I try not to be a giant fanboy with this site. Sure, I love Nintendo, but I respect gaming as an art form and a form of entertainment. Anyone who can provide that is alright in my book. I love the medium and I love the gaming community. I also hope to see gaming expand to even greater horizons in the future. More innovation, more women gamers, and more fun.
I recently read this article about the maturity of gaming journalism and I wanted to share it. Its a great read and people should really take it to heart.

Gaming’s increasing popularity is a curse in disguise. Just my opinion, but I hate to see gaming getting so mainstream and watered down. It’s just a venue for faceless corporations (EA) to make money off the unwashed masses (frat boys). It’s been this way for a while now, but it just gets worse and worse.
Why does every game have to be 3D? Why does every game have to be mature, with people blowing shit up or assassinating bad guys, or even (dare I question it) have lots of ass n titties.
Gaming is being watered down by people who will buy anything that looks prity, or has the most commercials and hype. I’m not even talking about the people who read IGN…more power to them, as they are probably true gamers. I’m talking about people who think Halo is the greatest game ever, just becaues they have never experienced how a first person shooter should really play (KB/Mouse).
Meh.

While you make a good point, I have to disagree. When a medium gets a large presense in society it has to grow and evolve. Take a look at music and movies. Both can fit your argument above. However, there are still great movies and albums that come out among all the crap.
Imagine if only men were allowed to record music. Or only men were allowed to act in and direct movies. Variety can be a good thing. With more people willing and able to make games we will get more games. Not all of them will be better, but some surely will.
As of right now, gaming is still too hardcore. Still too fanboy-ish. Too incestuous. Once more people are able to contribute to gaming, the more we will see innovate ideas.
Sure, I dont want to see more crap. But its just a fact we will have to deal with. The bright side is that there will continue to be people who make great games to entertain us.

Thanks for the recommendation–good article. The writer’s comments on Half-life 2 are right on target. It’s a fact that the gaming industry/press is way too ‘exclusive’ to guys who stay in their rooms and play games all night in the dark. It needs to widen out. The recent article on game commplexity at N-sider.com was really pertinent, too. Oh yeah, are the two Luckett’s brothers or something? Just curious.

Yeah, they’re bros. I’m thinking of calling ‘em the “Super Luckett Brothers.”
