Nintendo 3DS Mockups

Hey there,

This is our collection of mockups for the Nintendo 3DS. We’re hoping to have the best archive out there for mockups like we had for the Revolution and original DS. We’ll do our best to cite the correct sources for these materials, but this is the internet so if you find that we’re missing some info drop us a line and help us give credit to the right people.

Now, once you’ve checked out this archive if you come across something that we don’t have here yet be sure to send it to us at mailbag@4colorrebellion.com.

Enjoy!

Congratulations to Ryan Cooper and his mockup listed at #2. The 4cr staff has a special spot in their hearts for the DS Phat and you appealed directly to it, securing our fancy prize in the process. Thanks to everyone who submitted mockups and please continue to do so. We love this stuff!

Exciting stuff. I hope it doesn’t end up looking just like the DS, although I could definitely see that happening. It is called 3DS after all. I’m kinda digging #11.

Not many have given much thought as to input. When not using traditional button controls, how exactly do you use a stylus on a flat screen when things come out of it? My personal theory is that Nintendo will retask the Wiimote’s infra-red sensor and place it on the 3DS, stick an IR LED on the 3DS, and a diffuse IR reflector on the stylus tip. Result? : instant 3D position tracking ala PS Move, only a lot smaller, simpler and cheaper and totally passive on the stylus end.

Elmer: well my thinking is that only one screen will be in 3D and that it will probably be the top one instead of the touchscreen since the complications that would arise from trying to make the user input commands on a simulated 3D interface would make for a more expensive product and possibly frustrating experience.

The one from Shiggy’s HILARIOUS XD

All of those are made from paint or half rubbed off ds’s!

Elmer: Genius!
Initially I wondered if they would continue with 2 screens, but then it dawned on me the codename 3ds means they probably will

laserbl’ast on March 29, 2010 at 10:34 am

in fact, the backward compatability actually means they definitely will.

sorry for the glut of comments here, but also design’s like no.20 are less likely i think- i know there are phones with swivelling mechanisms and so on, but nintendo tends to make things as idiot-proof and simple as possible, since even with simpler stuff things go wrong (remotes vs tvs, broken hinges on earlier ds units etc)

That mockup posted by replicashooter is not “unknown” – it has been around for quite a while (at least 2 years)…

I dont think the new one will be a dual screen at all I think it will be a wide screen that can work as a dual screen for backwards compatibility, but it will simply be one wide touchscreen for 3DS games. If the games are going to have better graphics then it will need a higher resolution then two small screens. Besides 3DS does not have to mean 3D DualScreen it could simply mean 3D- Screen. I look forward to it either way.

Quicksilver: thanks a lot for the heads up! The image and linkage have been duly updated with the proper info.

I really like 26, looks really sleek, I’d toootally buy that. And I love the logo on 27, I nostalgia’d pretty hard, thinking of the gamecube start up animation.

That #4 from Ryan Cooper is pretty damn sexy. I like.

Haha. #28 rules.

A.J. Petix on April 5, 2010 at 9:07 pm

I’m really liking 27. It seems pretty consistent with something Nintendo would do.

A.J. Petix on April 5, 2010 at 9:07 pm

And by 27 I mean 17. 17 is consistent.

Made this one a week or so ago (it’s similar to an older one, but better imho): http://nick.onetwenty.org/index.php/2010/03/27/nintendo-3ds-concept-design/

Thanks for the submission Nick, you’ve been added to the top section of this page.

laserbl’ast on April 6, 2010 at 7:32 pm

if i imagine having a dpad at the top and stick at the bottom of my current ds or vice versa, as many of these designs do, the weight distribution/balance would seem wrong. there are probably ways around that, although it may also be awkward to have buttons very close to the hinge. something like nick’s design could be pretty sweet.

Laserbl'ast! on April 28, 2010 at 9:05 am

surely to make it cube-capable the screens will need to be bigger than current ds. that must mean the end for true pocket gaming. that said, only the gbmicro and arguably sp ever fit in yer pocket anyway

wow, loving that one submitted by Nick Lowe. I’d buy that in a heartbeat.

Woah, missed the full gallery earlier, some of these are absolutely stunning. And I did find the iPad on the GameBoy base amusing…
