Its actually very well thought out and incoporates most of the ideas that have been floating around. Gyros, squeezable grips, wireless, and touch sensitivity. The bad part about making a mockup this cool is that if Nintendo doesnt live up to it we will all be disappointed. Anyone remember the early Virtual Boy mockups?

wow, the Virtual Boy mockup looks better than the VB. The rev controller definitely looks cool, but it also looks kinda simple. All the ideas incorporated into it though are really cool.
CoffeeMan on April 15, 2005 at 10:04 am
but nintendo is always the one to keep it clean and simple
matt on April 15, 2005 at 10:23 am
How bout some buttons with that controller.
Goob on April 15, 2005 at 10:27 am
There are 6 buttons. Two “squeeze”, two shoulder, two face.
Interesting. I like the layout on the face buttons, hard not to hit the right thing.
My problem is, if you’re trying to be really accurate with the pad, and you squeeze the L button, your thumb is going to move a bit. In Goldeneye on N64 I’d hit Z with my right middle finger just to keep my gun steady while in aimed mode. I’ve got a thing for accuracy…
Kamalot on April 15, 2005 at 10:28 am
The ONLY thing I can think of is that the red / green buttons should be rotated 90 degrees to the right.
Your thumb moves better in a left-right fashion instead of an away-towards motion.
Think of the GameCube controller and the location of the A/B button and how your thumb can easily flip between them.
I’m glad Nintendo focuses so much on the interface of their designs FIRST instead of an afterthought.

I was talking about this in the Sin & Punishment comment section, just wanted to build on it.
I wasn’t a fan of the microphone at first, but now I’m seeing it as something very special. It’s a “hand’s free” button and if developers used it as such, they could come up with some really great ideas. I’m sure most third parties will ignore it and port over their junk from ps3 and xbox 360 without any positive changes though.
drGherbik on April 15, 2005 at 11:25 am
I like the addition of a mic, but I doubt it’d have so few face buttons, with or without touch sensitive surfaces.
And again, I think its fairly unattractive.
krypt on April 15, 2005 at 11:28 am
I really like the design of the controller for the most part. I am hoping they use standard digital buttons though. Also, I hope they can come up with a solution to combine the D-pad and analog stick, having both is very tacky and can confuse newcomers (though most would automatically want to try the stick).
Back to the microphone…
Think of the microphone as a digital button instead of an analog voice recognition. Developers would have to be careful about using it though. Nothing to action oriented should be attached to it (imagine playing a game of Halo where blowing into the mic. meant someone was throwing a grenade). Everyone in the room would get a heads up. It’s probably best for selection, especially for games utilizing the touch screen as the main input source. That would allow 1 hand to hold the DS, 1 hand to use the stylus with no interruptions.
There are some cool ideas for voice recognition though. Imagine targeting a specific opponent from a group by yelling a number into the mic or clearing all the enemies from the screen in kirby with it (with the mic power up).
Bah, I’m going off topic again, maybe I should sit down and write an article…

Is wireless official? Everyone is fairly certain XBOX360 is going that route. And since the Wavebird is the greatest thing since raisin bread it isnt a major stretch for it to appear in the next generation. However since there wasn’t a rumble pack for the wavebird because of battery issues, wouldn’t the same hold true for the rumored gyroscope feature?
Blake on April 15, 2005 at 11:44 am
While i understand that the new controller will be revolutionary, you need to remember that the Revolution will be backwards compatable with gamecube games. How would you play Metroid Prime with that thing?
Bull True on April 15, 2005 at 12:05 pm
^ Remember, in the mockup of the system there were ports for actual gamecube controllers.
hokku on April 15, 2005 at 12:12 pm
I know I already commented, but man that mockup looks awesome. geez, so it’s only a month till all the next gen craziness hits. The anticipation is killing me. Well, it’s making me have to go to the bathroom at least.

Nick, it’s awesome that you included the VB mock-up. That appeared in the very first issure of Next Generation magazine… I was in like 8th or 9th grade. I brought it to school the next day and showed all of my friends. We were all convinced it would be the coolest thing ever. It might’ve been, had it really ended up looking like that. That was one of the greatest video game mags ever btw, especially the early issues. About the controller mock-up, I think it’s ugly, but well thought out. Personally, however, I’ve become convinced that the entire face of the controller is gonna be a sort of touchscreen. Come on, it’s ‘the rumor that won’t die’. I’m hoping for dual analog sticks and totally programmable buttons. We’ll see…
CeiverX on April 15, 2005 at 2:56 pm
Analog stick should have a swiviling thumb-head. Add a marble-sized optical trackball on the right side for mouse-sensitivity control. Viva la revolution!
That guy on April 15, 2005 at 3:29 pm
You might want to put some more beef on that…I mean buttons. The layout seems a little to simple. Imagine playing a next-generation Zelda, for example, telling Link to fire an arrow seems kinda weird. The gyroscope idea seems pretty neat though.PLUS how much would these controllers cost if there’s all that stuff on it??
Baldridge on April 15, 2005 at 3:32 pm
2 things. First, I think Nintendo doesn’t have anything specific to live up to in the first place, when “ideas floating around” aren’t always concrete or official. Second, I have an inkling that revolution will introduce a new control device, alongside GC control pads (if a little upgraded). I dont know why but I can’t seem to shake off this feeling that we could somehow plug GC controls right into revolution, while there’ll be another socket for the new peripheral…

