In the world of Mr. Driller everything is cute and pastel…and there is always a giant corckscrew drill falling on your head!
There has been a version of Mr. Driller for just about every game console out there. However, American gamers have missed out on the best ones. The Gamecube version, Mr Driller Drill Land, is widely considered to be the very best game in the series. Of course, its only available in Japan. Mr. Driller: Drill Spirits for the DS is available here, but guess what? We got shafted on some of the best content.
[Gamecube - Mr Driller Drill Land]

Drill Land (GC) is said to contain the largest variety of modes and look the prettiest of any game in the series. There isnt a ton of Japanese text, so you should be just fine if all you can do is barely speak english (which is how most Americans seem to exist).
Unfortunately I’ve read on a number of forums that it will not save if you use the Freeloader. So…I guess you just have to enjoy it without keeping score. You can pick up the game and the Freeloader (needed to play Japanese games) for around $55.
[NintendoDS - Mr Driller Drill Spirits]

Drill Spirits (DS) is the version to get if you want Mr. Driller on the go. The game looks nice, takes advantage of both of screens and can even be controlled via the touch screen (although I hear its easier to just use the d-pad).
The first feature we missed out on was the single-cart multiplayer. The Japanese version allows users to connect to each other and battle with just one cart. Its baffling as to why the US version doesnt have this.
Secondly, the Japanese game features a single-player mode called Dristone. From a forum member, here is what we missed out on; “Dristone mode takes the basic Driller gameplay and enhances it with power-ups that you collect as you dig. These are added to your inventory and can be used at any time to change block colors, destroy blocks, etc. There’s actually a fair amount of strategy to this mode, and it’s a shame to see it removed from the U.S. release. Apparently, the translation of the text in this mode would have delayed the game.”
The Japanese version will run you about $50 to import, but if you want the best version, this is it.
UPDATE: I have learned that the Euro version of Drill Spirits has all the features the Japanese version had, and its in English! Im still searching for a good site to get it from though…
So there you have it. Another edition of ‘Import Worthy,’ pointing out awesome games that we wont ever see. Let me know if you have these or end up importing them. Im think Im getting Drill Land pretty soon.
Both Link-Sang and Play-Asia have the games and are reliable sources to order from.

Nick–got a question. You mention the ‘Freeloader’ being needed to play Japanese games. I thought the DS was region free. So if I wanna play any games from Japan, or buy any here in Korea(DS and games are here, they’re imported from Japan), I need this thing? I’m a bit confused..
namor7 - 03.04.05 12:15 am
the freeloader is for playing japanese gamecube games. his import worthy bit covers two mr. driller games; one for the gamecube and one for the ds. the ds is region free and will play the import w/o problems and it will save.
i bought drill spirits here in the us even though i knew about the crap i was missing out on. why? well, i suck at every mr. driller game i’ve ever played so i knew i wouldn’t play this one all that much. also, there’s no one around here who owns a ds, so single pack multiplayer does just as much good as no multiplayer. do i think we got the shiggity-shaft? i certainly do.
as for the freeloader…i think it just won’t save because japanese and us memory cards are different. i can’t make promises, but a card that doesn’t have us game saves or maybe a card imported from japan might work. i also want to know for sure because i want to import donkey konga 2 and 3.

Thanks a ton, Daniel. You’ve lessened my ignorance.

Nick, I borrowed this game from Andy Thai and I’ve been addicted ever since…even so far as to having dreams about it 2 nights in a row…very very strange dreams!!!! I’ll even be reading text on the internet after playing it and I expect the text to fall down and dissapear. This is most likely because of the combined effects of drilling and alcohol.
This is a very fun game, and very very challenging. It seems to have a lot of replay value also. The little cut scenes are cute, I love the dog’s conversations. Meh anyway, im drunk again..but this is a fun game.

You should also do this for Zelda: 4 Swords because we are missing a very cool mode…
Also, instead of buying a freeloader - you can get your cube modded very easily (if you can sodder) or you can just send it out for $40 to be modded with a switch - that way you can save with no problems. http://www.oldschoolgamer.ca (I think) has this service. The only one left as far as I can tell…

Good call. Im a bit weary of having someone poke around my Cube though. Hmm, I wonder if this would solve the saving issue.
Ah yeah, the Navi Hunt mode or whatever. Ill do some research.

i personally wouldn’t want to risk my game cube because it’s one of the older systems that still has the digital-out port…which i use. i am decent at soldering, but i just wouldn’t want to chance it…and i don’t really want to ship it somewhere.
daniel schroeder - 03.04.05 12:57 pm
Well - the service has a 90 day warranty on it and even if he breaks it - he has a repair service so I’m sure he’ll be able to fix any mistakes, not to mention, i’m sure he’ll just replace it.
It would most definitely solve the saving issue - it turns your cube into a Japanese cube so Mr. Driller would save no matter what. And with the switch you can just turn it back to US when you play your US games. The reason why Driller doesn’t save with the freeloader is because the freeloader messes with the coding of the system and games - it doesn’t actually change the region of your system.
Speaking of - another great import worthy game - Doshin the Giant PAL version. It took me a bit but I found a PAL version of this game so everything is in English and the Freeloader will work with this game. It’s great too! reminds me of populous and a bit like the Actraiser sim parts.
Nathan Smart - 03.06.05 1:46 am
Really, they made a PAL version? Awesome! Im gonna have to track that down. I didnt know if ever got translated.
And I wonder, if you buy a Japanese memory card…?