no d pad? shame on the big N. not to sure i like the squeeze grips either, im kinda diggin the a nd b buttons though
NINTENDOMAN on April 15, 2005 at 5:58 pm
DO NOT WORRY THE CONTROLLER WILL NOT LOOK THAT AT ALL !!!!!!! TRUST ME
luigi7667 on April 15, 2005 at 6:23 pm
SHUT UP NINTENDOMAN.getting back to the piont, the gyro sensor sounds kind of stupid.what if you accidently tilt your controller and end up killing yourself? Mabye if the gyro sensor had an on/off button…
James Montagna on April 15, 2005 at 10:07 pm
Maybe that would be the POINT for a game like Kirby’s Tilt & Tumble or a Wario Ware Twisted for Revolution.
At first I hated this controller, but the more I look at it… The more I think it’s awesome, and the more I want Nintendo to use this exact mock-up for their actual controller. The light up buttons are just too sexy and convenient, imagine looking down in the dark to see your controller buttons illuminating beneath your thumbs.
silversurfer on April 16, 2005 at 12:32 am
my only critique is the half moon bittons ~~~ they are awful and their position is very bad, the buttons shoul be in the turning arc of the thumb like in the wavebird
NINTENDOMAN on April 16, 2005 at 12:35 am
ONLY ONE WORD luigi7667 GO FIND A GIRLFRIEND INSTEAD OF WAISTING YOUR TIME ON COMMENTING ABOUT GAMES. PETITE MINABLE
luigi7667 on April 16, 2005 at 7:29 am
okay NINTENDOMAN,I have a question for you.Why did you come back to 4cr? the time your dumbass wasent here was the greatest time to go to this website. In case you havent noticed(and I’ll bet you havent noticed)everyone hates you.So if you dont mide, pissoff.

This controller was made by a member of the GameSpot forums, he went thru a lot of different versions before he came up with this.
Here is the thread for the controller design: http://forums.gamespot.com/gamespot/show_messages.php?board=909104101&topic=20159187&page=0
He also made the console mockup: http://forums.gamespot.com/gamespot/show_messages.php?board=909104101&topic=20335529&page=0

Why is everyone so hyped for the revolution?? Let’s start talking about the Ps3’s cell processor!! hahahahh.
You guys are making assumptions and mockups on rumors. If you get dissapointed i’ll be all your fault. remember the nintendo microphone? everyone thought of a dance pad and some lasers to control your games using on your eyes, etc. Let’s wait a month to know for sure. I’m pretty sure by the beginning of may averyone will assume Wireless-gyro-vibration-lcdtouchscreen-
pressuresensitibity-micrphone-stylus-pda-
sdcardslot-divx-aac/mp3 controllers are coming from nintendo, and if the real one doesn’t have mp3 playing feature is gonna be dissapointing and mark “the last nail in Nintendo’s coffin”. Nintendo is very alike with Apple and it’s gossip and rumours.
Joseph Valencia on April 16, 2005 at 1:02 pm
Looks kind of cool. The only gripe I have is the lack of the traditional four face-buttons as well as D-Pad/A-Stick. Not bad for a fan-conceived mockup.

im sorry it makes no sence gyro needs to be 2 handed controller your right with the x/y buttons but totally wrong on design imagine x/y ether side and slightly above a anolog presure button think were the A button is on cubes pad repeat so each hand has anolog x/y buttons shoulder and z trigger in each pod/pad wot ever we call them theres a gyro sencer you have dual gyro plus dual anolog this controller consept seems to be stolen from i own posts on this site and the emails iv sent to users of gamespot forums take his pic shrink it down to a gyro mouse size repeat for other hand PESTO dual handed controller with true gyro movments simply putting gyro in a 2 handed single pad design results in silly waving around like those peeps who cart play video games you do it in a dual gyro design you get a pad crossed with tom criuse minority report gloves effect iv posted this on this and other sites many times and the above picture seems to ber trying to ripp off what iv allready stated many times but clearly gets it wrong gyro = 2 handed not single pad it makes no sence
truth teller on April 18, 2005 at 1:32 pm
sorry about my ranting to make my last post easier to follow take above pic shrink down to a half cube pad shape with x/y etherside of anolog gyro inbuilt repeat for other hand its that simple
